I have deer hunted 45 years on both Public and Private lands. Not all acorns are the same, some are bitter, some are less bitter...Deer will walk past hundreds of Acorns to get to the "better" tasting acorns that may be hundreds of yards away.. In my area White oak acorns are Deer Crack..In my experience when the acorns start falling the deer will mostly walk past corn to get to the acorns. Corn is an easier meal but acorns are more nutritious.

Northeast oklahoma here. we are rolling around on acorns this year.( 2023) I have had corn out and it’s being ignored. Just now, we are seeing corn being an attractant and i would say from right after Thanksgiving. So in my neck of the woods. White oak acorns are preferred when in season, Your boys are awesome. Kudos to you Dad. The outdoors is a great place to be. If you want more fun, take a deer carcass and film it. i have had everything from Bald eagles, red tail hawks to coyotes and their showdowns with the eagles. Your kids would love it.

In Northwest Minnesota we had a heavy acorn drop. They fell early this year, mid August. Early November deer season the deer were still eating on acorns. I had soybeans and corn planted. They lightly browsed but stayed in the oaks to eat acorns. Stomachs had lots of whole acorns.

Much depends on time of year and location. Here in Tennessee when the Whiteoak acorns are freshly fallen, deer will abandon everything else, even soybeans, to feed on the fresh sweet acorns. No doubt though, shelled corn will bring all sorts of wildlife from afar.

Id agree, especially native (not planted as an ornamental) white oaks that don't produce such huge acorns. They seem to like a medium-large white oak acorn better then the ones the size of a golf ball. And they like to browse for them rather than eat them in a pile. Red oak acorns are smaller and more tannins and produce a crop every year unlike white oaks which take a couple years per mast so i think they get kinda tired of them. Eat them because they need to not because it's their favorite. But the white oaks are less plentiful so they hammer them when they drop. Persimmons and pawpaws too. Cattle will eat acorns too. After a wind storm they'll eat green ones till they get tannin toxicity and die if too many got knocked down. Wild forages like acorns are why farmers in the Appalachian mountains can run cattle on woods without much grass as a supplement to smaller grass pastures.

I did similar test in Kentucky with acorns, whole corn, and persimmons. I found a persimmon tree and picked up persimmons as they fell and kept them in the freezer until i had all i could get. Deer preferred corn, but i think that was largely determined by what type of calories/fats/starches they craved, similarly to how we sometimes crave salt, sweet etc.

Were the acorns from red/black oak family trees or white oak family? White oak acorns are a *lot* sweeter than red oak acorns. Our chinkapin oak acorns don't usually make it to the ground in one piece - every bird, squirrel, and chipmunk is after them. But nothing touches our black oak acorns, except the squirrels, and they bury them. Red/black acorns get a little sweeter over the winter, and the squirrels are happy to eat a bitter acorn in March when there's nothing else.

Great video for and with the boys ! 😊 ...most often deer prefer white acorns over most others..but a lot of different elements contribute to the feeding patterns. Time of year, temperature, ect.. deer are very intelligent eaters.. they prefer browsing on natural plants over anything. Watch them when they brows, what they eat, we can also consume as humans, without getting sick.. Another tid ' bit, Corn 🌽 creates ' heat, in a deers 🦌 body, so if it is extremely hot out,..they will leave the corn alone..,and prefer brows... That is why the corn is consumed heavily in cold temperatures , and in late fall and winter...Great 👍, seeing getting those young boys involved..😊

Not all acorns are the same. Red oak acorns are bitter for most of the Winter but fed heavily on late Winter. White Oak acorns are "candy" to deer. They will be on them as soon as they begin to fall. If deer have the choice, will most always feed on Whites over any other acorn.

Not all acorns are the same...like others have posted, white oak acorns are preferred by white tails and when they start falling the adult deer will walk past corn to get to them....however, the young and old deer who can't compete with the stronger bucks and does will still hang around and eat corn. Deer can also, by scent, tell if an acorn is good or filled with worms, so, although they may look good doesn't mean a deer will eat them. A good way to tell if the acorn is good is by placing them in water...if they float they are no good. Corn is not as good nutritiously for deer as acorns and other natural food are....it will keep them alive but not as healthy.

