In this episode of the ZigAnalysis, Tushar and Arun discuss why EVs are being shoved down our throats. Arun, having lived with multiple EVs over the past year has some interesting insights and anecdotes to share. Tushar, an owner of a Hybrid vehicle has very convincing points as to why Hybrids make so much sense. Both are equally frustrated at the hardliners for either side of the argument. Why can’t we all just live in peace?

Once a person drives an ev probably will never buy ice again.

Definitely, but you cannot resell the vehicle and you know how batteries are... It will degrade over time soo even if I don't use the car for let's say 1 year the battery still will go off then the charging infrastructure, you can definitely charge it at home but what about on a long trip? You need to find specific plug, specific charge point and you also need to plug it in for an hour atleast for a full charge.. Unless they solve all these these is no use in moving towards an EV
@chinmayau
@chinmayau 8 сағат бұрын
@@entername3840 good points. i would like to add few things ,resell- there is nothing in an EV which is a cause of depreciation like an ice car. Batteries are not going to degrade continuously. aftr a point they almost stop degrading. and they outlive the lifetime of an EV. Infra is getting built and we cannot wait until its absolutely perfect. EV sales and charging infra needs to move together. Battery tech is improving at a rapid rate. soon we will have full battery within 15 min.
@entername3840
@entername3840 8 сағат бұрын
@@chinmayau I doubt battery degrading will stop after a time... Haven't u seen the old phones with doesn't even last 20 mins?... Imagine a car which doesnt last 10 Kms or miles... again 15 mins is wayy too long as in normal petrol stations they can refuel in 2 mins also you have seen the people in queue to get a fuel refill right? . So they can carter to 1 customer in 2 mins that means they can save a lot of time. In evs let's say if you are in a queue to charge in 15 mins it will be an eternity for the next guy and even more for the other one... To break even they want to make even more charging stations than the petrol pump. Then there is also saftey concerns we don't know where they are gonna put these charging units as this can also cause safety issues in isolated areas. Unless this technology can fix all these drawbacks and truly be a replacement to ICE there is no point in investing in EV especially on a long term

Lots of people have found themselves financially 'upside down' thanks to the 'cost saving green narrative' spun to the general public. Extreme example: The 2022 Audi E-Tron S has an 83KW usable battery, and costs £64 to fill (public UK rapid charger at 80p KW), and delivers about 190 miles of real world range, or 33p per mile. A Lamborghini Huracán with an 80L fuel tank, costs £112 to fill up (£1.40 per litre), and delivers about 330 miles of range, or 33p per mile. The depreciation costs on a 3 year old Huracan is about 15% (£40k), for the E-Tron S the 3 year depreciation cost is about 60% (£60k) Insurance costs for the two cars is broadly similar.

Where does petro come from? Mining! Even at the oceans, so much pollution that everyone ignores. People often forget battery can be 100 recycled and which is so so much easier than mining and does not require much energy and resources to refine. And can be recycled for infinite times. Petro cannot be recycled even once.

EVs don't make sense in any part of the world unless they're priced at the same level as ICE and the country's area is small(because of the range). At any other point, Hybrid's makes more sense. But again they're not cheap but they definitely work irrespective of the land area of the country. That is what Toyota has realized and only focuses on hybrid. Apart from this, I don't know about the carbon print implications of EVs and ICE. Having an EV is like buying into an ecosystem where you make your own electricity with solar stuff. Then it makes sense. Like the Apple ecosystem. So it's basically a rich man's endeavour but the most rich are buying Hybrids.

Nice Discussion (as always). 1. running costs of an EV was a strong point 4-5 years ago may be. Now a days you'll find hefty charge/unit on public charging. which will make EV marginally better than ICE. Govt assesses incoming tax from various departments. SO when Govt finds that the tax is decreasing from Auto Sector, especially EV department, they'll definitely match up the prices. off course with nominal futile reasons like infra cost, new land cost, electricity generation cost blah blah. Any country running on taxes won't reduce the Ownership cost of Mobility, because either way a user will spend on the mobility sector. Also gone are the days when 3-4 lac rupee cars were hottest and most sold cars. Now the disposable money from people have already sent a message to Govt that people are upgrading/ spending. there is no going backwards after that unless sudden jerks like covid hits. TCO of EVs will be matched slowly to ICEs. 2. You have considered the points only after ownership POV. what about manufacturing manpower POV. Majority chunk of population is direct dependent on Automobile sector. OEM employees, Parts Vendors, Service Workshops, Local Garages, Spares Stores, Lubricant manufacturers etc... According to SIAM 2021-22 this number was ~30-40 lacs. And the families dependent on them. This workforce engaged in ICE periphery won't go obsolete quickly, or so as the Govt intends to making them obsolete rapidly. 3. Gone are the days when OEM were taking time to invest in new models. the life cycle was 20-30 years for some cars. Now a days there are minor updates every year. And model is completely updates in 7 years or less. OEM's are quick in replacing failed models. 4. After watching and reading about Indian EV industry, I'm very much sure that the Babu's who are responsible for EV transition have made a mess out of it. 4a.First Phase- Make major cities the EV hub. instead of selling charging equipment and utilities along with vehicle make it a Public thing from day one. User should be sold the vehicle only. and whatever charging that EV needs should be provided by GOVT, similar to fuel pump. this method would've definitely brought the charging price way more down that the current price we are paying. 4b. second phase- develop highway charging infra and tier 2 cities, along the same methods from phase one. 4c. third phase- develop rest of infra countrywide. 5. Haphazard selling of EVs or rather 2W EVs was the worst decision from GOVT Babus. Everybody with disposable money brought lower quality EVs from china and sold them here. End user was suffered from this process. the mindset was harmed from this move. 6. The PLI schemes were partial about this. Ather Tarun has talked about this in Kamath's podcast, and they have asked Mr.Kant about the partiality of PLI schemes in their Community day at Ather in 2024 too. with vague and fruitless answers too from the topmost Sarkari Babu.

