A neat aircraft mechanic trick for hard to reach bolts, screws etc. Use a piece of vacuum hose over the head to start the screw. Works for spark plugs also

I used this trick for reinstallation when I did my plugs a couple months back. It's great because unlike a socket and extension you can't accidentally crossthread the plug, if it's not aligned right it'll just slip in the tubing.

I drove an E34 BMW V8 for years and did a lot of DiY work on it. The engine is extremely sensitive to vacuum leaks, and a total intake manifold gasket replacement job is pretty much a given at 150K. The PCV plate at the back of the manifold is usually done by then as well.

I have an 840ci with the m60 and tbh it's super easy to work on. You are right about the sensitivity to vacuum leaks. It def is better than working on newer bmws lol

Check the idle control valve (located right above the throttle body,) sometimes it gets gummed up and stuck open, and a little shot of brake cleaner in it should free it up, a quick test would be rotate the unit back and forth and side to side you should hear a little throttle door flapping away.

Also installing it you should remove the rubber things and attach those first , slide IAC in rotated 90 degrees then rotate 90 and push it into the manifold. No need to stab yourself and you will have a proper seal without using silicone

Its always a good thing to reseal the entire intake (tb gasket, intake gaskets and replace crankcase valve , possibly the crankcase tube o-rings under the intake.

Tape repair for DIAGNOSTIC REASONS is absolutely acceptable, in this application. I am in no way shape or form an actual mechanic, but I am (and most are) snart enough to understand what your putting down. You're definitely NOT a hypocrite. A damn good mechanic that I wish I could bring my truck to!!!!❤🍻

This is when an honest mechanic is worth just staying with when you find them. He could easily have said oh needs intake gaskets and a whole other list of work. I do all my own work but I have one other mechanic I use when I just don't feel like doing a repair. Been using the same person for 15 years won't go anywhere else.

Knipex Cobra pliers are really good for dealing with those stripped fasteners. I haven't found any reverse "turbo" sockets for putting them back in yet.

Loved the trolling by Lauren. It was right on point. I remember you saying you couldn't find a proper hand wash to remove oil. Try this: get some saw dust ( check it doesn't have wood splinters), start soaping your hands and add some saw dust. Most of the oil and grease will come out ( use some soft bristles brush for the fingers and under the nails). You'll be happy with the results. Happy belated Birthday. Have yourself a great day.

Get some Permatex water based valve grinding compound. You can put some on your screwdriver, torx, sockets, etc. The carbide grit will increase grip 1000% as long as it’s not completely stripped.

So weird to see the steering wheel on that side of that car. No experience of the V8, but I have lots of experience of the straight sixes in 2.0 small and large block, 2.5 and 2.8 form. That interior looks so familiar, but backwards. In my opinion, the E34 was the peak of the 5 series development and it’s been all downhill ever since.

Check your throtle cable too tight,and those nickle silicone blocks were notorious for rough idle due to pitted cylinder walls but over all a good presentation ⁰...love the claw hammer from a retired BMW tech of 38 years

good ol E34 absolute classic and dirt cheap in america but expensive af in the UK, very common failure on these engines and the 6 cylinder engine is the intake tubes tend to crack in the flexy bendy part happens all the time and people never ever check it, happens on the E46's aswell SUPER common.

@@pprey6599 yeah prices keep going up and people keep parting/breaking them for profits so you just can't find any of them anymore, you see so many of these classics that are MINT just parked for awhile and people pull them apart, my brother owns a 520i which has some serious ECU/EWS issues atm and my dads owned more E28's and E24's than i've been alive and im 25 now so that's alot of cars haha.

I broke the resonator chamber/elbow on my 96 Jag XJ6L. I tried to glue it back, I broke it again. I looked online and eBay sellers wanted $150. I went to my local Import Yard and picked up the MAF and intake duct for $75. In the meantime a used electrical tape and super glue to seal the whole in the intake. It worked! I drove it that way for about a week before I fixed it. So Ray is right, it will work in the short term but it's worth fixing it the rightway especially if you got a salvage yard nearby.

Happy birthday. Part 2 should be a very good video. Doing tape and woodscrew repairs on one's own German designed vehicle is the morally correct thing to do. I mean torx, did anyone ask for a fastener where they all look the same but use one size off and it's destroyed, someone held up a 5.5mm socket and someone said hold my beer.

I have a 2006 BMW 535d straight 6 3 litre Twin Turbo mperformance stage 1 Ecu map, egr removed Dpf removed whirl flaps removed Cat removed 330 Bhp Running 650 tourqe Will go off the clock 160+ mph Refurbished the turbos, upgraded the brakes to drilled and grooved discs Red Stuff with ceramic brake pads straight pipe from engine to 1 back box. Diesels are the best for that tourqe. Throw that air in mix it with diesel Diesels are now going faster than the alcohol engines in Drag Racing .. Cheers Ray. I did the electrical tape thing on an '86 Mustang SVO's intake corrugation. The 'inside'(?) part of the corrugation had a split for no real reason I could determine because otherwise the part was just fine and flexible. So I taped up that corrugation across the split, over the humps, and multiple layers. Ran it like that for... what... 3 years I guess. Never an issue, then the car was traded in later on. Never heard about it again, but I like to think in THAT case... it's permanent and good. But don't do that at home, kids, it's Not Right(tm).

I just wanted to add some input you can get some Flex Seal tape on inside of the hole then use some liquid rubber in the can to seal the outer let dry add little more if necessary and it will be good ass new. good show and happy birthday

Ray, have you tried the propane trick for diagnosis of an intake leak? The same trick works with wd40 or other flammable sprays. If while idling you point the hose from a propane source or spray around the intake and if the idle goes up you found a leak.

The better version is using brake clean because you can't really put a torch in many intake runner areas especially on the V engines

@@ScrewedEquilibrium Not lit, the propane gas alone. THe mechanic that located my intake leak had a very long fine tip to get into very tight places worked great.

Gotta love it !! This is why I watch so many of Rainman Ray's videos. Ray : Let's find the right size plug to fit these holes........There, that's one... Also Ray : After killing mosquito and searching, trying every size left in vain, Grabs the bag the plugs came in - SHOVES BAG IN HOLE.....There, that's the other one. And As A Special Bonus: Wife Unit eradicates Rainman with a haunting sound from the distant past. Sending our hero into a blinding rage, running for the hills in a futile attempt to maintain his sanity !!
