In this video i get the Quantel DPB-7001 Digital Paintbox almost 100% working and demonstrate the previously non-working functions with the use of a commercial SMD Hard Disk Emulator.

It is working very nicely now with the hard drive emulator. It is hard to believe this is 1981 tech, it is so advanced. Well done Quantel, and well done Mark for getting it going again to this advanced stage.

Remember playing with one a couple of times when I joined the BBC in 1990 as a Studio Engineer and then encountering the one in the Television Centre weather office where it replaced the magnetic weather symbols with a Apple Mac controlling a DPB like a very expensive external graphics card. From what I understand the DPB CPU card was a customised one to allow external control from the Mac.

Yes that's how i understand it. There's very little information known about how the DPB was customised for the weather. I believe it was the same CPU card but with a different version of the software.

Fantastic stuff as always - finally got around to watching this (and I’m slowly catching up with the discord activity too!). You really lucked out with the SMD emulator - it might’ve been pricey but I’m sure they’re as rare as hens teeth. Can’t wait to see what you’ve got planned next!

It sure is! Just a shame the colour is a bit off but we'll get that sorted eventually! I am really looking forward to seeing what is on your disk!

Just to expand on this a bit. I have an RGB -> YUV converter now instead of capturing the Composite Video, it's massively clearer but the colour accuracy is slightly off. I had to do a lot of colour correction on it to get it close which resulted in it being a bit dark. Sorry about that, hopefully it will be closer to what it should be next time.

@@DextersTechLab Yeah in my experience Pal has a bit of a problem with bright reds - tends to make them more brownish.

No PAL used here, it's the cheap RGB/YUV converter i am using.

In 1982 it was hugely impressive, shame only a privileged few got to experience one! But that's why i want to get this DPB out to events.

That's really cool. Considering it's the same age as myself, that's some very impressive image processing. Good to see you back Dex. BTW, MO Disks always make me think of the og Resident Evil :)

I guess the lights on the front issue might just be blown bulbs, there is probably the little leaded bulbs in them. I know I had a late 80's organ that had buttons that had incadescent bulbs behind them.
