Check out the Harlem Globetrotters if you want more hoops. They were a group of black guys that were put together in the 1930's as a group of ambassadors. They went around the world playing the Generals, a team of players who would help set up their opponents, the Globetrotters, to do trick plays. The group went on for decades and was always a favorite on TV. I loved Meadowlark Lemon when I was a kid. They were so funny and the whole neighborhood shut down when they were on TV. You couldn't miss it. We didn't have archival footage at the tips of our fingers. Chances were, if you missed it, you never saw it again. Anyway, I know you'll enjoy it if you like hoops and comedy.

This team is why many European boys at the time were inspired to drop their soccer ball and pick up a basketball. Today's NBA is loaded with European star players because of the 1992 Dream Team.

That team Won every single game, on their way to gold by 30+. The world of Basketball got embarrassed that year, but the weird part was, it felt like the most of the world was happy to get embarrassed by them, if it meant they got to touch the same court.

I remember watching live on T.V. and every game I thought less people would show but more and more people packed that stadium from all the teams to fans etc. It was the place to be during that Olympics.

Several teams after were referred to as “Dream Team Part…whatever”. While those teams were legit NBA All Star teams, this was the ultimate collection of talent that just happened to come together at the perfect moment in history.

You may have missed it, but Toni Kukoc of Croatia had been drafted by the Bulls, and so Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen, the two Bulls players, were debating who were going to guard him and, in essence, shut him down

We’ve just done this episode on The Last Dance. They went quite in-depth. Seems he was collateral to get to Jerry, but glad he came back for the Final and pushed through. Kukoc seems like a tough guy. Appreciate the comment 🙏

Fun Facts: The members of the Dream Team combined for 23 NBA championship rings. The Dream Team roster combined for 15 NBA MVP awards. When the NBA at 50 released its top 50 players of all time in 2017, a total of 10 members of the Dream Team made that list. The only players that were not on the top 50 were Chris Mullin and Christian Laettner. The 12 players on the Dream Team combined for 117 NBA All-Star Game appearances. Jordan and Malone led the way with 14 appearances each over their entire careers. Eight of the top 50 NBA scorers of all time played on the Dream Team. That list includes Karl Malone (36,928), Jordan (32,292), Patrick Ewing (24,815), Charles Barkley (23,757), Clyde Drexler (22,195), Larry Bird (21,791), David Robinson (20,790) and John Stockton (19,711).

The transformation began in the 1972 Olympics when the US team (comprised of college kids) lost a disputed game to the USSR. it became harder and harder to win after that, and then finally lost fair and square to the USSR in the 1988 Olympics. That's when it was understood that the US could no longer count on slapping together a team a few weeks before the Olympics started, made up of college kids and had to use PROs.

The NBA also invested millions into other countries to develop their domestic talent and sent players and coaches as ambassadors to essentially transfer US knowledge of the game overseas. It's the single biggest reason why other countries are so competitive on the world stage today

They brought a healthy dose of pride not only for their country, but for basketball and their own ability to be the very best that was ever assembled. And yet did not allow ego to be an issue of any sort.

Not best basketball team ever assembled but best sports team ever assembled period. I was a bit to young to remember Beatlemania but the reaction the Dream Team had at the 1992 Olympics was the closest thing i ever saw that came close to it. It almost felt wrong for them to be competing at the Olympics because they were so good and you never saw domination like that at the Olympics.

@@dsfddsgh Actually the Soviet hockey team from the mid 60s onward was probably the greatest collection of athletes up until the Dream Team. They routinely blew out other countries to get the gold medal which is why the USA beating them in 1980 was such a huge upset.

Every single player on this squad except one (Christian Laettner, the college player selected over Shaq) is in the Basketball Hall of Fame. And Laettner is even in the college basketball hall of fame. I don’t think there’s ever been a team assembled with all individuals recognized separately as the best at their sport ever. Definitely the greatest team ever.

@DNReacts The Dream Team was put in to the NBA hall of fame as a unit. So technically he is in the NBA hall of fame. He also played 13 season in the league so he wasn't a bad player at all.

Ironically, The Domination of every Country in 1992 with nothing but NBA Hall-Of-Famers from the U.S- sparked a generation of non-Americans who they themselves would be future NBA Hall-Of-Famers and has made the rest of the world more competitive in the game of Basketball and 1992's dominance has never nor will ever be repeated again.