Honda who are masters globally in hybrid engine are silent inspite of having good petrol engines in India. All other Japanese brands are silently waiting if Govt is planning to give tax cut for strong Hybrid or not. If govt had given equal tax cut for both hybrid and EV by 2021, nobody would have run behind turbo petrol or EVs. But marketing is, launching turbos and milk amount by hiking petrol prices and hiking EB slab rates. I am sure that middle class persons who have bought cars paying high premium and taxes just for handling will regret once hybrid steps into India. Hybrid will take off in such a peak rate. All these 3 cylinders show off with turbo to lure customers are just marketing. They compete with prices in selling new cars and giving discounts. The catch is they are gonna make profits in servicing these cars. The beauty of extended warranty is not boasting their engine reliability. It’s just to retain the customers for next 5 years and make profits in service so that they have enough time build another prototypes or give a generation update. Nowadays brands fight among them with their marketing rather than focusing on engineering. Gone are those days where we get a reliable VFM products!

For now EVs are good if you have fixed routine of driving distance and you can get back to home with the remaining charge. Public charging infrastructure isn’t good anywhere across the globe. I have an EV6 in USA and finding a charging spot and availability is still a challenge with long distance travel. Wait times are significantly high even with 300kwh chargers. But once the charging spot is available it is just 20 min for 260 miles (80%) of range. Having a portable power station with charging speed of 5 to 7 kWh and having it charged up with solar is a good backup option. All EV manufacturers must align a standard on charging speed, all charging stations should be standardised for optimum charging speed. Availability and interoperability should be easy across charging stations and locations. It is evolving and sure in another 10 years things will be better. ICE took ages to improve.

For now or untill EVs have a real world range of atleast 450-500kms, EVs are for people who have disposable money to try new things. You need a house where you would have an 8kW connection if you're using the slow charger or even more if you want to install a fast charger which will affect the electricity bill of your house overall not just the EV charger.. or you have a solar panel installed which again not everyone could afford. Then you have another vehicle which you can use in emergency or you would use Ola or Uber in those case, also if you're travelling out of station because not everyone likes to take multiple hour long stops. Then you have run your car more than 30-40k per year in order to recover the extra cost..In that rare case EVs are a good option. For now you have to fit in a criteria to buy an EV and not the usual way round.

It’s stupid to compare mining costs of lithium and petrol. EVs don’t burn a battery full of lithium on every full charge. But a petrol car burns 1 full tank of petrol every time it is refueled. An EV doesn’t need a battery full on every recharge, it is only once during its manufacture/assembly.

Evs are the future but need to build ecosystem for it. For 15 years China put a total 230 billion dollers for it. And if compare from source to reusability evs are 6-8 times less polluting than ICE. Hydrogen have its own drawbacks like engine melting, prone to fire blast more risky than hybrids. So EVs will be the future, but need more research to get 6C charging, incremental improvement in efficiency, and safety. EVs have higher efficiency, convenience of multiple source or charging are its pros

Guys.. i agree few of points but really we cant built proper phone charging station in public transport asking for a full fledged EV infra in 2024 lets be realistic and the countries who tried to do it are already facing tons of issues. Increasing thermal efficiency by adding other additive in petrol or diesel by adding more equipment like adblue is more realistic approach. Yes sell EV who wants it but shoving down on everyone throat EVs is not best for a person who dont have a proper parking who has random travelling situation and sit for 40 min each time for charging and in a 1200km road journey i would be spending 3-4 hrs just for charging even more. Today if we indians convert to EV like they say then my 3 hrs would be just to spent just to stand in queue for charging my car .. good old demonetization day where we were hunting ATM for money like that we will be hunting for charging point. The place where we live outlet option is an issue i mean all those imp points we just slided out easily like nothing in discussion point. The people who implement these live in villa but not every one. Nature has to be saved but at destroying an entire ICE based business thats gona have other issues at door step. Thats all from a person who probably would be owning last gen of diesel vehicle who is ok to handle adblue regeneration and everything just because he saw people with EV and what they do in his society just for charging their vehicle

Sure it's all subsidies and 5-7 year warranties right now, because it's nascent and the companies want it to sound like a fabulous idea..but just like how you're talking about limited resources of oil and the prices going up, the EV market's gonna go though a shift, where it's going to be crazy expensive just to switch out a battery, once the EV segment reaches a 50% market share. So this mostly is what's good to keep one awake, an "EYE WASH!"

The biggest reason I am thinking to stop voting for BJP is push for EV by banning diesels. As long as pollution from the vehicle is under control, government has no business banning vehicles. If they ban I hope they lose elections !

Energy density of battery is the issue. To get 600km real world range, we may need to double or triple the car weight. Once this is solved, EVs will make sense. Also battery swap, solar generation etc will support the EV. At this stage, EV are a decade away from becoming main stream

Everyone should have EVs point but they should also have a petrol or diesel car as well. Evs can never replace ICE cars

No doubt EVs are efficient but when u consider efficient use of any energy, we should consider the electricity generated from the source(power station) till it reaches the EV through the electrical grid. And there the problem comes. No body can count the unlimited amount of electricity losses which comes on the middle of the grid. So there is no doubt EVs are just a gimmick and a product to fool the audience for the profit making by the oligarchs. Hybrids are the only way forward in INDIA. I support the Japanese thinking for sure. Customer will only regret after buying an EV and the regret keeps growing as the EV gets old year by year.