Oak and Hickory trees have a seven year peak when it comes to wildlife. A tree that is at its peak , year seven, will be the first choice for squirrels and deer. That tree will be a six the following year and go down from there until it starts the process back up to seven. If you observe the squirrels they will show you the best tree. When they finish the seven trees they move to the six trees and so on,,,. It also depends on the mast drop time. You can discover some trees full of nuts that appears nothing is eating, that tree is somewhere on the scale below the top trees and will be eaten in turn.

When I buy hunting land I look for white oak and hickory trees. Deer like variety in their diet just like we do. Over the years I've planted various trees like sawtooth oak, dunst chestnut, beechnut, pear and apple. Along with a variety of food plots. I also prefer some sort of water feature on a property. A watering hole is a great feature for rutting bucks. Also tried supplemental feeding! IMO it was a waste of time and money. However, watching your boys having a interest in a bait pile setup. Priceless!

What deer eat depends upon what of what state you are in. Some states don't have acorn trees. Some don't grow corn. State conservation will be able to tell you what the deer feed on. Corn and acorns in the natural setting is only seasonal. Late summer and fall mainly. Deer eat lots of other plants as well. Try a food plot against the corn and acorns. Food plots grow at different times so the deer can eat through longer durations. On the other side, I think what you are doing with you're children is awesome . You are teaching "life skills". All children deserve to learn these things in life. It will help them some day. Great job DAD!!!!👍

Here in east texas when white oak acorns are dropping anywhere close to corn feeders , the deer walk right past the feeders to get to white oak acorns. They hardly touch corn until the acorns are gone or we get lots of rain and the dropped acorns sour, then they'll hit the corn feeders

It's a good thing you put those signs up. Else the deer would not have known which was the corn and which was the acorns. (Kidding, of course) Fun experiment! My guess is that the deer go for the food they are more used to. Around your area you likely have more corn, and the deer are not so leery of it.

I live in Georgia, I bought 100lbs of white oak acorns a few years ago. They rotted on the ground and in a feeder. The deer would eat 100lbs of corn in one night! My property and neighbors property have white oak and other oaks on the property. It was a waste of money for me but I learned something. They won't eat apples or sweet potatoes either. I did buy soybeans from a farmer neighbor and they worked well in a gravity feeder and the deer did eat them. I've been hunting 60 years and I'm still learning! That's what makes it fun, it's not the kill.

Some of it is because it’s not native to them and can be the acorn species. The deer in my area of SW Alabama will not touch Spanish oak acorns. A husband and wife couple in Mississippi managed a farm and raised many fawns through the years. They both bucks and does that came in their yard to eat and they would feed them from their back patio. If this is a lie the man told it, he said that one 8pt would come to the patio and drink his whiskey and water with him sitting there. He said it got to the point he had to fix the buck his own drink 😂! His wife did an experiment and put a small pile of different varieties of acorns down along with corn, soy beans, quail eggs and rice bran. She said the deer would always eat the quail eggs first! A biologist said it was something to do with the shell/calcium or something like that?! Enjoyed the video!

What a fun experiment for two young boys! Deer certainly prefer white oak acorns those of the red oak. I would guess the sweetness of corn is what deer like.

We used Bur Oak and Red oak acorns for this. Corn is sweet and high energy, but like you said with white oak it may have been a different reaction from the deer. Thanks for watching

With Deer, it depends on what other food sources are around, they are browsers and opportunists, easier chew, moisture content etc. Also dependent on water source and distance to water.

I hunt in far northern Minnesota, where the dominant tree is quaking aspen, followed by balsam, and then by a couple different species of pine. Oak trees are EXTREMELY rare, making acorns an unknown food source. Acorn scented attractants just don't work there.
