In this video i get the Quantel DPB-7001 Digital Paintbox i detail the progress of the video input. RGB video is now working and i have a plan to relocate the machine and free up space in the lab to aid repairs.

I love how Quantel went all out and didn't stop until they engineered a system that realized their vision. The cost was high but the effort produced excellent results.

Yes and is one of the reasons why i would love to see more of their older machines from the 1980s. Maybe one day!

Fascinating video. I spent a lot of lunchtimes at school using the paintbox. The input felt very effective - for the time and it really felt natural to use. Not sure what model it was, but it had the large tablet, rather than the small express one. This was circa 95. How the school managed to get one is, I assume, because the school wasn't far from the company's office in Newbury.

Quantel did give machines out to schools and colleges. Did you have video production along with it or was it purely an 'art' tool?

with to paintboxes you can animate two cutouts over livevideo - or you should plug the video output from dpb back in to the video input from paintbox express - and you should get a nice video delay when you move a cutout over live video. actually you don’t need that paintbox express for that. you can input the video directly from dpb output. ;)

Having worked with digital broadcast devices in the early 90’s you quickly forget how much electronics was required for the analogue video IO. I remember when Rec 601 digital IO devices started to appear and overnight the IO stage was replaced by a single Sony SBX1601 which in return was more unreliable than boards covered in analogue IO and being taught to smash top with a hammer and screwdriver and removing the chip one pin at a time.

Oh i know all about those dredded SBX1601s. But yes digital was massive in broadcasting.

@@DextersTechLab I think the problem was mainly the chip internal substrate was not attached to the outer casing so heat dissipation was pretty rubbish. Some manufacturers added heatsinks but were totally inefficient. Later Gennum equivalents were more reliable from memory

is the chip you are looking for something like the AD723ARUZ IUV decoder chip if so DIGIKEY Electronics have them.

I would prefer to repair the original board than make something new. I think this needs to be kept original as possible.

So glad you got the RGB input up and working! What do you think is wrong with the composite input? Is it just black, or does it just look like bad video?

Literally nothing comes out, fingers crossed it's one component early in the input!

@@DextersTechLab Good luck with the traces. I've been watching CuriousMarc over the years working on 1.)Alto 2.)Apollo Guidance Computer 3.)HP9825 that had an over-voltage, and if there's one thing I learned, given time you can find the broken component.

@reeder 76 CuriousMarc just added crowbar's to his "fleet" of HP 9825 computers, everything is safe, at least from over-voltage now with crowbars everywhere. 😸

At 12:17 you say that the Chroma Gain, Gain, and Black Level knobs on the front of the machine don't affect the video. Even when those knobs are working, do they affect both the Composite and RGB inputs, or maybe only the Composite input? Do they affect the ADC card, or the Decoder card?
@DextersTechLab
@DextersTechLab 2 жыл бұрын
It looks like we have an answer to the issue with the front panel controls. They only operate with a special plug on the back of the machine which is missing. So we need to make one. They would affect the chroma and black level on the video input. Not sure about the Mono, it might affect only the video input too.

Nice getting to this stage, well done! - I assume you would need a 15Khz RGB video signal? An Amiga would be great for that. iirc Amiga have both H/v sync and c-sync out of the box. Perhaps this was mentioned in the video, but I missed it you mentioned digital video, does the DPB support SDI or some other cool video interface I'm not aware of? I work in IT, but in a broadcast environment but used Scala a lot on my Amiga 4k..
@DextersTechLab
@DextersTechLab 2 жыл бұрын
Yes it's just a regular 625 or 525 line video signal. So yes you could connect a 16 bit micro like an Amiga or Atari into it using RGB. The DPB has no SDI, it's design predates even the older parallel rec.656 digital video. So it's only analog input and output.
