Sonic Frontiers is a 2022 platform game developed by Sonic Team and published by Sega. As Sonic the Hedgehog, the player explores the mysterious Starfall Islands to collect the Chaos Emeralds after Sonic and his friends are separated when falling through a wormhole. Frontiers integrates platforming and traditional Sonic elements-such as rings and grind rails-into the series' first open world, where the player solves puzzles and beats challenges to collect items and fight against robotic enemies and colossal Titans.
Development began after the release of Sonic Forces (2017). Sonic Team head Takashi Iizuka wanted Frontiers to set a new template for Sonic games to follow, similar to Sonic Adventure (1998). Sonic Team settled on an open-ended design and focused on adapting Sonic's abilities to an open world. Frontiers was released on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S on November 8, 2022. Sonic Frontiers received mixed reviews; critics praised the open world and story, but found the gameplay repetitive.

Sonic Boom, the cartoon, was actually really good for what it was. It was pretty funny and had that Saturday morning charm to it. If anything, that was the only good thing to come out of the Sonic Boom series.

Oh, god yes! Easily the third best thing to come out of the meta era alongside Colours and Generations. I particularly liked Knuckles' and Amy's characterisations in that show.

I think I remember the original top 10. If I'm not mistaken, Sonic R was number 1 on the list. And because of that I actually listened to the song that Craig was mocking so much...and I liked it.

Maaaaan, hatless Stuttering Craig is pretty much Naked Craig Craig o.0 But for me, Best Sonic game was Sonic 2. It was just the fulfillment of what 2D Sonic was aiming for. It was fun, the music was classic and playing 2 players was fun for me and my bro. Worst?.... Idk, i think Sonic lost me when it went 3D. Not cuz i'm against him going 3D but they just felt clumsy and limited. I think Sonic Frontiere is a step in the direction that made sense for Sonic. He has to be in an open world. And I'm surprised nobody talks about Shadow cocking an AK-47ish as if it were a shotgun. I'm not a gun guy AT ALL and I even noticed that every time.

Sonic Boom was a good cartoon. It had some great jokes. I do remember when this came out and I remember agreeing with this list 100%, at the time. Except, I have a soft spot for Shadow The Hedgehog. It is kind of a gaming guilty pleasure.

Sonic Boom was absolutely not a good cartoon and the jokes were dreadful. Though to be fair, when you have characters as bad as the ones written by big red button, there's not much you can do about it.

Classic Screwattack. Despite the hate Sonic gets, its still one of my favorite game franchises and i love many of the 3d sonic games. Nearly all reviews ive seen either love the new open zone system or hate it. Likewise, they also either hate or love the cyberspace levels. Sonic frontiers is a very polarizing game. Personally, I absolutely love Sonic Frontiers despite its technical flaws, of which there are really only 2, but theyre not game breaking like in Sonic 06. Its a nice new direction for future 3D sonic games and I believe a sequel to Frontiers will be even better.

Personally I found it to be pretty tedious to complete with a pretty bad story where all the characters acted like idiots especially Shadow on the "true villain" path where he remembers his past but still goes along with Black Doom's plan. If Sonic 06 didn't exist, it would be pretty easy to put Shadow The Hedgehog as the worst main series Sonic game.

The best review of this game came from the Greek Critique, who recognized that the progression system of Shadow the Hedgehog was basically an attempt to mimic Star Fox 64. But the big difference between the two games was Star Fox was fun to replay over and over, while Shadow was a tedious slog regardless of which path you chose. I’ve admittedly never played Shadow the Hedgehog, but boy, none of the footage I’ve seen of it makes me interested in ever playing it.

Sonic boom the cartoon is actually pretty entertaining for kids and adults. I watch it with my 5 year old a lot and find it pretty funny at times.

So I can say that while Rise of Lyric is still bad, the Sonic Boom portable title were actually some of the best titles I've played. Same for the Riders games that weren't Free Riders but that's because I think not one developer knew how to use the Kinect camera, see Star Wars Kinect as an example. Also, Sonic Boom the series was a sleeper hit series that most people passed over just on the name alone

Yes Shadow still exists, and I think they've run out of stuff to do with him. He sort of just pops up a couple times a year to be Discount Vegeta to Sonic's pseudo-Goku attitude

Sonic Frontiers is pretty good. Lots of exploration, can be a bit boring in the beginning, but it’s gets better as you progress along!

My problem with Shadow the hedgehog is that they have a character that has Chaos powers and is faster than a Bullet using guns and riding motorcycles, in Sonic Adventure 2 Shadow would consider these pathetic as he took on the military

That’s what I always said. The story is just fine, even the darkness and grittiness is just fine. But the guns and cursing and vehicles just ruin it. If it was Shadow by himself without all the “hmmm what do Americans think is *cool*” overblow by Japan, it would have been just fine. They watched WAYYYY too many Arnold Schwarzenegger movies to try to make this game “badass”.

