mine got freaked out by a stranger trying to feed it in the campground, it flew into the woods. It got in about 30 yards and landed in a sapling, he was perched about 10feet off the ground about the same height he flew in at. he was clicking his beak at me. I bent down the sapling he hopped on my shoulder ,end of story. he wasnt in there long enough to make a new friend.

Yesterday (6/6/2023) my green cheek conure escaped from my backyard because he had gotten scared of a swinging figurine in my yard. His wings were clipped earlier that day but weren't clipped enough, and a generous gust of wind really helped him. We searched for hours and I was extremely distraught. I had to take a break since he is my bird and I was the most hurt, my parents kindly kept looking while I took a break to drink water at home and grieve. I googled about parrots escaping and the first result was to bring their cage outside, so I did so, and by all the toys rattling and things he remembered, he started to call to me! We did call and recall together, me yelling his name and he'd respond with a screech until I eventually found my baby in the tree. I was so relieved and our very kind neighbor gave us a ladder. We used a T-Stand to try and reach him but he got scared, flying off again into another neighboring yard, landing on the bottom part of the wired fence and holding on. I went and picked him up then carried him back home safely with a tight grip on him to my chest. I felt so lucky and relieved, he is all okay but only has a small scratch on his head. He is happy and himself. Never give up... I really wanted to because I was very discouraged, but your bird loves you and does want to come home.

I just want to say thank you. Today our Lineolated Parakeet got scared and flew off when my husband opened the door for a package. We were both distraught because he is so small and its supposed to get very cold tonight. This video was extremely helpful. It gave us hope that we would find him and thankfully a few hours later we did, just a few streets away. Everything you said was true. He wasn't far, and when I called for him he called back, looking for his flock. So I just want to say thank you again. You helped us bring him home.

I’ve seen so many people say recall training is the biggest lifesaver. If your bird is recall trained or stick trained, and they get out, you do the triggers for recall and it switches them from panic to calm and they can come home.

Good advice! I would add posting on some of the lost parrot sites too and it helps to know your bird's band number. For some reason my Quaker was scared and hiding on the ground in bushes and window wells and wouldn't call back so we lost him for TWO WEEKS. Like he said DON'T LOSE HOPE! It was early spring here, temps in the 40s, thunderstorms and icy rain. Was so awful. We got our baby back though, you will too!! 💕 Eventually he DID call out for us when we finally found him. Poor thing was literally hoarse from calling for us - the whole family cried we were so relieved to have him back!

Many years ago our Senegal used to sit on my wife’s shoulder when she would go outside to get the mail. One day the “Lucky” flew off her shoulder and up into a tree. She put a ladder on the tree to try and climb up to Lucky. The bird flew off into the sky. We looked for days but never found it. The only lucky thing about Lucky, is that we live in Hawaii and Lucky probably lived “La Vida Loca”… for a while.

My Indian Ringneck was gone for three days. He was 9 miles away and flew down to some children having recess and was peekabooing them. The principal took him inside and made a Facebook post. Someone on Nextdoor sent me the Facebook post. He was also spotted at a persons bird feeder and that was shared on Nextdoor. It is the best tool for lost pets.

Could you do a video about all poicephalus parrots? Brown heads, Senegals, red bellied etc and compare them? I feel like that would definitely make a good video!
@jesshansen3690

I taught my goffin to fly when he was very young and would let him fly around my yard. The key to ease of getting them back, if they are free flying is to teach them how to make a descent. It's like a pilot learning how to fly a plane. Not all the movements come completely naturally. It's a skill that is learned. Teach them inside your house by placing them on a higher surface, while you lie on the floor nearby. Do it over and over again and they slowly learn how to descend properly. Very important to get a very strong feel for safety from raptors. After a few years of flying my bird, we had falcons show up on the property, so I decided not to free fly him outside after this. I did have a huge flight cage for him outside though and I would put him out there for hours a day. That helped a great deal!

My dad opened my budgies cage before he went work and it was inside but usually my mum puts its cage outside when she wakes up so she was about to put it outside and it probably got startled and saw the opening of its cage and flew straight out luckily my mum knew the direction so we have some sort of an idea where it might be but it’s been lost for three hours now and we left the cage outside we also just got this bushier a few weeks ago so this is heart breaking it was quite young too so it’s likely to not survive very long due to a cat trying to eat it yesterday and it being so small and confused I hope I find it and this video really helped

Back in the early 90s I had a boyfriend who got a baby blue-and-gold macaw. We didn't live together because I worked in the field as a fisheries biologist, but I would often be there on weekends. We took his boat to Shasta Lake in California for a weekend when the bird was still very young. He had been testing his wings by flapping but had never actually flown and his wings weren't trimmed. Well, before we even began the boat adventure, we discovered that indeed, he could fly. We were walking down to the boat ramp with him and he caught a little bounce off my friend's shoulder and off he went across a long stretch of water and out of sight into the surrounding forests. We were heartbroken. We drove around the rest of the day looking for him with no luck. It was a hopeless situation--if you know northern California, you know there are vast areas with very few people, so even a large and loud macaw could easily go unseen. We decided to spend a night at a hotel but we were resigned to the fact that we had lost him forever due to a stupid, stupid mistake. This was before the internet, so you couldn't learn from thousands of people like you can now. We had driven three hours to get there, so it wasn't possible to keep searching. People didn't have cell phones. Hopeless. Yet, the next day we drove to the docks and someone had found him in a tree and somehow we got him back. Poor Birb was fine, but not very happy on the ride back. My boyfriend did not have him very long before he decided to re-home him while he was still young. He found a very experienced guy in San Diego who gave him a good home. -- Probably even more unlikely was a pet rat that escaped from my house last summer. I live in a rural area and there are lots of critters right outside the door--wild rats (roof rats, not the same species as the Norway rat kept as pets), squirrels, raccoons, opossums, coyotes, weasels, and occasionally cats. Normally you will find a pet rat within 24 hours without even trying, but he was nowhere to be found and after four days I had to accept he was gone for good. Eight days later I was at my computer late at night and heard a noise on my porch. Open the door and there was Timmy, at my feet, a bit dirty and skinny but otherwise happy and healthy. He lived to a very old age and a week ago I had to take him to the vet to be helped over the Rainbow Bridge. He had required a lot of hospice care in his last month, so it was tough to say goodbye and the house is not the same without him. I cried writing this. He was a special little guy! You can see some of my critter friends on my KZfaq channel--I rescued a baby long-tailed weasel in the house many years ago and there are some cute videos of him before he left to be a real wild weasel instead of a house weasel.

I’m in Canada so I never bring my parrot outside except in the summer and only for short periods to my moms in a small cage to get some sun. I would be devastated if I lost her because it gets too cold even on summer nights, winter nights she wouldn’t last 10 minutes.

They're more active than a Green cheek and more playful, but can also mean a bit more noisy and hormonal, but otherwise great beginner parrots imo. Best way to put it, slightly more advanced Green Cheek, but still beginner territory.

@elliana2
@elliana2 2 жыл бұрын
Yes they are loud, but if you give them a lot of attention, they won't squawk too much. My Jenday lived 21 years, and was a wonderful pet. Give him a good diet, mine loved almonds, raisins, brocolli, grapes, pellets, egg bits, tiny amount of cheese, he would eat anything. Make sure they get out of the cage at least 2-3 hours a day, and give him a lot of chewable and foraging toys to play with. Good luck! They are sturdy, wonderful pets if you give them enough attention and a nice large cage.
