You did the test wrong. This should be a blind test. You can't tell them what's in the bait pile or they'll always go to the corn, you gotta switch the signs and see if they'll still eat from the "corn" pile.

Fun stuff. Like involving the kids and listening to their comments! I'll use the corn to bring the deer to the oats. 9x the protein in oats gives it the edge for nutrition. Corn has the edge for attraction.

Corn seed and oat seed is one thing. Grow the two plants, side by side, and the oats will be much more attractive, when they are young. Also, the corn is pure carbohydrates...it isn't much better for deer than it is for people. Put an equal amount of chestnuts next to the corn and oats, if you want to see what deer REALLY like, and it's something good for them.

Well done boys. It might be time dependent and even location dependent. I believe the oats are actually "better" food for the deer. If the deer are in need of a nutrient in oats then they will likely be drawn to it. I have seen deer eat acorns on the ground at the edge of a cut alfalfa field then graze/browse through the alfalfa to a cut corn field and eat for a bit then work over to a standing bean field eat for a bit and move on. But these deer of yours clearly preferred the corn at the time you observed them. How did you boys do this year? Did you get any of those nice buck.?
@BooneBoys

I think time dependent is a good observation. It’s interesting how deer won’t gorge themselves and leave food supply behind. Definitely not like our cattle.

Oats are supposed to be better (healthier) for the as the weather gets colder. Because the high carbohydrates and low fiber of the corn do not let the deer's digestive system adapt to the low nutrition of the natural vegetation.

How about learning to hunt deer wo bait?
@BooneBoys
@BooneBoys 6 ай бұрын
I could see how people might see it that way. I guess it’s all about time and location. I always looked at it like fishing with a bare hook or putting bait on a hook. If you have all the time in the world you’ll eventually get on with a hook and probably faster if the water is loaded with fish. Same thing deer hunting. If you are in open country you might never have an animal within a mile of where you have property to hunt if there isn’t anything to bring them close by. I appreciate the folks though that take the extra effort to do it without baiting or modern electronics/game cameras I would say is even more impressive. If somebody doesn’t believe in baiting I would think they would feel the same way about a game camera.
