Is nutsedg known by any other name
@maurodimauro5897
@maurodimauro5897 Ай бұрын
I've been using Sedgehammer for 17 years now. Took over 5 years to exhaust all the nutlets in the front yard. (Entire "lawn" was nothing but nutsedge when we moved in.). Sprayed the yard 3 times per summer. The key is to spray before the new plants start developing new nutlets... at about the time they develop the 8th blade. Dawn dish liquid is my surfactant of choice. It breaks down the waxy coating on the blades to let the product be absorbed better. Use about a 1/4 teaspoon in a 3 gallon sprayer. Do not let them go to seed! They'll propagate like wildfire... And tick off the neighbors. That's why I'm still battling them to this day! The neighbors' nutsedge keeps sending seeds our way. Don't waste your money on the single serve packets.. If you (or your neighbors) have nutsedge, you'll easily hit the break even point with the bottle. And don't get lazy... Stay vigilant or they'll gain the upper hand on you. I'm still using the bottle I bought 16 years ago, when I realized there's no quick fix for an "infestation.". These days a 3 gallon mix lasts all summer. When the lawn was covered, I'd go through 2 tanks per treatment. Sedgehammer kills only nutsedge. It won't kill grass, flowers, or other weeds. I'll spray when its dry and the plants are thirsty, and when I know it won't rain for the rest out the day. Don't spray on a windy day, do wear long pants, and hold the sprayer nozzle close go the ground go keep from spraying yourself. Don't cut the lawn until at least the next day to allow the product to work its way down the blades. It will kill the plant, but not the nutlets...nothing kills those. Within 2 days you'll notice the nutsedge turn yellow/brown. Now its dead, but it won't wither. At this point just cut the lawn or pull it from the garden. Not so fun facts: Nutsedge propagates by seed, rhizomes and nutlets (kind or like mini tulip bulbs.) Each plant can produce dozens of nutlets. Each nutlet can produce dozens of new plants (Do that math!) Nutlets can sprout new plants year after year until they are exhausted. Nutlets can lay dormant for years, and re-activate when soil conditions are right. When you pull a plant, the nutlets break free and remain in the ground. Best of luck to you all!

You would have to start as soon as the growing season starts... Or it will multiply thru seeds, roots and underground nuts. By the way... No Before and After on this video... Because 98 percent die with one treatment. The ones that do not die have not sprouted before spraying. Lots of water makes most come up in less than week. Then, Spray...

Nutsedge has been haunting me for a few years first, I learned by mistake of pulling it and it multiplied, as you talked about. I found this stuff made by Ortho It’s a Nutsedge killer plus it kills 50 other weeds. Are used it and it wiped the stuff out. No Nutsedge for two years started seeing it last year a few here and there I’m getting ready now to sprayed again with the ortho Nutsedge killer. Only problem you can’t buy it in New York so I had to go to Jersey and I bought a case of it this way it’ll last me for many many years, the stuff works. That’s Ortho Nutsedge killer. I've managed Nutgrass (sedge) by pulling it. I reach to the bottom and wiggle it out by the root, which is reddish. I don't see any of the multiple nuts shown. When I first got it, the lawn guy at Ace Hardware said pulling it will just cause it to spread so I bought a pricey specific herbicide for it ($40 2-part, not Sedgehammer, ~22 yrs ago). Killed adjacent Fescue grass but not the Nutgrass. It just pops up individually that I can pull out without spending much time. Sometimes returns in the same place, but more often at other spots in the yard, so perhaps seeds from wind or bird droppings.

Sedgehammer worked OK on nutsedge but only SUPPRESSES Kyllinga; which is the more invasive weed near Houston and my biggest problem. To get both you need Dismiss or a generic (Sulfentrazone Herbicide). Both Sedgehammer and Dismiss are extremely expensive but you only need 1/2 teaspoon per gallon, so the Dismiss 6 oz bottle ($67-95) lasts me 3 years. The Green Kyllinga is brown in 2 days and the nutsedge is starting to die. Dismiss also kills Dollarweed and Spurge.

I don't think temperature really maters for Sedgehammer?
@TheLawngineer
@TheLawngineer 11 ай бұрын
This is a good catch! You know what, the label actually doesn’t say anything about temperature. However, it does state that you should avoid applying when the turf is under stress. In which case high temperatures on cool season turf could be a stressor. Alternatively for warm season grass, cooler temperatures are a stressor. Thanks for bringing this up!

Will the Sedgehammer kill perennials too? Also, can it be used in beds where herbs or vegetables are grown?

I would never spray any vegetable plant with any herbicide. However, when using Sedgehammer, you can spray other plants in the landscape and it will not affect them including Lirope. 36 years of experience.

Using 1 scoop of that one time isn’t going to do anything. Want to be extra careful ensure there is no wind and walk backwards so you don’t contact it at all. Also, consider the items you eat and drink if you’re this concerned, almost everything you buy at the store, including genetically modified veggies, has cancer causing ingredients, dies, plastics, etc.
