Pruning fruit trees is one of my favorite garden chores each year. I love knowing what I want my fruit trees to look like ten years from now, so each year of trimming and shaping them gets me one step closer to lots of great fruit production.

Trim that peach tree back 50% at its young age!! It will do it a GREAT service. We get gigantic peaches when pruned heavily. Open that beautiful tree up! Gonna be a gorgeous peach tree 🍑 😍 Been pruning our tree for 12 years now. Promise you it is worth it.

I planted a Jonagold apple tree this year and it produced lots of blossoms which I took off because it is too young for fruit, it is hard though. I read a book that teaches how to keep fruit trees small and says to prune in winter (dormant) to encourage growth and to prune at the summer solstice to control size.

I just ordered your book 'everything worth preserving' and I can't wait for it to arrive tomorrow. I was going to order it next month, but I panicked a bit and felt I needed to get it NOW. For a little bit of context: I volunteered for two days at a city event in where I received two small seed starters of what they told me were sunflowers. They came in small little cardboard water cups wrapped in some sort of plastic or cellophane. They were very wet, so I set them in a corner with a desk light over them and kept them covered, just like I've seen you do in some of your videos. I looked at them last night, and there are green things coming out! Eeck! I've never grown anything in my life and its been my experience that even if I just look at a plant, it tends to wither and die. It took me a minute to realize those were leaves! And then I marveled at how beautiful they were! 🤩I grew something! 😍And then I panicked because I could see the roots pushing up, so I immediately bought your book like it's going to save it from my plant-killing gaze. I think I need to put them in something larger, but other than that, I don't know what to do. I can't plant it in the ground, it's not my land, and quite honestly, that sounds like super advanced work, I'm so not at that level, lol. But circling back: My cute little seed in the pretty dirt now has beautiful baby green leaves!! 😍 OMG. 😳

Melissa, a th thing I noticed is dead wood doesn't hold temp. So if you put you fingers around the little branch it should feel cool. A dead branch will not. Also, branches that turn inward or cross should be removed.

It is best to disinfect your pruners often, especially when moving to a new tree. I didn't do it and now I think I've infected a couple of trees.

I’d like to know how to properly prune grafted trees. I got a grafted semi dwarf cherry tree (it’s not time to prune yet) but I’m trying to prepare now and don’t want to mess it up and accidentally kill it.

I never cut the blossoms. I ALWAYS wait till the fruit sets and remove the excess fruit instead. We never know if that blossom is going to set fruit or not.

I’ve heard that if you don’t stack trees they’re stronger..? Thoughts?

I'm guessing you mean stake. Usually people stake the tree so it can't move it all, it needs to still move.

I wonder if anyone can help me with my peach tree? About 2 months ago I bought a peach tree at Tractor Supply Co. It was a dormant twig with small roots. I planted it according to the instructions, and it's done absolutely nothing. I live in central New Jersey, zone 7a. Is it normal for it to still be dormant? Shouldn't it have done something by now? It's in full sun, in a south facing backyard with nothing around it, and gets watered regularly despite the fact that it's not growing and has no buds or other signs of life.

Buy from a reputable nursery if you only buy one tree. Then it’s easier to take back trees that die. Lowes and such may be ok… you can return any that die in a year.. but they may not have replacement trees. Tractor supply may not have replacement stock.

I love your videos. However, I am not following you logic to over prune and your scaffolding...not following your logic. Not a negative commet...it's a me problem not a you problem. 🙂
