Do I need a SAS, SATA or SSD Disk array for my needs and should it be eSATA, DAS-SAS or an IP NAS array?
These are great questions... In this video I talk to the type of disk, arrays, controllers and the protocols involved for each type of disk storage solution.
I talk to the value of disk types and sizes, also talk to the disk chassis and their roles in provide storage and lastly the true limits and bottlenecks of each.
Keep enjoying and the learning!

I'm about to try to squeeze two enterprise ~16TB u.2 nvme drives into my consumer PC. A bit lost at this point, but ordered several nvme adaptors from aliexpress. . .thanks for the tour. PS - have zero need for speed above normal SSDs, but totally disgusted by the price of consumer sata ssds and I found someone selling U.2 NVMe drives for much, much less. . .so, gotta try.

thanks Brad for explaining on this topic, i have query that we have ontap cluster in which we have disk array were we have SAS and SSD drives will that be a problem? but we have SSD disk were we have created separate aggregate pool and for sas disk we have created separate aggregate pool..

If your volumes are setup correctly then no. NetApp should have setup the disks in the array so there is not risk as long as when you build your volumes you only do the same class of drives in the volume aggregate. Never add SAT and SAS or SSD in the same aggregate.

Plus if you retire the DS2246 arrays just move them over to your HSM platform and use them for tiered storage function. Tha way you use the older disk space to hold cold data as needed.

Hi Brad, thanks for your video, I have a question, currently I have a customer using an sata ssd array for a datab ase and they are complaining about speeds, would sas ssd's increase performance compared to sata ssd's? Thank you

SATA is Serial based data handle ans SAS is dual path way so yes. It is faster by x2 so you could transfer the SSD disks and try that first. There are faster SSD drives but try that first.

hello again brad i was watching this video on the hard drives a good video, useful to me with my current project. ive looked at the back of the hard drives currently installed and unless im mistaken it looks like i could replace the sata drives for sas. but will their be any benefit to changing sata drives for sas due to the limitations of the onboard controller with the speeds of 3 gb on two drives and 6gb on the other two drives As i know sas can run at much higher speeds and have onboard memory upto 15,000 rpm Also do you have a limitation of 2 tb a drive using sas you also mentioned small 2.5 inch drives could be better now for the hp server im working on its possible to take out the current backplane board that connects 4 sata or sas drives and replace it with one that carries 8 x 2.5 inch drives but their apparently their is a limitation on amount of storage space you can maximise up to on this server if you go up to 4 x 4tb apparently the raid gets errors and crashes on sata so even if i only used 2tb for sas their could be a limitation of storage at least ive learnt why i cant use ssd's but some people still do install them into this server im not sure why though or what the benefit is

Well first thing is to make sure that you have a SATA/SAS controller on board in your server. Yes SAS drives can be plug up work on SATA cabling but msot common motherboards do not have a SATA / SAS controller on board so you can't see or use the SAS drives. Do you research first on your controller. As for the 3.5 vs. 2.5 drives. Look at your drive caddies to see if they have the mounting screws for both on the caddie. The 2.5 drive mounts will mount from the bottom of the caddie vs. the 3.5 drive mounts from the sides. If so you are good. Now for the last question ( I think...) the largest size of a SAS drive. First things first yes. SAS drives use dual channels for data reads and writes that can be done at the same time. SATA drive can onyl write or read but not both so SAS is faster. As or how big can you go on the SAS drive size? You cna go pretty bigger. 4/8/12TB drives are out there in the 3.5 inch format. As for the 2.5 inch SSD format drives you can get them up to 16TB in size if you want and should work on a SATA/SAS drive plane jsut find. BTW the if you have two 1GB connection on the chassis you cna run in ALB (adaptive Load balancing) mode for dual 1GB bandwidth so you can read and write at the same time on the LAN giving you a lot of stable transfer rates. Now for that to work you have to have another system that have 2 x 1GB NICs setup or a 10GB NIC connection to get the full transfer speeds but just a idea.. Most manage switches these days can support that ALB mode. You jsut have to do your research on the setup of the NICs to make it happen. Enjoy!

Brad, I just purchased 4 Seagate SAS Constellation ES.3 2GB drives and simply wanted to use them as External Storage but have not been able to get an answer on KZfaq as of yet. Could you tell me what I need to use these drives for external storage. I don't need RAID, I simply just want to backup some of my files without a big array... Is that possible?
@leadiususa7394
@leadiususa7394 Жыл бұрын
YEs you cna do a SAS HBA hook up (no RAID) and jsut use the disks as single drives. You will need a SAS controller I am sorry to say. Your motherboard SATA will not support SAS drives. But they are cheap. You can use your PC tower to hold the drives or you cna get a SAS/SAT 4 drive bay insert or external housing if yuou want but four drive should be able to fit in a PC tower if it is a mid size tower. But just in case here is a link to a 4 drive bay insert for you tro work with. www.ebay.com/itm/254757684093?hash=item3b50bdc37d:g:e9EAAOSwWzRfk2uL&amdata=enc%3AAQAHAAABADmKhQFhopg2epj%2Bfnl8Hq9wC%2BdzJVEl%2BlE6N9lK3Y0k%2BEtbYuo49oCWjssebZ7hMxLEUajWCqwC2VWRl0Lvnxy46vBFS3a9THFi%2B8Mwikc4l8retetCtY1SFlFY7wRK%2FBCCRAocucWj%2Bw6PQ%2Bz%2Bw1vuGrLW93d6HTjbg2qU13KTlruQTIsb37SGR8uqdtHGty2arclRBf2m9cfTxk9DzVuOrU%2Bpii7%2FSBQxqy7Ao7oxNHqHefoXMykffdhLi01nUXacknwwA6FtdUihvVNVut%2FAuw8Yll75%2FVcuUWUagYRFtmpjgRPGtJhmrKq1rr6E2hlylrvgWyH5TMlMuL8Za8M%3D%7Ctkp%3ABFBM7OW2hb9g As for the HBA controller, any low cost (around $35) LSI SAS/SATA HBA controller will work. (No frills) Just make sure you get the right nubmer of cable connection for the way you plan to connect up to the drives. Enjoy dude!

@leadiususa7394 I would use Linux Ubuntu as a headless server. I'd install a LEMP Stack server with NGINX as my main web server software, Mautic, as my main autoresponder (email newsletter software), & PHPMyAdmin to help manage my database for storing my contacts. I would also use Amazon SES as my main SMTP server for bypassing my ISP (if needed). So, I was asking if you think I'd somehow be able to build a good DAS server with RAID on top of it all.