There's a full length documentary on this (probably more than one) that I recommend you watch even if you can't post it on KZfaq. This video felt a little too short to really do this team justice. There was a lot of context that was missing, like some of the guys on the team weren't even sure they wanted to accept the invite. This was like a last hurrah for Magic because he had already retired from the NBA. Bird had retired too, so his back problems were at their peak. And yet, these 2 retired players were both named captain of the team. It sort of feels like the happy ending of the sports movie that was their rivalry.

Yeah to be honest this video doesn't do the full one justice at all. It's just stolen clips with cheesy music added. The controversy of player selection, the egos of all the players involved, the genius coaching to manage those egos, the initial awkward practices, the passing of the torch from the old guard to the new king, the gradual friendships that formed, and even just the players' experiences traveling around the world are way more interesting than this.

I went out of my way to catch every game on tv to see this team. The sheer talent and class of this team was unparalleled. The other team members would line up to try and take pictures and "touch" them, like they were gods. It was unreal. Edit: Not even the greatest team ever in soccer (Barcelona of 08/09 I think, with Messi, Ronaldinho and all those guys) can't even touch this team.

Charles Barkley was saying how even in that 1st round game against Angola, he was playing his hardest because "If we lose, it'll be the greatest upset in sports history," and they'd never live it down. He got a bit of criticism for one point in that game where he threw an elbow that got a skinny Angolan right in the chest and sent him flying. When they asked the Angolan player about it after the game, he said he was honored that Barkley had thrown an elbow at him.

Funny that you guys mentioned The Avengers b/c there are definitely some parallels since The Dream Team's players were competitive against each other due to their huge egos. But then in their first practice game against college players, they started to lose b/c they didn't immediately gel. Made worse by coach Chuck Daly not making any adjustments and ending the game before they could make a comeback. Which mirrors the events of the 2012 film where the superheroes lost against Loki after arguing against each other, then Nick Fury gives them a "push" by lying about where Phil Coulson's trading cards were found.

Perfect description. He was a magician with the ball. The craziest part is that for almost his entire career, the Jazz were mostly a 2-man show: Stockton and Malone. Everybody knew that he was going to pass to Malone, and they still couldn't defend it.

They chose one college kid for the team. They chose Christian Laettner over Shaq. Of course, Shaq had a better NBA career, but Laettner was college player of the year and probably had the most decorated college career ever. He led Duke to four Final Fours and two championships-including game winning baskets twice to get them to two of those Final Fours. They probably should have just picked 12 NBA players though, and Isiah Thomas probably should have been the 12th guy, but guys on the team (particularly Jordan) had a beef with Thomas.

Some people weren't happy about the US moving away from its carved-in-stone tradition of the Olympics being an all amateur athletic competition. Having one college player on the roster was a nod to that longstanding tradition to smooth the transition. . Laettner was the best college player that year.

The difference IMO is Laettner could make a basket more than 3 ft away. Shaq will use his body to get close to the basket before he would even attempt to shoot. Barkley was a much better player than Shaq. Shame he didn't win a championship and has to have Shaq throw it in his face constantly. Its not the best players that win championships in many cases. Look at Luc Longley...perfect example.

Y'all can't probably react to the Dream Team documentary on the channel because of length, copyright and whatnot. But do yourselves a favor and watch it on your own time. The behind the scenes aspect of how the team was put together, their individual experiences, how they bonded, the public's reaction to their mere presence are all super interesting aspects of the team.

The difference between the Dream Team and everybody else was larger on defense than offense. The level of defense the US played did not exist in any other league in the world at that time. Jordan and Pippen were apex defensive predators. The Dream Team could basically write the final score for most of these games.

This is the best sports team ever assembled, the only other team with even a small argument is the 2008 Olympic redeem team, or the 2012 Olympic team, who had Kobe, Lebron, Durant, Carmelo, Dwight Howard, D Wade etc. even with this stacked team, the sheer amount of superstars that played for the dream team puts them a level ahead for me

Shaq was still in college. The player that wasn't picked you may be thinking of was Isiah Thomas, the great point guard for the Detroit Pistons. He and MJ had a beef and Jordan basically made that caĺl.

