Trident NP is here!
Initial thoughts:
- love the new color
- accuracy and precision is great
- make sure to wear gloves before touching reagents
- reagent process is a little trickier than regular Trident
- will never run a tank without it
- best product of 2024 by far

I was definitely excited for this unit. Definitely didn't care that it was the same design, same as large, etc etc BUT what really pushed me away was the cost of the reagents. If it would have stayed the same price as the alk, cal and mag then maybe I would have overseen that and gone for it. But 60 per 2 months? No can do. I instead when with 2 Reef Factory Smart Testers at the on sale price if 300 dollars each. They are both small and both together are about the size of one trident. Reagents are 26 each so 52 for both but where it differs is the ability to extend the 1 test per day for 6+ months. So essentially it lasts for 3 times more than the NP. I really really tried to love this one. But if money isn't an issue or you get them for virtually free or discount or whatever it is. And you are OK with it. Then it Definitely is a great piece of kit. Yes, you can test manually for cheaper. If you are one that does it and isn't lazy about it then more power to you. I prefer to just pull up and app and see the levels and do what I need to do from there. During spring and summer I barely spend any time at home due to 3 kids, a wife, a father in law and 4 dogs. Soccer, baseball, softball, gymnastics, coaching and full time job. Automation is my best friend lol. Cheers my friend.

Very thoughtful comment that I appreciate. I thought a lot about this subject and have mentioned it in my video. (And I do pay for reagents for both of my Tridents). I think this hobby is costly and there's a monthly sum that one will be paying no matter what - it can be buying corals, maybe premium corals, buying fish, buying supplements, buying salt, equipment, test kits, etc. And it is a very individual preference (which I think you are saying as well) on how much money to spend and also how to allocate it. Some folks put a premium on high end corals, I have never bought a $300 torch coral or a $500 scoly but many do and that's what is important to them. I have no idea how much does it cost Neptune to produce these reagents but I'm sure they've arrived to that price to reflect the cost, R&D, marketing and profit, so whatever it is, it is. Now the only question is about the value to the user. I was sceptical at first with the original Trident, knowing that one would have to pay a monthly fee stings, but once I tried it for a few months - I don't think I'm ever going back. The value I get from it - stability, checks against user errors, etc is definitely worth it to me. Now that I'm actively feeding corals and running a coral farm where I want to always be in that sweet spot - it is definitely worth to me to know my nitrate and phosphate daily. And I will certainly be getting a second unit for my other aquarium as I think it will save me money in the long run with coral losses. (Fingers crossed). Anyways, that's just a few more thoughts on the subject.

@@TreasureCorals yes. To each is own and I feel people should respect those decisions vs bashing just because they won't for one reason or another. In all honesty, this type of automation has made me successful. And I'm all in but just different products that best suit me. Maybe if ABC Reagents makes them at a lower cost or anyone else. I'll define do it then. Cheers my friend.

I can't justify the NP (as a trident owner). The Hanna checkers for nutrients are easy enough to use, and I definitely don't need to test them daily. Even the trident is wasteful to the point I run the tests manually unless I'm really trying to watch something specific. I have noticed NO degradation of test result accuracy running the reagents beyond 30 days after opening (or whatever excuse they use for mandating 4 tests a day). My tank is an SPS dominant nano so alk gets 2/day, or as needed as 90L water volume moves params quickly. I really appreciate the in depth look though, and if it was a business for me, i'd probably buy it right away :).
@TreasureCorals

Very good point. I agree that with Trident my preference would've been to do it at half the frequency. Alkalinity twice a day and calcium/mag once a day is more than enough for most folks and even business owners in my opinion. Having said that whenever I see Alkatronic testing alk every hour (or whatever it is) I always want one just because :) The most interesting thing to me here is how are all of these parameters and nutrients tied to our coral activity and health and light cycle, and I think that only now we are starting to understand it better and that's also because of those automated testers.
@PnCBio
@PnCBio Ай бұрын
@@TreasureCorals I couldn't agree more, the advent of these autotesters has allowed us great insight into our tanks. I wouldn't try an acro heavy nano without such ease in testing, the alk swings too fast for my laziness in testing.

Ignore the trolls. People nowadays are looking for a reason to be upset. I’m sorry we are in a niche hobby with low rate of retention. I waited to get the old trident used to save some money. Just wait a few months and people whom bought it will eventually sell it as this hobby has such a high drop out rate. I love the lets be made at a $1000 item when people spend tens of thousands of dollars on their tanks. If it’s not for you move and leave the rest of us alone whom like these types of technology. It’s a premium product stick with you manual testers if you don’t want to justify the price.

@TreasureCorals
@TreasureCorals Ай бұрын
Not sure why you’d think I can’t talk about the price :) In my reviews on this channel I try to give my own perspective and thoughts on a particular product. I do not focus on publicly available things too much such as price, technical specs or instructions. I think anyone can check the price of a product and I don’t think I am in the position to tell anyone whether it is too expensive or not. Our hobby is quite strange where one coral can cost 15 dollars and another coral that would look similar to non-hobby people would cost a thousand dollars. And clearly there is a market for both.

Oooph. Here add this other impossibly large unit to your already cramped space. Oh yeah, and you also need to have our apex control unit to use or read it. All for the low price of 700 dollars. Aperture really is hitting some dingers lately.
@TreasureCorals
@TreasureCorals Ай бұрын
Impossibly large? Not sure one could make it a lot smaller. Reagent bottles themselves take up most space and there are only 3 ways one could arrange them. I think it is a philosophy of the company not to do any standalone units as you are part of the ecosystem with authentication, notifications and single point of control. As for pricing - I can't comment as to how much they need to be profitable but if one takes into accounts costs of R&D, patents, manufacturing, packaging, marketing and labour - I'm sure it all adds up and you still want to make profit on top, otherwise there's no point. Just my two cents.

I honestly don’t mind sponsored videos and I always find some kind of true in them, and as a subscriber I love most of the videos you made, but after watching this video I want to say this is so much utterly nonsense in this videos alone, firstly as a experienced reefer like yourself you making it like you struggle with your nitrate phosphate dinos because you wasn’t running the NP. IF YOU NEED THE NP to get this “least important” element in check you shouldn’t be in the game. What is your biggest swing for nitrate and phosphate? How important is this product in our hobby for you to make it revolutionary? Full of nonsense
@TreasureCorals
@TreasureCorals Ай бұрын
Probably I should not be in this game because that's exactly what happened to me, I bottomed out on those parameters and got Dinos. In addition to this I think nitrates and phosphates are one of the most important parameters to focus on and have been saying this for all the years of me keeping multiple reef tanks.

@LordHillAquarium
@LordHillAquarium Ай бұрын
@@TreasureCorals I agree, there is a balance. Reagents have a life, they have to be used up before they become unreliable. It's the same with all test kits, but some people treat them as if they last forever. Waterlink does this with their Spintouch tester. I bought 50 tests that last a year, so that's 1 test a week with a 2 week vacation.

Thumbs up for the video, Thumbs DOWN for the cost of this unit.. It's a re-skinned trident that does 1 test LESS. Is the high cost for the reagents? Moreover, can you imagine what these greedy bastards would've charged in a good economy?
@TreasureCorals
@TreasureCorals Ай бұрын
Thanks for the thumbs up. Technically it is actually more bottles and I'm sure the chemical reactions might be harder than the first three. I also think that a company has to cover R&D, staffing and other costs as well as making a healthy margin to be around for all of us who use their products. Definitely respect your opinion on how pricey it can get, unfortunately our hobby in general can get extremely expensive, don't get me started on the costs of torches or some other in vogue corals. Ouch.
