I'm very happy you made this video because there is a lot of misinformation in the Music community on KZfaq. Most people giving advice do not understand the mechanics and fundamentals on the gear or software they're making videos about. What I'm noticing is a "monkey see, monkey do" trend online. Basically, KZfaqrs run out of material to cover so they monitor the channels of the real Pro's and then try to redo the same topic only without the understanding. I have been studying Mixing and Mastering since I was 16 and invested a lot of money into education and gear. However, I still consider Myself a Lifelong Student which is why I come online to stay up to date, but out of thousands of channels I have come across possibly 20 Mixing Engineers that understand Mixing and possibly 5 Engineeers who understand Mastering, this being one of them. The rest of channels I come across have been frauds and copycats spreading bad advice to the effect their advice is being massively adopted because it's more of them then the former. Keep up the good work! 💪🏾

Thank you for this. I get so tired of people saying their focusrite or uad interfaces are just as good as high end converters. Clipping converters is really only something a serious professional should do. I've never done it, although I'm not a mastering engineer. I got sick of arguing with my friend about how clipping his mixes into a 2 track Hifi cassette recorder (back in the early 2000's) sounded awful, but he's heard somewhere you want to push your mix into tape .. and this was his version of doing it, he told me I don't know shit .. I was like ok bro you carry on xD. I've had similar arguments on YT about why the Virus TI sounded so gritty in ed rush and optical tunes back in the 90's, and people thinking it was because of them pushing the convertors on the way out (it was a digital synth with analogue out), I was like Ed rush and optical aren't getting their grit through the DA in their virus TI smh ... they run it through a analogue Mackie desk (as well as a ton of other actual effects), overdriving the channel by a few db each time, like 5 times in a row, with a bunch of stuff going on in-between each time like different filter sweeps ect. I asked them had they ever heard what a DA sounds like when it's clipping on it's own? ... they never replied lol.

Good info. At 7:00 you say "its not that simple", which is the key comment. Its not just about cheap converters, its about the right converter for the job at hand. I have the Dangerous AD+. The great thing about that converter is that it clips very transparently. You can add almost 3db above ceiling and the signal remains nearly the same. This is very different from the Lavry, which when clipped adds a distortion profile that flatters the sound beautifully. Again, its not just high end. Lynx Hilo is among the most transparent converters you'll find. I have one. But I NEVER clip the AD. It farts something horrible when clipped. The API A2D, which is underrated, has the API 2520 opamps in it so it distorts nicely as well. Burl B2 bomber AD is another one that does something cool when you push into it hard. Again, which is different from the Dangerous because it really doesn't add to the sound when you clip it a couple of db. Its very very transparent and the audio doesn't fold in when you clip it. So its really about what you want to do when you go out and back into the box. As they say, horses for courses. What's awesome are all the amazing options we have now!!

I use an old M-Audio firewire 410 or something card. My studio is hardware based around an old Mac G4 for sequencing and simple audio recording. All modules, synths, drum machines go to a Behringer MX2642 mixer and then I record two stereo tracks. If I go in too hot, the card DOES NOT clip. It does something way worse - the sound breaks and I hear pops like electric discharge (think like a typical gas cigarette lighter with an electric starter). Thank God for that! The sound cards I used to have, like the ESI WaMi 24 had soft clipping on the converters so I could go in pretty hot. Sometimes it sounded ok, but usually... The advice these copycats are giving is just terrible. Thank you for clearing that up.

Is what your saying and doing translate to money and or advancement in the music industry (as in to say does it make money for you and the client and does it get accolades)? Id like to end with one thing. My first Grammy nomination, #2 on Top Rap, #59 on Billboard Top 100 (same album;track) was done on Windows XP, Digital Performer 5, Echo Layla Interface, Cubase, and Alesis M1 active. Not bragging just saying it's what do with the tools you have that counts.