They wanted one college player on the Dream Team and it ended up being Christian Laettner over Shaq because Laettner won back to back titles with Duke.

It wasn't just MJ that didn't want Thomas. Thomas was Magic's best friend and was the first to ditch him when he got HIV insinuating that magic was gay, just one of several reasons some players on the dream team didn't want him to be on it. including the 2 captains and others.

It's not often that a team full of the greatest players in the game, can actually rise above the individual greatness, and form a cohesive team. When Quincy Jones was assembling the talent for We Are The World by U.S.A. For Africa, he had a sign made for all of the talent to read, as they walked into the studio. It said "Check Your Ego At The Door". That's what had to happen with this team. The Gold Medal is bigger than the sum of all of those players. There will never be a better team than that, unless human beings mutate into a more perfect form.

I believe Barkley was also on the next US Olympic team. He has said that the spirit of that next team was nowhere near the Dream Team. The original was a once in a lifetime experience. A true _team_ with a common goal.

Dream Team 1992 is the best dream team (there were more than one) for me because they made the most impact for their intentions as they were the first reaction to how some other countries were using pro-athletes for the Olympics beforehand since 1986, but not the US yet. You have to remember that during this time, the world was not ready to see NBA-level athleticism & scoring in the Olympics. Sadly, I was able to watch only 1 or 2 games though as I was busy then, heh. My favorite player of all time is Clyde Drexler & I was happy he was the last pro to have been chosen just in time. That is because Clyde made a huge statement with his playing during the 1992 All-Star Game a week before the Olympics, which was probably one factor for getting him selected asap for the Dream Team. Since then, the world has slowly been catching up to the NBA as far as world basketball games, pro or amateur, such as in Olympics, FIBA etc & the US has lost a few of those.

USA basketball continued a run of dominance up until 2002-2006, underperforming in both FIBA and Olympic tournaments as the rest of the world caught up. What followed was revamp of USA Basketball up until the 2008 Olympics on Beijing. The team that played in 2008 is known as the Redeem Team. Good doc on Netflix about them.

The USA's first game was against Angola. A couple of days before the game, Charles Barkley was asked by a reporter what he knew about Angola. He replied, "All I know is that they're in trouble."

I think besides the talent what sets the 1992 team apart is that (1) they had perfect balance with historical greatness represented in all phases of the game (inside shooting, outside shooting, passing, defense at every level, quickness, physicality, etc), and (2) you had three of the most mentally unbreakable players ever in Magic/Bird/Jordan, as well as others like Barkley that were so highly motivated. They could handle the pressure of "if we lose it's the greatest upset of all time." There are other teams with a lot of talent, but not these two added factors to the degree that this team had them.

The only other team i can think of with this level of dominance is the 1928-1956 India Men’s Field Hockey Team, they were not as popular but they won every single gold medal in that timespan

I think the only team that would stand a chance against the 92 team would be the 96 team because of their size. There were moments that the 96 team would have Shaq, Hakeem Olajuwon, and David Robinson on the floor at the same time. If you know anything about all 3 of these guys, you know that is an unstoppable beast of a front court. David Robinson was also on the 92 team you just watched

When they were playing in the Tournament of the Americas, held in Portland, to qualify for the Olympics, Bird didn't play a lot because of his back issues and the fact that they had a long transatlantic flight ahead of them. Flights were very hard on Bird's back. In fact, his back doctor went with him to Barcelona. Anyway, at one point, while Bird was sitting or lying on the floor on the sideline, the crowd started chanting "Larry, Larry, Larry..." His teammates seconded that and had Larry check into the game for the fans. In another of those games, as they were starting the 4th qtr, I believe, one of the referees who was from a South American country, I think, came to Larry and the bench and asked that Larry play, if only for a few minutes, so that he could tell his family that he had refereed a game that the great Larry Bird had played in. ❤️ ☘️ Larry Legend

To all the young people, please remember that for all the decades prior to this team, only amateurs were allowed to participate in the Olympics. This was the first time America put together a team of professionals and sent them to the Olympics. The results speak for themselves. The whole world was shocked, it was amazing to watch.

