making that out of discrete logic is impressive

This one is really interesting. Neil Hinson (Chief Engineer) designed the first one because we were about to go to NAB and I was about to interface an Encore DVE to the first digital tape recorder for CCIR601 live on the Sony stand. We wanted to be sure it would work (parallel) with all the timing etc. correct so Neil designed this. The most useful bit is that the blanking/timing data was shifted both horizontally and each showed the difference between correct and not on a monitor, so problems were obvious. Later we used it for ram checks etc in the whole range. Brilliant. The display shows a complex CRC so that both position and data errors show as unexpected numbers.

thanks David, it's a very unique device and very privileged to be gifted one. I spoke with Alec and he wants to make contact. I have generated a temporary email for you to contact me on: elegant.wing8369@fastmail.com

You are lucky to have the CCIR 601 version this was generally only used in the R&D department. In the turnpike test department we only got the CCIR 656 parallel analyser.

Very cool piece of kit. I remember drooling over what Quantel boxes could do back in the day. It especially warms my heart that this was done entirely with discreet logic! No wonder the thing has a Logic analyser ribbon cable and connector :-)

Yes Quantel certainly knew how to shift bits around in hardware, it was the corner stone of the USP

So cool that they manufactured their own internal test-QC gear as nothing on the market met their needs. Also, you're brilliant, Mark.

RS used to sell those cases - maybe made by vero?

I want to say that the manufacturer might be US based, as a US based medical company still uses those cases for their equipment and seem pretty keen on using all US sourced parts.

I will have to take a careful look at the inside there maybe something stamped or printed that has some clue as to it's origins.

Many thanks to Yunohū Uwhárre (fascinating name, is that Inuit?) for providing this hardware for our knowledge and entertainment.

The Ancilllary headers would have been used for embedded timecodes and possibly closed caption data

I was thinking the same thing. I think you can now embed VDCP machine control into the AUX bits too.

Yes, i think it depends on the type, some embedded data is in the active video and some is outside.
