To the point the Japanese government will send out it's military to make sure no *PIRATES* are boarding legal fishing vessels. This entire show is just shocked pikachu face whenever the Sea Shepherd is targeted.
@cgi20023 жыл бұрын
It's entirely legal for military personel to operate on unmarked ships provided they are not operating in the territorial waters of another nation without that nations consent. Not all military vessels are clearly marked as military vessels, some are marked and run by civilian organisations (often research vessels, ice breakers, supply ships).
@cgi20023 жыл бұрын
@riptide 23 you do realise international waters are fair game provided your vessels registered nation has not signed a treaty banning the activity you are performing. Japan has signed no treaties banning whaling, thus the activity is entirely legal. They have however signed the relevant treaties banning piracy (as has every sea going nation on Earth, it's a requirement to be protected from piracy), and thus are legally entitled to protection against groups like this. Just because you don't like what they re doing (I don't either) doesn't mean you get to decide they can't do it. I don't like that there are people who do DiY/make noise before 2pm (I work nights), I am not allowed to break into their homes and try to stop them.
@cgi20023 жыл бұрын
@riptide 23 UN laws require ratification of a treaty by the nations accepting it, they hold no legal power beyond that as the UN is not a nation, holds no territory and has no jurisdiction as an entity itself, it is from a pure legal standpoint, only a forum for the free and peaceful communication of its member states. Membership does not require the ratification of all UN directives as laws. Prime example is the the UN has banned the use of landmines, cluster muntions, chemical weapons, nuclear weapons, etc and has "laws" regarding these. The US refused to sign the treaties, and continues to deploy & develop landmines, cluster munitions, chemical weapons, nuclear weapons, etc. All of which are major crimes in basically every other nation on earth, many of which carry the death penalty (in countries that have it), or charges for war crimes at the Hague, but since the US never signed those treaties, their personel are immune from prosecution, even when using those weapons outside of US territory (and inside other countries sovereign territory).
@cgi20023 жыл бұрын
@riptide 23 using the "cause is just" arguement works great. So you going to go to China and force their leaders to stop the cultural genocide its performing, or go to Isreal and demand they leave the west bank alone, or ant of the thousands of other injustices occurring worldwide, honestly whaling is a minor thing compared to some of them, and frankly a pointless one when you consider the actual longer term environmental impacts from pollution in the oceans, need to fix that too. The world doesn't work on what we think is right, it works on what we can actually do, and get others agree to do. If someone doesn't agree with you, you don't have the right to force them to agree with you, even if you are morally right, that makes you an asshole. You need to use the existing legal framework, that's how society works, it's not perfect, far from, but it's what we have, else we go back to the world of international politics were "might makes right".
@cgi20023 жыл бұрын
@riptide 23 sadly were not half as civilised as we claim, not even close to half. Our inhumanity to other humans is bad enough, nevermind our rampant abuse of the planet itself. My point regarding saving the whales been pointless is, why save 1, 10 or even 100 species for the next 50 years if were going to take no action to prevent their and a million other species extinction in 50, 100 or even 200 years. Short term solutions are fine, but longer term ones are vital. Also in this specific example, their actions aren't a case of "the ends justify the means" as the ends are "nothing changes, things may actually get worse", their actions don't have a positive effect, they don't prevent whaling, all they do is cause more fuel to be used, more time to be spent, increasing costs so another whale is now killed to cover those costs, they in truth make the problem worse. Thats not even counting their own fuel been burnt, and the pollution their own boat is causing. Want a solution that works, make whale hunting culturally unacceptable in Japan, to the Japanese. Expose the firms buying the meat, the resturants serving it, the people eating it, make them feel guilty for their actions, but do it peacefully, do it were people can see you and don't make yourself dislikeable (so no civil disobedience against any reasonable request, no annoying the general public, etc), so that it becomes culturally unacceptable which leads to a majority of people to accept your cause, which leads to political change. You don't beat an industry by disrupting the supply, there will always be someone else willing/able to supply, you remove the demand. The whole protesting methodology is part of why people often ignore groups of climate activists, they are annoying and actively disrupt peoples lives. They don't educate or inform dispite trying, they annoy. You want to educate and inform people, you can't annoy them first, annoyed people don't care what your point is anymore, all they want to do is punch you in the face (or see someone else do it), you lost the ability to have a reasonable discussion. Sorry if this got a little ranty and long, it just bugs me when you see people with all the best intentions, acting like complete morons, making the problem worse. Especially since those morons ruin it for the people actually been effective as they get deemed guilty by association (of cause).

I'd love to see these guys taken by Somali pirates or battle it out with them
@cgi20023 жыл бұрын
They'd be screwed if they tried their tactics against any comerical shipping vessel that passes the coast of Somalia too, they often run with armed security onboard, who are legally authorised to use lethal force against pirates. Anyone attempting to force a boarding of a ship is under international law, committing an act of priacy unless legally authorised to do so by the state who's waters they are in, or an international treaty enforcing a recognised blockade.
@cgi20023 жыл бұрын
@@thefieldphoneguy8254 first off, the pirates I spoke of were the "whale warriors", they have been classified by several nations as pirates, having commited multiple acts ot piracy over the years. Also you do realise the Somali pirates tend to not actually use much violence if they can avoid it, they want everyone alive and well for ransom, they just make a big show of having the potential for violence. This isn't to say they are particularly nice either, but they probably won't kill you or even hurt you beyond mild neglect. Whereas the commercial shipping in the area that have armed defenses, they tend to resort to actual violence quite quickly to prevent the boarding occurring. To the point thet some actively try to sink the pirate boats with machine gun fire. The moment warning shots are fired or demands made, they are allowed to legally respond with lethal force, and they often do. Admittedly they also often make themselves visable before this point, which wards off the pirates who don't want to risk a fight. Hence the armed commercial shipping actually is more dangerous than the pirates to a group of idiots like these. The pirates will take their boat, realise no one is willing to ransom the crew (as they have warrants for their arrest in their home countries), probably dump them on shore (that's were they'll be in actual danger, lots of groups there want to kill westerners in very brutal ways) and keep all their stuff. The commercial shipping will, when they use their usual tactics, fire on their bridge with at best a water cannon, at worst a LMG. Either way, someone/thing is going to get hurt, and 10 minutes later a Destroyer from the international task force is going to pull up along side and arrest them all, send them to shore in Somalia (provided this takes place in Somali waters) and they get to go to a Somali prison (were you learn to wish you were dead).

There's no professional vessels that you bring your girlfriends on, this is a Joke at the expense of an innocent and naive family. The boats cost millions, the fuel, food, repairs, chase boats, and helicopters are Beyond Pathetic! Total Scam!
