Should be mentioned that Arsenal haven't started a single game this season with last season's main front 3 of Jesus, Saka and Martinelli. Once they get a run of games together I believe our attacking play will improve a lot.

Well during the first 8 games either one of Jesus, Martinelli, or Saka have been injured with Nketiah and Havertz filling in for them. I expect better offensive output from the team going forward and if there's one player we need, it's a right winger as a cover for Saka so that Jesus can play central.

I've never rated Jesus finishing, he's the type of player who will always get his shot on target but it will be right at the keeper.

I said at the time they’d regret selling Balogun. Too early to make a definitive answer but if he turns out to be the kind of guy that could’ve solved this problem, would be quite brutal.

Agreed. Still not sure why they didn't just sell Nketiah and keep Balogun. Between him and Jesus I'm sure they would have been able to give him enough game time, and at least I think he'd do just as good as Nketiah, but with a lot more potential to go further.

I think the overemphasis on the defensive output of forwards may have gone a bit too far. Sure pressing and dropping deep may disrupt the buildup and drain energy from the opposition defenders, but so can a menacing classic 9 who simply has to be taken care of.

yes, if Arteta can be so ruthless with the GK position, i do not understand why there is so much patience with Eddie. A striker who is more efficient and effective in front of goal has more impact on each game than the small incremental gains that Raya probably brings.

I like Jesus but I don't see him ever scoring more than 15 goals a season. Nketiah has moments of brilliance but for me he's nowhere near consistent enough and a lot of his goals seem to be in the less important games. I'd keep Jesus as a back up and for cup games, then sell Nketiah and buy someone like Osimhen or maybe Toney. If Osimhen is £150m and Toney is £100m, I think the extra £50m would probably be worthwhile.

Toney would be a very good addition imo. Especially since Jesus can play out wide so it would help with rotations a lot. It'll probably cost Arsenal close to £100m but I really think he'd be a 20 goal a season striker there. Though maybe Raya's poor start might scare Arsenal a bit around buying Brentford players.

Toney could score more goals but would it be drastically more than what Jesus would have got if he didn’t miss 3 months of the season last year? No. And a lot of his goals last season were penalties and came from counter attacks. We need a striker but it needs to be someone that can drop deep, and give the wingers the space to come inside, link up play, and still press like a dog and be a guaranteed 20+ scorer. They aren’t many strikers out there like that.

Gabriel Jesus does do a lot more than just go for goal, but his finishing quality has fallen off a cliff. In his first two seasons at City he was a lethal finisher. Now he's converting about as often as Werner did at Chelsea. He creates a decent amount with passing, he creates chances with take-ons, he's a very progressive passer for a forward, he's a progressive carrier, and he gets through a ton of defensive work. Could he be redeployed elsewhere and work around more of a traditional poacher type? Arsenal feels like the kind of team that could bring the 442 back with a second striker, but since that would push Ødegaard out wider (or out completely), why not a 4231? The 433 makes no sense. It seems like GJ would suit playing just behind the usual front three, dropping to bolster the two behind but also supporting the attack with both progressive and creative actions.

I agree. I feel like Nketiah is still there bc Arteta still expects him to turn out to be like Saka but it has consumed massive amount of time now and he’s been piss poor and became worse.

I would love to see Toney at Arsenal, Jesus and Nkethia have always been great at movement and poor finishers whereas Toney is intelligent big and ruthless

Yes finally someone explained it with supporting data. Arsenal deserve a striker that scores more than just the biggest, easiest chances. Everyone defending Jesus and nketiah, especially right after they scored, always conveniently forgets about all the sitters they missed

Jesus has only started 1 game up front due to injury, with our front 3 only playing 23 mins together. When Jesus plays central our xg rockets because of his ability to retain the ball in in the most congested and high xg areas (zone 14 and half spaces). If we get Toney we'll lose this abilty as his ball retention (contrary to popular belief) is poor - lower 5th percentile for successful passing and ranging from 50-60% passing accuracy across his career. He's also not mobile enough to rotate like Jesus does.

Toney is not fast enough to do all the off the ball requirements. I like him as a plan b, but arsenal are targeting signings they plan to use as first team regulars (whether that pans out every time or not)

We have players that we know can score goals, so let's buy a new player to fix our problem and not work with the issue we have in the team. If this is not a prime example of something that could and should be worked with inside the team I don't know what is.

Finding a way to keep Balogun could have been a nice option. I get that it was unrealistic since he wanted to start but surely he could do more than Nketiah in the starting striker role.

Arsenal haven't scored stupid numbers of goals, but have spent a lot of time in the opposition's box, which draws penalties out more often. Only 1 penalty has occurred against a team that wasn't playing in a low block most of the match.

Lovely video JJ! It must be said that people who are praising Arteta’s tactics really need to check out City from 2018-2022. This was all taught by Pep so it’s really cool to see it working so well with this young team. Arteta’s got a bright future ahead in management. I would be interested to see whether he’d struggle to get the most out of a striker like Toney

Toney isn't a clear upgrade on Gabriel Jesus... Just different strengths and abilities. The fact is, it's going to be hard to upgrade Striker for Arsenal as you could only say the likes of Kane & Osimhen guarantee goals.. I can see other strikers struggling