My favorite Dream Team fact came from another documentary on it (I forget which one), but most everyone on the Dream Team wasn't really able to do much without getting mobbed (Even a 'smaller' person like Charles or Chris Mullin are still 6'6" and stand out a lot). John Stockton on the other hand was able to just go out and be part of the crowd, do touristy stuff with his family etc. They had one time where their bus got stuck and he just got off and walked and it wasn't a problem, to the slight envy of some other people on the bus.

I come back to this video periodically and I'm still amazed at the overwhelming talent on this team! Many of the players are considered among the 50 best players EVER! We will never see such a collection of talent on a basketball court again.

Why Tony became one of my favorite players. The first game he was surprised by how aggressive the dream teams defense was since Euro basketball wasn't playing that kind of defense. The second game he rebounded and played good. The guys thought he was soft but didn't know the man grew up in q wore torn country. He was a teen when his country was in a conflict. Tony is also known as the MJ of European basketball.

From a world wide standpoint this is why the NBA is so popular the absolute stardom on the court during that Olympics was unprecedented and I remember people LOSING their minds during it. Hockey was too evenly spread out in Europe that it never had the same dominance. Also the best teams were not American until closer to the 2000s so that hurt as well.

During 1992 Olympics at Barcelona, the players on other teams were awestruck … getting autographs & photos. NBA was concerned about player injuries.

The Toni Kukoč story is great. Drafted by the Bulls in 1990 but they couldn't reach an agreement on a contract til 1993. Needless to say, at this point during the Olympics MJ and Scottie had a lil chip on their shoulder about him 😏 He would later go on to win the final 3 Bulls championships. Still lives in Chicago suburbs and is very active in the community and in the high school basketball circuit. Awesome guy!

Tony was liked by both MJ and Scottie Pippen. Shutting Tony down in the Olympics wasn't because they didn't like Tony -- they didn't like the Bulls general manager at the time, Jerry Krause, who said things about Tony's signing that didn't sit well with the Bulls players. Tony was great with the Bulls.

The reason they were called the Dream Team is because it was a "dream" for Magic, Larry and MJ to be on the same team. Players didn't move around like they do now, so having Magic, Larry and MJ take to the floor together was a dream come true.

Probably not as good as the Dream Team (global competition was also better in 2012) but the 2012 US Men's olympic team was stacked as well. LeBron, Kobe, KD, Melo, Russell Westbrook, Anthony Davis, Chris Paul, James Harden, etc. Multiple future Hall of Famers. They won gold, but not as easily. Dream Team really inspired other countries to step their game up lol basketball is now a truly global sport!

kukoc was an incoming rookie for chicago bulls, and he played for his national team before the start of the NBA season .. and he was given a very warm PRE-NBA welcome by his bulls seniors ... MJ & scottie took turn defending kukoc, gave him hell the whole game !! thats how PSYCHOTIC MJ was, and scottie adapted that mentality to be able to be his wingman ... kukoc became the 6TH man of MJ's bulls, a 6'10 SF that can score and defend ... one of the best 6th man in the history of NBA ..

I was a kid and super into basketball at the time but I had all of the team players as basketball cards and I was super into the dream team lol. Stockton and Malone together is basically a wrap. Back in the era where 3 pointers weren't such a big thing even though people could shoot them. Reggie Miller is someone I consider who changed it up.

You have to realize that those opposing players from places like Angola were absolutely thrilled to be on the same court as the Dream Team. These were players they had all idolized. They didn't care if they were annihilated, they got to play against their heroes!

The beating that the Dream Team dealt to the world was really the catalyst that spurred all the other basketball playing countries to step up their game. Allowing professional athletes in the Olympics encouraged the world to get better at basketball. You get better when you play against the best.

This was before Shaq's rookie year in the NBA.....although, college player, Christian Leatner was chosen...because he was the better known college player, and had led his Duke University team to two consecutive NCAA Championships, and was the only collegiate player....he basically was there to carry the pros' bags, haha! At the time, when the "Dream Team" was assembled and announced, I was working at an Irish-inspired sports bart and grill, here in California...the owner and several employees were from the UK....and there was one Kiwi from NZ.......And they were all "crying" saying "That's not fair!"........I just smiled and laughed...knowing that we were going to destroy everyone else, haha! Other teams? The "Redeem Team" in 2008 was pretty damn good, too! Also the 2008 USA Olympic swim team was pretty unstoppable, as a whole, for that matter! However, the assemblage of this team was very special!

