There are almost 2000 Hackspaces in the world. If you live in a big city, chances are you don't really have to walk far from where you are sitting right now to find one.
Despite being so wide-spread, Hackspaces are virtually unknown to the majority of the population.

Visited the Brighton hackerspace in England, UK a few times. The people there are very knowledgeable, the tools - usually working. If you're female working on some electronics for an art project they'll bend over backwards to help you ;)

Watch out for artists. They can have an odd sense of not paying or reciprocating for your help. Bit too free wheeling.

I second that the one near me was set up by a developer a few years ago started it off just meeting up with other developers and making enthusiasts in a pub but it upgraded to have its own premises and its small but still going strong and slowly gaining members.
