I can completely relate to Wes' goat story. I had a similar experience when we celebrated one Christmas back in Dominican Republic. Our holiday dinners usually consist of whole roasted pork, that is slow cooked in a "caja china" and moro (a Dominican rice and beans dish). Growing up they tried the turkey route, but gave up unless we have non- dominican guests 😂.

Story time! I'm a 25 year old Chinese man who grew up in SGV and when I was in high school, I think that was when my family started celebrating American Thanksgiving. I remember the first two times, we bought an Asian Roasted Turkey from a Chinese Restaurant which came with sticky rice. It was pretty good. Then, senior year and after high school, we started doing American Turkey and thats pretty much when I started to cook a lot more. Nowadays, during TG, I'll roast a chicken either Peruvian style or Chinese-style and make a bunch of side dishes that often include: pumpkin pie, Japanese potato salad (doesn't go good with gravy), roasted brussel sprouts, yang chow fried rice, etc. Why do I cook such a multi-cultural meal? Because this meal really represents my ideals: I highly value the multi-cultural richness that exists in the world and with the Internet and access to the right ingredients, I can cook South American food, Vietnamese, Chinese food, Mexican food, and the list goes on. To me, TG really is about the entire family coming together and spending time with each other. Thats what drives me to work hard and cook up an entire meal for my family. I highly value my family, even more after my mother's passing this year. I don't spend time with friends during this time. I even broke ties with every person I knew from high school due to person reasons. Even though I grew up in a predominantly asian neighborhood and schools, I perceive myself as being an American before being Chinese. As someone who is smart and skilled, I feel like its my responsibility to be a friend to everyone, regardless of culture/ethnicity, and making people feel welcomed and not feel like any culture is superior to another. EDIT: Added details.

My mom always makes jook with leftover turkey too! One thing we're doing differently this year is roasting potatoes; the last few years the potatoes were undercooked even though the bird was cooked, so this time we're gonna follow an actual recipe and boil them first then put them in the oven separately 😂🤞

Though we started thanksgiving way later. I remember there was one day I just asked my mom if we were ever going to celebrate thanksgiving and she was like " ... do you really want to celebrate it?" Since then we have celebrated thanksgiving but this year my mom said she was too lazy to cook a huge a** turkey so she bought chicken instead :'D

My family did crab for Thanksgiving because my aunt was getting sick of turkey (she usually makes most of the food) and I'm so glad because the crab was so delicious. And we also sit on the floor with a tarp every time so that's kind of funny that Jen's family does the same thing and we put our food on the table, buffet style too. We have less people though and we actually do talk just because we're so close. It's like a casual Thanksgiving while my other family (my dad's side) is a traditional Thanksgiving (around the table, basic Thanksgiving stuff like turkey and mashed potatoes, I also drank a lot of apple cider). We also sort of Asian gambled on my mom's side (I say Asian gambling because it's a Vietnamese game called Bau Cua ca cop, where we have a mat with a pear, deer, crab, fish, chicken and prawn and we bet on money on which animal or thing the three dices will land on and if the dice lands on the animal or thing we picked, we get double the money, (get to keep what you bet on plus double so 1 dollar = 2 dollars). If two dices land on the same animal or thing you get triple the money and so on but we've never seen three dices land on the same animal or thing before). Also, my mom and dad sort of did santa but also not. My dad or mom used to drink the milk and eat the cookies when I woke up but I figured out that Santa wasn't real when my mom told me to put pocky on my list (because she already bought it) and my mom told me to brush my teeth but I went downstairs to check instead but it wasn't there so I went upstairs to brush my teeth and suddenly when I went downstairs, it was there. Yeah, I kind of connected the dots. My mom and dad didn't do a great job of doing the tooth fairy either because they told me to put the tooth in the bathroom, because why not and then if I put it under my pillow, I could feel them lifting it because I'm a light sleeper. At least they tried. 😅
