DO NOT TRUST These Navigation Techniques/Tools
Most of the navigation techniques we use have been around for a long time and form part of the syllabus for many outdoor qualifications.
This can lead to the assumption that these techniques are tried, tested and infallible - which couldn't be further from the truth.
In this video I take a light-hearted look as to why many of the map reading and navigation techniques that we know and love shouldn't be trusted!!!

Great point! So many people use only one or no reference of navigation? Especially in an urban environment.

Craig, great production- fairplay. So what I am taking away from this is, Navigation is the skill of identifing the commonalities within a series of compromises. Then utilising this information to positively locate your position, best plan and follow a route from one location to another. T👍

great video Craig showing the cons with navigation, especially when trying to be very precise over large distances all the inaccuracy build up. The Craig in blue spoke like a true DS on a training team. My biggest problem with pacing as soon as your with another person and start talking i loose count.

Infanteers also struggle with keeping count as they have to keep taking their socks off if they need to count above 10 :)

LOL, very true on the DS observation 🤣🤣 I also share your struggle of remembering my pacing when I'm with others as well as starting/stopping my stopwatch - I'm too easily distracted!

Use pacing beads instead of trying to count in mind.
@TheBushcraftPadawan
@TheBushcraftPadawan 2 жыл бұрын
@@daic7274 nothing wrong with that technique. I personally use pacing beads, but the point I was making is that you still need to remember to start and stop counting, the pacing beads won't do that for you.

Once again a GREAT video Craig. With experience and perhaps a tad more self belief when I am teaching/using nav techniques I have now adopted the phrase that nav is a precise, imprecise science. Even GPS is not 100% accurate. All you can do is to use techniques to assist you. They will be more accurate than none at all but they need to be used in context. They help to confirm your position rather than being the be all and end all.

As a FAR superior Yank...who is well versed in navigation both civvie and military, well schooled in the use of all types of compass' including several sun dial methods and technology, I can say with 100% certainty that I have never ever in my life, been 100% lost...although I have been a might confused for a day or two...or three! Great vid! keep up the great work! Bravo!

Hey mate, I first learned to map read about 25 years ago when I was in the army cadets. Over the past couple of years I've started getting back out in the Northumberland hills and thanks to your videos re learned the skills I once had. Great videos as always.

That's very kind of you to say mate. I've had a bit of stick about the video from a few people who didn't watch it to the end, so I'm glad it resonated with you 👍

Honestly, your videos are the best I've seen for UK based map reading. The earlier videos explaining os maps etc really helped me remember stuff.
