I adore this game too. Maybe it's just because I don't follow the whole 'they changed it, now it sucks' mentality. The game is still a lot of fun, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't want a new title at least similar to the first two. If they at least brought back EXP, I'd be fully satisfied.

If you beat the Pit of 100 Trials, you can unlock Dashell, who can give you the ability to run just like in a classic Mario game. However, I will say that it is a bit of a stupid idea to UNLOCK a special pixl when it should have just been unlocked from the beginning

I kinda disagree with the partners bit because I loved playing Bowser, Peach, and Luigi.

You make a great point, Super was my first PM game too and I loved it to DEATH when I first played it! But man it is such a travesty that we never got a sequel to it and instead got raked over the coals with sticker star and color splash. Like you say, imagine if they had rebuilt a SPM sequel to be a decent platformer with another bang-on story and creative theming. That could’ve been a phenomenal game!!

OOO ive been waiting for this one!!!!! this is definitely my favorite out of the series, im a story guy so the story was a million chef kisses and kept me going. and i don't sneeze at the gameplay, HOWEVER if it was in the style of ttyd it would be the Perfect Game for me. compelling story, strategic gameplay, mwah. beautiful. when i replayed the first three over the summer this one was half the time it took to beat ttyd and it's such a SHAME!! 15:36 vs 30:51. even with all the filler (another example...the overthere stair...) it is still short as hell all mushed together and im sad. but the mush, for me, still creates a very off color, but still a color i enjoy looking at, heart of mush. i also love how you had to use up 7 pieces of perfectly crisp paper and however much ink for that peach + bowser 4 ever bit. incredibly worth it. should do a giveaway for them, i'll take the most crinkled one. can't let them go to waste jak!!!!!!

This was my second PM, after TTYD. However, I didn't know at the time that TTYD's gameplay wasn't new to it, so after playing TTYD and seeing SPM, I just figured Paper Mario was defined by its art style and focus on story, with different gameplay each game. But even now that I've played the first game, and (unfortunately) the fourth and fifth games, I still think overall SPM was my favorite. The story was my favorite part of TTYD, and in my book SPM took that aspect up to eleven and made it even more epic. I'd much rather have SPM than say, a game that traditionally plays like TTYD but has the story and character variety of Sticker Star.

The problem is that the turning point is so late Because it starts at chapter 6, which only has 2 chapters, the second being when the world disappears, and after that there's just one chapter before the final area. That's...way too late, it should have happened at world 4 or 5, not 6, and they should have let you explore it more because sammy Kingdom is a terrible world and it honestly didn't make me feel anything because it was just rooms with doors

Nice video! I actually played the Paper Mario games in order and still ended up liking this one the most. I think the big thing is that I was a little tired of the Mario RPG formula from Super Mario RPG to TTYD. Even if the execution wasn't perfect, I do like the novelty of this game quite a bit. Not only from the different approach to the story and characters, but also the 2D to 3D switching mechanic. Unfortunately I haven't touched much of the series after this. Got about halfway through Sticker Star, but ended up getting distracted and never returning to it.

First video i've watched on this channel in awhile, and this was my first paper mario game too! Sadly the games I played after were sticker star and color splash but I got to PM64 (only got to the prologue of shy guy's toybox) and TTYD (im like on the chapter before the last chapter) this was a great video! Edit: and this is still personally my favorite game, now i've never beat it I only got to the first part of the space section, but I adore the story, the main story is way better than the other games even though games like TTYD and PM64 had lots of more smaller details that made it feel like a world.

I found this video through a recommended video as I played through this game recently. While it's not the golden gems that 64 and TTYD were, it's a good game for what it has to offer. The developers tried something new and I can appreciate that, if it ain't broke, don't "fix it". But don't even get me started on where they took the series into Sticker Star onward. I play videogames for story and gameplay, I've always been a guy that fell in love with captivating stories, and Super Paper Mario hits me at home with its story. If you got a game that has a fair difficulty (not too easy and not too hard), a really good story, or very great controls, I'm usually sold. Anyway, nice video, keep up the good work.

I gotta disagree on the engine part tho The actual platforming is really good, and so are puzzles, its just that it's directionless

I have such a shallow and terrible reason for not liking this game...I just think it's really ugly. I genuinely hate the blocky faux-pixel designed characters that take up so much of the game and even when I'm sucked into the story or trying to enjoy the gameplay for what it does, I'm just like "Wow...I do not like looking at this."

This was also my first paper mario and I still really like it but i can see now that the earlier games were definitely better, still think it did some really cool things with what it had though, also make sure not to be too harsh looking at sticker star, there are some actual cool things in there that get completely overlooked

3:57 my only nitpick of the game. I hate how the Koopa Troopas and Paratroopas in Bowser’s army look generic compared to how impressive they were in previous entries. I.e. wearing the studs (red shelled with shades, neck rings, and wrist bands) along with Koopatrols, granted they also appeared in the game but not in cutscenes. Scratch that, I have a second nitpick at 4:43 why is there a regular Magikoopa (who is presumably Kamek) standing next to Bowser by his throne but not Kammy Koopa from the first two games?? Talk about continuity issues!

