Do's and Don'ts of How To Move Your Feet in Boxing when Throwing the Jab. Tom Yankello of the @World Class Boxing Channel covers a common mistake that is commonly made when people throw the left jab or the right jab if you are a southpaw. Tom shows this example first with a southpaw. When the southpaw throws the jab, Tom shows you a footwork mistake that often occurs- he twists the toe. This is problematic because now you need to replant your foot to jab the guy. Your toes should face the direction where you are going. The foot should be pretty much straight ahead. If you jab and turn the foot, you have to replant. Instead, you should step, step, step, and throw the jab. Another reason turning the foot is wrong is because you take the tension off his right side (since he is a southpaw). When you throw the jab, it is a twist. If you turn the toe, you lose that tension. In addition, you end up locking your hip out. You have to open the foot open and point the toe where you are throwing the punch. This allows you to freely throw through the punch. You never lock your hip out. Another issue is when people talk about wide stance giving you more power. This is WRONG! Just because you may see a person who possibly won a world title, does not mean they are flawless. There are always exceptions, however for the majority, you want to ensure you have the proper body mechanics to give you a great foundation. The key to stepping with the jab is to turn your waist without turning your toes. If you do it incorrectly and lock your hips, you will get yourself off balance. You also won't get the maximum power by not keeping your foot straight. You must remember, you are pointing your toes to the target. Tom then shows you from an orthodox stance, the improper and then the proper footwork for throwing a jab.

I know what you mean, you could try his boxing course on his website, you have to pay for that though but I brought it myself in the last black friday sale and honestly it's completely changed the way I throw every punch, I spent the rest of lockdown training them every day on all the micro details he taught but everyone of my punches have become over double power and up to 3x faster. Personally it's one of the best lessons I had for boxing and I boxed for years before and never got taught these things. (Sorry for the edit, I made a typo)

you do see a lot of great "fleet" fighters turn their toe after a jab to set up a switch style pivot, which lets you feint direction changes without a hitch.. so not always a mechanical error when you see it - ali was a good example of someone who wasn't always "getting away with it"... sometimes he was setting people up for different things. its wrong if your gunna do the wrong thing.. take big steps forward. But there isn't one style of movement when your at the edge of someone's range. you can still generate slight clearance with both feet (like a fencer does), chop down on your steps, and use that posture/ position to move around the target (like a boxer does). and if you want to punch back across the body with the rear hand, you slide your lead foot slightly out like a switch step. it implies an emphasis on lateral movement; and that movement can be as subtle, slight and detailed as the boxer who is preforming it. maybe its not something you can or should teach... but to say certain great fighters get away with it, in spite of doing it wrong...isn't right.

What a coincidence this video came up and I'll so glad it did, because I've been watching a Russian coach who advises that left foot cocked and locked on the jab because he said it's how you keep your balance on the one-two. I thought it was strange too because I'm a a former fencer, (don't nuke me! 😂), and yeah, toes straight ahead. I don't do that with Boxing though. I tried his method attacking a heavy bag and while it's kind of sturdy, a nagging thought worried me that my knee could get torqued. 😂 I'm a beginner just trying to figure things out and might be too tall for some of tar anyway. :) Thank you for putting this up, because it made the decision for me not to bother trying it anymore. Can't wait for Roys fight and I wish you both well.

That's true. They did a pendulm you're bounce. But I think they do teach to keep it cocked when you go to stick for the 1/2. There are videos on KZfaq of a Russian coach. Best to let him explain it but I STILL think Tom is right on this. Joe Louis is perhaps the best textbook boxer I've seen. He had great fundamentals. Coach. Another great tutorial... I did not know that some people turn their toes when throwing the jab. That's crazy! Footwork is so, so important. You need to be balanced to be able to either throw or move at any given moment and if you are turning your toe it's not only an inhibitor but can lead to ligament damage if they gotta move quickly in a contrary direction. Thanks for putting it out there. Can we have more lessons on footwork? Coach, I wrote this before you brought up the nonsense about wide stance = more power! You are so correct and it's one of my bug bears too... SRL said it's all in the balance and you are stating the truth about shoulder width. It's all about the fundamentals and building on those fundamentals and building on basic body mechanics.... Actually, it's all about common sense!

You need to tell them to hang their heads. Basic fundamentals must tell you that that is incorrect. You need to be able to throw your shots from a balanced base from all angles and forward, back and side to side. If you can't do this then something is wrong and needs to be addressed. Your coach is setting you up to fail.

It is true for other striking martial arts as well. Ex Karate guy in our gym also does what Tom shows when he throws his right straight and jab; even though his stance is competely bladed meaning both his feet pointing sideways, whenever he throws jabs he kind of stomps his front foot facing the opponent. He throws right crosses excatly like Tom does. And he is insanely fast with his jabs and crosses. This is how he fights from long range, always bouncing.