The only team I can think of other than this one that was so dominate it wasn't even fair was the 1993 US mens 4x400 team at the world championships. A world record that still stands to this day.

Shannon Miller vs Tatiana Gutsu in the women's gymnastics all around at these games was epic. Gutsu edged out Miller by 0.012, the smallest margin of victory in the history of women's gymnastics in the Olympic all arounds. 1992 was the last year that the Summer and Winter Olympics were held the same year.

There are a couple of stories about scrimmages that the Dream Team had prior to the Olympic qualifiers and the Olympics. One was an intersquad scrimmage where they split the team into two and had the team play each other. Called the "greatest basketball game never seen." Then there were two scrimmages between the Dream Team and a select team of some of the best college players in the US. The first game that was played between the two the college team actually won. Some say that the final score had the college team winning by 20, but that is highly debatable. Another reported score was 62-54. However, it is believed that the Dream Team head coach intentionally kept some the best players on the bench for long stretches and made some bad play calls that forced the Dream Team to lose. He did so to show the Dream Team players that they could in fact lose if they didn't come ready to play. They played the same college players again the next day and crushed them, some claiming that the Dream Team beat the college players by 100 points.

Seattle Supersonics player and German born Detlef Schrempf initially thought, like many others, that the Dream Team was overkill. Until, that is, he was home visiting Germany and discovered that it was the consensus among German professional basketball players that the NBA wasn't all that much better than the German league. Detlef decided it was worth it to send our best.

No, that was by far the greatest team ever assembled. There may have been a time where the NFL could have done something like this as far as matching pure talent, but American Football isn't played internationally. Too many people play baseball and hockey around the world now where one country could dominate like the Dream Team did.

I think the most appropriate analogy to the Dream Team playing in the 1992 Olympics would be having the Special Air Service send a group of operators to a paintball tournament. Charles Barkley gave voice to what many in the USA were feeling, which was that it wasn't that the other countries were using professionals, but that they were then acting as if they had beaten the best in the world by defeating a bunch of kids who were barely old enough to buy alcohol. I think that, if the pros hadn't been preening and posturing like they did, then the 1992 Olympics might not have been the metaphorical slaughter that it was when it came to basketball.

There has never been a better team. The Dream Team could beat you inside or outside. They could outrun you, outrebound you, outdefend you, and outshoot you. Christian Laettner was the lone collegiate player to make the team and was the 3rd pick in the draft that year. Shaq was first pick, and Alonzo Mourning was the 2nd.

Larry was a Small Forward but that is just the name of the position he played for the Celtics. He was one of the bigger SFs in the league and would have played Power Forward for most teams. His team had Kevin McHale and Robert Parrish, who were both even taller than Bird, but they were known as a particularly tall and tough front court (forwards and center). In today's NBA, Bird would likely be a big man and is seen as one of the first modern big men who could shoot from deep, pass, and even handle the ball, as well as rebound and post up like a traditional big.

The scores in the '92 Olympics were laugh out loud hilarious, it was beautiful. Those same teams that beat up on US college kids in the previous Olympics got straight up embarrassed over and over again in this one. I just think how bad things could get for the rest of the world if Soccer became the US's number one, or even number four sport

The repercussions of this team world-wide are huge. Because of this team, the international popularity of basketball skyrocketed. There are more NBA fans in China, than there are in the US. So many NBA stars have risen from other counties, that the US can no longer dominate in the Olympics even with an all-star team, because the foreign-born NBA stars go back and play for their birth countries, evening out the playing field considerably.

I remember watching the 1988 loss to the Soviet Union and the 1992 dream team. I don't think I have seen a team as good internationally since. The previous team that came close to the 1992 team in sheer talent was the 1960 US Olympics Team. Nine of the players went on to play in the NBA, and has such stars as Walt Bellamy, Bob Boozer, Oscar Robertson, Adrian Smith and Jerry West. Not to mention college player Jerry Lucas who is in the Basketball Hall of Fame. Many of the records the 1992 team beat were set by the 1960 team. Also both the 1992 and 1960 teams were entered into the Basketball Hall of fame the same year.