Shadow the Hergeheg will never not be my favorite Sonic game and I feel people don't give it enough credit because le guns and le evil. It has a very fun rhythm to it when you master the controls, and each level having more than one mission makes for some neat variety (most of the time). The worst Sonic game, likewise, will never not be Sonic 2 on the Sega Master System. If I wanted to buy deaths, Sonic 2 (SMS) is the Wal-Mart. People tend to sleep on it, but maybe that's a good thing. Anyways fun video to reminisce on. I don't usually watch reaction videos but this was a trip down memory lane.

I like the idea that no one still understands how we got Shadow the hedgehog, Sega was getting letters asking for a new game with Shadow in it or him be the main character then at some point later Sega made a poll where you could vote on what type of game and what character you could play as and naturally shadow won that And I'm glad as per usual when it comes to shadow there isn't any real arguments for why it's bad all was said was "it looks dumb" and despite not saying it there are no real answers for why it's "edgy" either

Shadow the Hedgehog is a black sheep indeed, with a few streaks of red. Some people like it, some find it a guilty pleasure. I enjoy some of it, despite the grind and load times and even beat the hard mode. I'm just that badass.

The first trilogy on the Mega Drive are all time classics and the 1st is my favorite. Green Hill Zone is not the best start in terms of gameplay, but the next levels bring some of the best platform mechanics of that era.

My favorite game would have otherwise been the Adventure games. But I've grown such a softspot for Unleashed that it just might be my favorite nowadays. Forces is easily the worst Sonic experience I've ever had, even after finally trying Sonic 06 a few years later. Frontiers is really janky and broken-feeling, the most jank Sonic has been since 06. But it was the most I've enjoyed Sonic in nearly a decade, and the DLC easily the most satisfying challenge I've gotten from the series since Unleashed.

I actually did appreciate the Sonic Riders games, especially the second one on Wii. But Free Riders did look like it had awful controls. In this list, I'd say 06 was worse than Sonic Boom. I'd also throw Sonic Chronicles on here. It just felt soulless and lacked the heart that Mario RPG did.

I've been a fan of the blue hedgehog for a very long time. I don't think that I ever played Shadow the hedgehog because it just didn't appeal to me. There's even some debate on weather or not it's considered a "main line game". Some people like it, and other people really hate it. I'm somewhere in the middle I guess... Not a broken mess, but it just wasn't what sonic fans were wanting, so I didn't stick with a lot of the audience.

For correct for few you've said from while back. As ive grew old as ive use to liked your Top Ten videos. For Sonic Shuffle, it maybe a Mario Part Ripoff, but did you know it was a same studio who've made previous Mario Party Titles before? Kinda like a ripoff game but with a same crew? Not surw how you call it? But yeah...it happens. For Shadow the Hedgehog, It Was meant to be retold a story the events of Sonic Adventure 2 and Heroes as reckoned the plot. For Sonic and the Black Knight, it wasn't that bad as many people told. But it did indeed had a good Soundtrack. And even it's messaging by the end of the game when the story wraps up. Kinda powerful one in fact. And for last is Sonic Boom. I'm pretty sure anyone comments about the cartoon more than actual game itself. So I'll let it slide for now. So yeah Craig. That's my words. Actually, really funny story about the Riders franchise. At the time of its release, was right there with you, did not understand the appeal of the game at all, felt confusing to control, was not jiving with it. Fast forward a decade, and apparently, an entire competitive community has cropped up around the first two Riders games, to the point where they actually made some large-scale mods to make the game more competitive and add brand-new content. And it actually looks fun! Never managed to have that large a reversal of opinion on something like that before. Free Riders in particular is still a massive dumpster fire though, so the list is still accurate. 👌

Back in the day, a friend of mine brought his PS2 over and I gave Shadow the Hedgehog a shot. My memory is vague at that point, I only remember a few details. I struggled to pick up a gun because of the slippery controls. The basic attacks you perform from pressing the square button were useless. When I tried Chaos blast for the first time, I overestimated it’s range and missed everything. I constantly yearned for the Hero gauge to fill so I could skip through the level. I got an E rank on the first level. My friend really hated the Hero mission in the second level. 60 aliens was just too much. In the end I rage quit because I kept falling to my death in a platforming section that shouldn’t have been that hard. Again, slippery controls. In the years since, I’ve seen playthroughs and reviews of the game and I have to agree. The game is outrageously bad.

To your point about game preservation for Wii games, Nintendo at least was smart to make the joy-cons have motion sensors so as to make the option for using motion controls available, & we've seen ports of Mario Galaxy & Zelda: Skyward Sword on there so I do think, assuming Nintendo starts to try to dig into their Wii library that we'll see those games come back in some form over time, it's just a question of when & how. Really hoping for Metroid Prime 3 getting ported at some point.

