DIY how to kill crabgrass. My crabgrass is not dying. How to prevent and control crabgrass
Crabgrass prevention and control are not always an easy task. Experience goes a long way in finding out all the tips and tricks to preventing, controlling, and killing crabgrass.
Understanding how to identify crabgrass is the first step. I find it common that people mistake crabgrass for johnson grass, orchard grass, tall fescue and quack grass.
All of the above mentioned grass types are perennial grasses and cannot be controlled by an annual grass herbicide. You're only option to controlling perennial grasses is to dig the grass out or a technique called sponging. sponging involves a localized treatment of glysophate (roundup), a non-selective herbicide, directly to the leaves of the unwanted grass. Careful not to apply too much or you'll most likely kill the grass and the grasses around it you like.

no disrespect but you’re a totally irresponsible to recommend a carcinogen such as Monsanto's Round up, a guy just won a case in the US due to getting CANCER from spraying this poison, whats next you recommending Agent Orange or DDT. recommending this to people for use in their garden where they, Children or pets may come onto contact with this poison is crazy., also round up stays in the soil for decades, and has a detrimental effect on other plants, microbes and insects. The article also shows how nearby use of Roundup affects farmers not using the “Roundup Ready” system of growing GMO crops coupled with the spraying of glyphosate. One farmer describes how he loses corn every time his neighbor sprays Roundup and the herbicide drifts onto his conventionally grown corn. Worse, his neighbor’s fields have become so compacted that every time it rains, Roundup-laden runoff floods his conventional crops. “ANYTHING YOU PUT ON THE LAND AFFECTS THE CHEMISTRY AND BIOLOGY OF THE LAND, AND THAT’S A POWERFUL PESTICIDE,” the farmer is quoted as saying www.planetnatural.com/roundup-killing-soil/

Really informative and well spoken on crabgrass! My lawn is 70% crabgrass, 5% clover, 10% bare from dead weeds I killed with weed-be-gone and it barely freezes in Dallas, Tx but it is now in the 90's with tons of bugs and a disabled single lady like me can hardly get outside in this climate

Now I know what I dug up! Luckily, it's outside my fence in the city's right of way. But I didn't want it coming into my yard. So....I dug most of them up, have a few more to go. As you said, I had to dig deep! Left some pretty good size holes. But I'm not replacing the dirt. I'm sure the grass will now start growing over the holes. St Augustine can grow really thick. That's what I'm counting on. Anyway, thank you for a great, informative video without unnecessary chatter!! I stayed with you till the end. And thanks again!!! 👍🏻

After 5 to 6 years of trying to combat crabgrass and not having a healthy lawn until this year I still have crab grass I bought Gordon’s crabgrass killer from Ace Hardware and mixed it half an ounce more than what I called for put in 1 tablespoon of Dawn dish detergent may be a little bit more and the crabgrass after I cut it down to the grass to 2 inches tall to really cut the heads off I sprayed the crabgrass it was dead in 2 to 3 days. It did not hurt my tall fescue. Subscribed

This video has convinced me (your knowledge of lawns and grass)... I need to abandon the idea of controlling the weeds in my lawn... (South Louisiana)work and make more money, find a local guy with your level of expertise, and pay him to take care of my lawn... last time I hired a company... they sprayed a few times a year... my lawn looked pretty much the same... wrong company...the next guy will have to be able to show and talk the level of knowledge you have, thx

Hi William. just remember it all starts with water. If you focus on the watering you can get some solid results out of most lawn companies assuming they put the products down correctly.

Great video! For my St. Augustine lawn, I had an invasion of crab grass in my backyard. I grows all over the neighborhood. One method you did not mention: I ripped out all the crab grass by hand, end of last summer. I seeded some new grass on top, Bermuda. It grew well into fall while the St. Augustine shuts already down. This year, the St. Augustine overgrew the Bermuda grass. Really good success displacing the crab grass. Because it grows horizontally it is really easy to grab and pull out. Ok, I had a few blister, I admit! 👍🏻😀

Very Knowledgeable video and channel... Open my eyes to issues that I couldn't understand regarding my lawn; thank you. I have a serious undesirable grass/weed/crabgrass problem at my home and I made the decision to Dig the whole lawn up and re-apply soil and go with new SOD. I deal with a Local Landscaper and He cuts several properties on my block / neighborhood. My question is am I wasting my money by going with new SOD and letting the Landscaper cut my lawn because the other lawns he cuts have similar bad crabgrass issues ? Thanks
@PestandLawnGinja
@PestandLawnGinja 5 жыл бұрын
Great question James. Few thoughts come to mind. The main issue is keeping your lawn healthy and happy. Second of all Identify your grass type. What we want to know is if you have a rhizomatous grass or not. If you're not sure go to a local nursery and have them identify your grass type. The name of the game is keeping the grass thick. If you don't have a rhizomatous grass type you may need to overseed annually or semi annually to keep the grass thick. Thickening up the grass will naturally help push weeds out. It will also help keep the microbes happy and healthy. You have to have to dial in the sprinklers. If pre emergents dry out for too long they lose there capabilities. The pre emergents have to be put down at the right times. Buy yourself a meet thermometer and measure the ground temps. I put my pre emergents down when ground temps hover around at 50 degrees F. If you follow these steps you'll be fine. First and foremost keep the grass thick.