The real big brain move would be to allow music to have breathing room and dynamics as it once used to rather than perpetuating the idea that louder at any cost would be better. And to be clear I'm not saying you're doing so or hating in any way, I'm just saying this in general. I know that it really comes down to a lot of factors like the type of music and the aesthetic being pursued, but I still hear way too many songs being released that are needlessly and very unpleasantly smashed and squashed up which would otherwise sound absolutely amazing if mastered more appropriately.
@mixbustv
@mixbustv 3 жыл бұрын
I feel you but I've been saying this for a while now (and you're basically saying the same thing) the problem is not loud, the problem is bad loud, because nowadays everyone is a pro, and people start to get used to bad sounding mixes and masters. But loud can be done well, and to some extent, that has been my specialty for some time now, that's why I (kind of) joke and say loudness only bothers those who can't do it properly. But yes, many times tracks are unnecessarily loud, that's a bad artistic choice, add that to no mastering engineer will ever say "I can't go that loud without messing this up, you should try someone else" there you have it. But I am not against the loudness war because on some, many, genres it is a style and it takes skills, gear, experience to do it well so I'm in, that's my field there but again, bad loud is easy, good, not so much. There are also awful mixes, many times the mastering stage gets the blame when it's actually bad mixing. But bad taste is bad taste, and nobody can't teach taste. On the dynamic part and breathing, I never really got this, but aside specific genres, I have done some extremely dynamic mixes and masters, which in their loudest parts are *really* loud. I think the lack of dynamic is not in the mastering process, is in the arrangements, way less real instruments played and boring static mixes with no automation on anything and where too much is being left to plugins that do things for you automatically, which is great for the good engineer who use em to save time that he can use instead of doing all the things needed to make a mix alive, it's bad for those who just use them to save time, period, and leave their mixes like that. Technology should make us more proficient and efficient, not lazy. Anyway, digression. The saddest part of this is the audience getting used to bad, that's the scary to me

I' m not sure whether the clipping actually takes place in the AD-converter itself or in the op-amp in front of it. I know for sure that some op-amps behave in a fvcking weird way when they are overdriven. Instead of a straight clipped wave, there may be 'dips' reaching the opposite half. In addition, each overdriven chip slows down and in many cases it takes some time before it starts to react again to changes in the signal after the overdrive. Of course, better chips come out of the overdrive much quicker, and that may be the key. It would be interesting to see how a simple diode clipper would work ( Zener for hard and ordinary silicon for soft mode). Eventually some more advanced precise circuit. Maybe it would be cheaper alternative?
@mixbustv
@mixbustv 3 жыл бұрын
Just take the Zener limiter in THD mode, transparency is out of the question
@thevicol
@thevicol 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, diode based voltage controlled stages distort as fvck. But what I meant was a simple zener-based overvoltage protection circuit. Electronically, it is a completely different thing. It' s more like distortion but with a much sharper transition between linear range and flat waveform compared to typical guitar stompboxes.

Glad you made this response, but I hope you might consider taking the OG video down? (sorry, I know it would cost you some views) It's REALLY hard to find information on converter clipping, presumably because it's a "trade secret," but these days I think it's more important that it stay guarded because of the "spin-off video" thing you're referencing. There's a reason you don't start teaching flying double-roundhouses to white belts, especially if you KNOW they'll start "teaching their friends on the playground..." This is one of those things that's best being "unlocked" by hard work and high-level understanding. You have a huge channel and "with great power..."

none it's as transparent and all of them react differently based on the material while the AD+ doesn't really. And it's not just the distortion, is the stereo field, it's everything. I can only say which ones are my favorites, but again, they change based on the track.

What is a good enough converter? Which specs should be considered?
@mixbustv
@mixbustv 3 жыл бұрын
Few, mine, of course, Lavry Gold, HEDD (to a lesser extent), another couple I'm probably forgetting now. It's not the specs, specs won't tell you how a converter clips because is considered "off label use" Take the burl, you can push it (not this much) but it colors, and personally I don't want colors in my converters (unless is a switch I can turn off like on this one)

It isn't loud enough for me anymore in the room that I am in. Would the next step be buying large monitors like 8inch, or what would you recommend If I wanted louder output volume. Thank you!
@mixbustv

Your monitors amp is what dictates your max volume, if it's not enough you need bigger and more powerful monitors. Altho' unless you have really small ones, volume shouldn't be an issue when mixing, mix at low level