Nothing can convince me that anything but Sonic Free Riders is the worst Sonic game, with the closest being Sonic And The Secret Rings sheerly on how literally painful those games are to play.

I NEVER understood the whole concept with Sonic and....chili dogs. I think that was introduced in the cartoon series that aired on Saturday mornings way back when I believe, but it was never in the games. Am I missing something here?

In the 90s, Sonic's canon was completely different between the West and Japan. When they added extensive voice acting in Sonic Adventure they couldn't do that anymore, so their solution was to use the Japanese canon but with some concessions to the Western one such as Eggman being a nickname and his real last name being "Robotnik," and Sonic's favorite food being chili dogs. But Black Knight was the first time chili dogs had been shown in the games.

Only ones I majorly disagree with are Fighters (every fighting game is like how you describe Sonic the Fighters if you don't know how to play it well, it's more egregious in Fighters due to the autocombo system but that's something that more and more fighting games have adopted recently) and Black Knight (not really good but not top ten worst, plays better than Secret Rings and has one of the series' best storylines.) I also disagree that Sonic Riders is bad (it has a steep learning curve which isn't what most people want out of mascot racers but it's fun when you learn it) but believe me: people who like Sonic Riders hate Free Riders *more* because it killed a unique racing spinoff that fit Sonic so much better in favor of a great, but derivative Mario Kart clone.

Sonic Boom is a meme game because the skips make it way short and possible to have some fun with it. Key words being some fun.

Thanks! So I'm a sonic superfan and I disagree with a few of the entries, I really like Sonic R, great music and fun tracks with multiple tracks but the big thing people don't get is it controls like a car racer not a platformer, and that's why I play it on PC with a Steering wheel. Sonic The Fighter while not a great game is also not a bad game, also while I agree about sonic free riders, I do really enjoy the first 2 Riders games. As for what bad games I would add I would say Sonic Forces is a recent bad game much like Sonic 4 it's not awful it was just over hyped to be a game that was less polished than sonic colors on Wii. Likewise team sonic racing was a very disappointing Kart racer fallow up to Transformed that was a true Mario Kart competitor, Sonic 2 Game Gear/Master System 8 bit is dreadfully difficult from the first boss it's a race to see if you rage quite or your 6 AAA batteries go dead first. Sonic Chronicles was a sonic RPG that because of a lawsuit the developer rushed out to be done with it.

Sonic Boom Fire and Ice on 3DS was the food Sonic Boom game and yeah the cartoon had some success.

Actually Shadow The Hedgehog is alright.. I actually like Shadow without the gun of course.. Looks like Shadow has a M-16 3 rounds burst.. *"Treat every gun like it's loaded! I don't care if you think it's not"* Great Advance Craig! 👍🏿❤️

Thanks! On a other note I think you would really like Sonic Boom, Think Seinfeld or Friends but with sonic cast, they defeat Eggmans attacks but that's almost backseat to what's going on in their lives, with commentary on feminism, cancel culture, news, government and PC culture

i was never a big fan of sonic.. i just don't get the concept of precision platforming at high speeds when the camera is so close to him, it's not like you can react. usually things are just 'happening' but he is a very smart marketing gimmick for the mega drive, showing of the one area where the mega drive might be more powerful than the snes.. speed (i think) but my favourite is sonic 2 i guess, i liked the music... mania was pretty good too..

Don't hate me for this but shadow the hedgehog it's a guilty pleasure for me. I actually like this game from the story, gameplay, and the main villain black doom aka the devil of the sonic universe and fun fact: did you know that black doom is voice by Sean Schemmel the voice of goku...yeah I know shocking. anyways that my thoughts in a short way.

My wife doesn't like video games, cartoons or syfy, so when we were dating I needed her to understand what she was getting into with me so I whent on a road trip and put the Sonic R soundtrack on

A lot of the games on this list aren't actually bad, and the ones that are *glares at 06 and 3D Blast* have either great fan communities or charismatic and outgoing former Sega programmers doing their best to salvage what few good aspects their games have

Favorite Sonic Game? Sonic 3 Worst Sonic Game IMO? The GameCom version of Sonic Jam. As for Sonic R, lemme just say this. It depends on which version. The Saturn version is trash. The PC Version had a little more development time and isn't terrible once you get used to the controls. The PC version was the version included in Sonic Gems collection for the GameCube also, so if you played that one congrats, you played the better version.

I've played a ton of Sonic games in my day, and I can't get into them. To me, they're style over substance and style alone cannot make a game great. I may never understand the hype behind the series, cause I've tried, yet I'll probably just be brushed off as someone the games aren't made for. Well, by that you mean is Sonic is not for people who love solid gameplay, 3 dimensional characters, and actually well written stories, then sure Sonic games are not for us ;)

Sonic R definitely has some great music, even if the game itself is...well y'know. If I were to rearrange this list in any way, I would swap Sonic R and Sonic Shuffle. Sonic Shuffle really is that miserable of a party game.
