Do My Watercolor Brushes Need To Be Expensive?

Other artists ask me a lot about if their tools and materials need to be expensive, and my answer is always, "No! Not always--it depends." Especially if you're just starting out with something--experimenting is crucial. Here is my hard and fast rule for myself about the initial experimenting stage: protect your headspace and bring down any stress about it. Using inexpensive but quality products and tools is not only acceptable, but desirable. In some cases, I continue to use those products indefinitely.
This is my favorable review of the Artify 9 pc. Floral Brush Set. Here is my Amazon affiliate link if you'd like to check them out: amzn.to/4aXBQxW
I found these brushes to be really good and varied, organized in a case well with a lot of help understanding the kinds of brushes included, and they delivered color and water really well too. The only thing I can't speak to is longevity of them because I haven't used them long at all, but they will definitely stay in my regular lineup of go-to brushes.
The botanical collage papers I'm painting here are for my Layered Botanical collage process. If you'd like to check out the Layered Botanical class, go here for info: marabethquinart.thinkific.com...

I just ordered the brushes, not that I need more, but I think these would be great for travel! Thank you for sharing your review❤

They really are-I just took them on a trip and after adding in a small flat brush, I had everything I needed.

Why water color and not diluted acrylic?

I’m not sure if you’re asking in reference to brush quality or to painting collage papers, but I’ll assume the latter. I use both acrylic and watercolor because they have very different qualities about them. Especially when paired with certain kinds of paper-for instance, watercolor on really absorbent paper like teabag paper allows the pigments to flow and then abruptly stop to create those fabulous marks and demarcations that watercolors are so known for. Acrylics don’t leave quite the same marks. Did that answer your question, Deb?