Finally a video on this that's in Utah! My neighborhood has more of the tall fescues but my direct neighbor had the Crabgrass. And it's currently turning purple (thanks Trimec). Hey, can you do a video on the thistle types in Utah? Mainly the type that get the purple flowers?

Hey! Thanks for doing this. It's very informative. I've been studying weeds and lawn issues and how to identify which is which. And finally I found your video. It's made identifying them now a little easier. More than i knew 5mins ago despite working on thus for 2weeks. Images I've looked at are useful BUT you actually got down and really zoomed in on video to record it and I've found this much more helpful than images or other videos where they talk and talk but never get down in the soil which I think is a must in really helping a novice like myself. I'm gonna pop out now and get down in the soil and look at them to compare and hopefully finally identify! Thing is, I think I've prob got the majority of all you showed! How does this happen? My lawn was awesome last year after loads of work. But the UK winter just passed gave moss and boom all these cheeky weeds. Can't fathom what went wrong after years of no issues other than low grade grass and soil which I improved and it looked gorgeous. Anyway cheers....gonna go look now!! 👍

Great video! I am so glad I came across this video and your channel!! I learned a ton in a very short amount of time - instantly subscribed! Thank you for sharing your considerable knowledge 🙂 Not-so-quick question: I seem to get 3 varieties of horizontally growing grass that I assume is all “crabgrass”. One is what you showed (round pattern, long stemmed creepers). The second one is also round-patterned, typically starts with 3 thick, very white colored stems growing out into an almost frond-like pattern of smooth & pointy blades. Roundup doesn’t seem to work and I have to remove each manually with the weed weasel - luckily they have short roots. The last one grows long across the ground - like a vine. I have pulled up sections up to 18 inches long. Even if this stuff looks dead and is brown and dry it will continue to grow once it gets wet. My question is are these all considered “crab grasses”? PS - I can’t wait to binge watch your channel 🙂!!

What do you think about these companies who sell plans and come out periodically for fertilization, weed control, and aeration?
@PestandLawnGinja
@PestandLawnGinja 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment. Great question. I'm part of a local service company. Here is my brief answer. If you can find a company that incorporates Macro and Micro nutrients that your local area needs there is a ton of benefits. Most granular formulations do not contain micro nutrients. Think of macro nutrients as a whole wheat pasta and micro nutrients as your fruits and vegetables for your own body. The macros stimulate growth and the micros provide nutrients to build and fortify overall health and better root growth. The micros are expensive to put into the mix and that's why its not common for companies to include them in there mix. If you ask the right questions you can find the right company for what you want. Most inexpensive lawn spray companies use micro nutrients only and that's what the cheap price gets you. Overtime the lawn uses up the available nutrients and stops giving you the great results you once had and using the macro's only stops working. Hope that helps.

So to make this a "crabgrass killer for dummies video". I need to use Prodiamine over the winter? Over the entire lawn? As a preventive measure or just where I've had crabgrass? Generously so it gets down into the soil or lightly? Are there directions on the bottle, should I follow them? Then in the spring & summer when I see the crabgrass I spray it with with the mix of Quinclorac and seed oil... Correct? Just on the crabgrass itself or in the entire area of the crabgrass. Because I've tried to dig it up and lay sod then around the sod cut line 2-3 weeks later beautiful new crabgrass.
@PestandLawnGinja
@PestandLawnGinja 5 жыл бұрын
Great questions. My suggestion is to apply the prodiamine over the entire lawn. For best results apply in late fall and late winter before the ground temps reach 50 degrees. you can get pre emergent in a granular form or a spray form. I like the spray forms because it ensures it goes down evenly and hits the edges where the concrete meets the grass. There are plenty of instructions on the bottle and each bottle may vary slightly. If you do the granular route be sure to spray along the edges. Make sure you use the medium to high rates as well. The nice thing about prodiamine is chemically it breaks down with heat not cool temperatures. Be sure to keep up on your watering as well. It can fail if the area goes completely bone dry. If you stay up on the pre emergents and apply them correctly and have correct watering regiments in theory you will not have crabgrass the next season. The quinclorac is not a preventive maintenance just a curative. I only apply quinclorac directly to the crabgrass. Technically you could broadcast it to the entire lawn but I don't see a point in that unless crabgrass is throughout the entire lawn. Great questions.
