Interesting how Majorca’s Mask had such a short and demanding development cycle whereas Tears of the Kingdom, arguably a partial nod to that game, has gotten delayed a couple times. Perhaps this is them learning from the past.

I can see now why people didn't like the majora 3ds remake, especially the change to Zora swimming bc i heard from a lot of people didn't like how limiting it became in the remake and how you can only place ice on specific parts on the water, if i had played the the original i would have thought the same tbh.

True gamers don't need fancy graphics or high fps to enjoy a quality game like the n64 series, just needs to know what the devs had to work with to appreciate a game.

The Render96 project is one of the best ever Nintendo 64 remakes ever made, and the crazy thing is that it's made by fans. It takes the original Mario 64 and changes the graphics to match the original 1996 3D renders found in the promotional material, hence the name "Render96." It has a plethora of options for fine tuning the game, support for multiplayer, and you can play multiple different character all with unique aspects to how they play. It even adds crazy stuff like ray tracing and support for running 240fps assuming you have the hardware to support that kind of stuff. It is without question better in every way compared to the original N64 version. The only thing it's missing is Mario 64 DS' content.

Well, the cancelled goldeneye 007 and the port of Mario 64 for PC are the proof that classics can be beautifully improved.

The new additions in Mario 64DS didn't make up for the dogshit controls. It's not just the lack of analog stick and the limitation of the 8 axis movement, it also lacks momentum, the levels are not even the same size as the original, the cameras are even worse and many other changes make the remake waaaay inferior to the original.

People keep saying that N64 games like Mario 64 and Goldeneye haven't aged well but I don't understand why. Other then the graphics and sometimes the camera especially in Mario 64 it hasn't really made me think these games have aged poorly if anything I enjoy these games more than a majority of the games that are released nowadays.

Maybe it’s because I grew up during the generation where 3D games were fully realized by developers and knew how to make them, but I think most of these games have aged very poorly. The controls sure can be figured out and if I took enough time I can play it but the controls without a second stick is just unbearable imo. If Nintendo just added/fixed a few features with the 64 games on the switch I wouldn’t mind but to not even add a fixed control scheme for 3D all stars version is pathetic.

@@ssg-eggunner It astonishes me that people who grew up with the game can’t see through that fact. They tell younger generations to get used to it as if any game from the last 20 years has controlled like that.

AFAIK, 3DS mode in Star Fox 64 3D is basically easy mode. N64 mode keeps the challenge the same as the N64 original.

When a game is being remade or remastered, I'd say it's better to make changes that makes it the best version it can be rather than adhere to some loose notion of faithfulness. Because even a change that's objectively seen as good like making the iron boots easier to equip or improving on the visuals is changing the feel of the original game. The changes made to saving, the Bomber's notebook and slowing down time in Majora's Mask makes the game more enjoyable to complete and do the side quests. Fans of the original can always play the N64 version if they want on the Virtual Console and NSO. Nintendo isn't a company that views the new versions as being a replacement for the original game, but rather a new and different way to play it.

Do I think that N64 games need remakes? No, I don't think that any of these need them. I still do think that these games should be playable on Nintendo's modern systems. It's no secret that retro gaming is becoming more expensive hobby as the years go by. There are many who would rather buy a new shiny game, then risk having that cartridge they bought off of ebay to be fake. We all know it is not hard for Nintendo to throw an old rom onto the eshop, which is what they should be doing in my opinion. Sadly Nintendo hates free money, and instead drip feeds fans content. While NSO had made some of these games playable, but when they take the online down, that's it. At the same time I heavily appreciate remakes being done for modern systems. It gives the chance for games to grab a new audience, makes it more accessible for many people, and physical copies are something I would always like. Did we need a remake of games like Skyward Sword, or Kirby Return to Dreamland? No. Do I think that they are still good releases of great games that newer fans can now play? Yes. So yes I think that these games should get another chance. I personally adore the N64 Zelda remakes, and prefer the DS port of Mario 64, but I also grew up with those remakes as a kid so maybe it's partially due nostalgia. I think some titles on the 64 have aged a bit poorly. Things like Pokemon Stadium for example was a thing of it's time. Still, I find remakes and rereleases to be important. Even if the games that they choose have aged poorly, or are not perfect.

It’s so interesting hearing about the Conker multiplayer, considering it was half the name. I’m guessing they were really banking on the Live (xbox live) and Uncut (uncensored port) name, that when they were told they couldn’t make the remake as explicit, they just kinda chickened out on that side of the marketing

Personally I'm one who'd rather just see a new game then a remake. As a person who's a huuuuuge retro game enthusiast, trying to remake classics just always ends in a rough way that doesn't capture the same feel even if it's technically "better" It just becomes tug and war of "we can fix things" vs "we can't change too much" And it just makes me wish the team made something new I adore old games so really if you change the feel, what's the point for me? Also huge coward old games all slap 👁👁

Majora could of been better if the time wasn't so unfair (yes even with the slowed down version of the song) like I would appreciate time just stopping like in the clock tower in been applied to the dungeon's.

As someone who was born during the change of early 3D games to fully developed ones, it’s clear that these games controls are completely outdated. 1 stick for a full fledge 3D game doesn’t cut it and to tell your fan base to get used to it is just dumb and a bad business model. Sadly die hard Nintendo fans will claim that nintendo is trying to “preserve” these games instead of realizing that they are straight up lazy and know they’ll buy it anyways.

I wish we got remakes of the n64 stuff for the regular ds, like Mario 64 ds. It seemed just right. When it came for the 3ds it wasn't all that impressive, being that it had games at ps2/ps3 level.

You fell flat on the mario 64 ds part. That game isn't as great at all for one it doesn't have the iconic blj which is a huge part of the mario 64 community. Also the controls just suck bad the dpad is just dreadful to play on. And last the graphics just aren't it they don't hit the same and look just whatever.