The intro is like TTYD's, but done even better. Maybe the narration sequence is better in TTYD, but the cutscene one of this one is the superior one. The story might be slow at the start, but it becomes the best one in the series in the second part, when you start making the connections. That's similar to TTYD, but way more intense and more focused on the narrative than exploring. I also agree about the stretching both the main story and the single chapter's ones across too many segments, which happens because of the level and chapter structure. The filler parts can also be pretty bad when you play for the first time, because you can get really confused about how to progress, much more than in previous Paper Mario titles. Seeing the actual destruction is a high point, rarely you see real consequences in this game, it's trying to prevent disaster before it hits, while here you have to face some losses among the way. The 3D mechanic is a cool mechanic, the problem is that it's held back by some level design choices and controls, too. Level-Ups are nice, but the lack of choice is bad. Items are only useful in the pits, and even there, since they're limited, you take with you mostly health items. Level design is questionable in various occasion, but the worst things are the controls and physics, for sure. I think a hybrid of platforming and RPG could still work, but by having more distinct phases, not the bland mix we've got in this game. The partners have some cool abilities and personalities, but not having them interact with Mario and co. or play a role during the story makes them forgettable. Mario, Peach, Bowser, Luigi are still good in my opinion, I like their interactions, but in gameplay terms, not being able to flip as the others kills them outside of required moments and some bosses, sadly. This game is a mixed bag, it has some extremely good story, narrative, dialogue, but is held back by design choices on the gameplay aspect. It's a good introduction to Paper Mario for sure, certainly better than the next one, which lacks in all aspects compared to the better games in the series, at least this one shows how a compelling story, well-written characters, world building there can be with the Mario cast, which is one of the things that people really like about this series.

It was my first Paper Mario game and honestly still my favorite. But I do think a large part of that is spite. A lot of people praise TTYD to death so when you go in with such expectations, it's hard to compare to them and you end up inevitably disappointed, which is what happened with me with SPM. The fact that a lot of people only started liking SPM after Sticker Star came out and the attitude towards it from fans who had the opportunity to play earlier games first pretty much permanently soured me a bit towards liking the earlier games as much as I did this one and it's kinda a shame. I'd like to think I would've had more positive feelings towards them had I gotten to experience PM64 and TTYD in a bubble where the internet didn't exist. (Still wouldn't stop me from loving SPM though. That story is top notch and second to none.)

I used to LOVE this game, but I was on a lot of pain killers at the time. Years later, I sobered up, started up the Wii, and I slowly began to realize how much dialogue this freaking game has. Now, I love a game with a good storyline. But this game had more story than actual gameplay. This game had so much potential, but it was wasted on stretching out the story.

More so worst of the best. The drop in quality between SPM and SS hits ten times harder than the drop in quality between TTYD and SPM. That being said, love this vid, man! Super was my first too.

Tbh this my favorite paper mario game. I liked thousand year door, but in my opinion it wasn't as good Super paper mario. My dad taught me and my sister how to play before he died, so this game brings up a lot of good memories.😁

Good overview of Super Paper Mario! I also enjoyed the game myself when I got it, and the story is definitely a standout. I do have to agree that some of the levels felt like filler. I also wasn't really a fan of some of the character designs, like the Cragnons, or some of the people who live in Flipside/Flopside. I know the game takes place in a different dimension and all, but those NPCs and enemies feel so out-of-place and un-Mario like to me, which may have been the point and all. (And I know, Odyssey had the out-of-place realistic humans, I wish they stuck to the Mario Golf/Tennis-looking humans from one of their concept drawings) That doesn't count for Count Bleck and his minions, though. They felt like they fit in the Mario universe. Also, the Pixls as partners... yeah, if I were to make a Paper Mario Partner Tier List, all of them except Tippi - and maybe Tiptron - would be on the bottom. At least Kersti, Huey, Olivia, and the other partners in Origami King react to situations and have things to say instead of going completely silent upon their introduction. Kind of amused that the one Mario RPG game that could've done away with some of the RPG elements is Super, though. I also forgot the items were even a thing. Well, except for the healing ones, anyway. Anyway, good luck with Sticker Star. I had more fun drawing scenarios on Miiverse than playing it. Color Splash is a little better, and Origami King is pretty fun.

the game would be so much better structured without the 1-1 chapter system and i do feel the Flipping mechanic was underutilized it had so much potential, but oh well I dont think the game needs partners, the story is full enough maybe if this game had a more traditional rpg gameplay, yeah, add those suckers in, but as is now, i prefer the pixils they are much easier to just switch to I think all chapters are great, just 4 and 5 could use some tweaking to make them flow better, and yeah this game is still really great nowadays 7/10
