Would you believe me if I told you my fall garden usually does better than my summer garden that's planted in the spring?
It may seem counter-intuitive to plant cool-weather-loving crops during the hottest time of year. And you may be wondering how many of those seeds even germinate when the temperatures are soaring.
The most important thing with fall gardening is getting your timing down. Since many cold-weather crops tend to bolt during hot temperatures (most often above 85°F), there are a few things to keep in mind when starting seeds in the summer for your fall garden.

Our cold loving plants always bolt for some reason these last few years, even at very early spring! 😞

Thank you for the informative, upbeat, fall planning video, Melissa. The inspiration and encouragement create a wonderful experience on this channel. A lot of women with great content mingle dark topics in their content, which changes the video vibe towards inspiration and encouragement to inciting anxiety. Whatsoever things are true, honest, just, pure, lovely, AND have a good report, is the backbone of wise content that yields fruit. Once again, thank you for keeping the content bright and concise.

Yesterday, I put a shading system to cool my Fall plantings of sugar snap peas and to help my currently growing pole beans. I'm planning on removing radish, spinach, carrots, and beets. I'm in Spokane.. frost date is end of September to 2nd week of October.

Fall gardening in NW Arizona is the best! I have the advantage of high tunnels with shade cloth for seed starting this time of year. Once monsoon season starts, it's a great time to start seeds. We take the shade cloth off in late September and put up plastic which extends my fall garden season through winter for those cool weather crops. I'm in zone 8b with a first frost anytime between the end of October to December. I miss the PNW but not the constant rain where I used to live. 100 inches a year and a very short season with no sun. Happy gardening!

I have carrots, green and wax beans, sugar pumpkins, cantaloupe (which may be too late), and acorn squash started last week and all up except the carrots. Also a little broccoli and cabbage at the shady end of a bed we just rebuilt, but I won't be surprised if they don't sprout, because I have a pullet that has gotten in there and scratched around. The cabbages are actually a replacement for one pumpkin hill that was decimated.

I was picking my brussels sprouts halfway into winter with snow on the ground last year!!! When spring came, I still had some that were edible! Crazy. I won't pull them til spring from now on.

Mellissa my husband and I moved to Sandpoint, Idaho from Eugene, Oregon in December of 2020. Before I had a small garden of tomatoes, peppers and zucchini. We built a greenhouse that spring and now have a couple outdoor gardens on our 5 acre property. This is the third year trying to grow brassicas and have all bolted. . So frustrating! My husband says I should stop trying but I’m stubborn. Luke from MI Gardener said they like a firm soul. I don’t know what to do.

Shifting from production to finishing seed. It's mostly an issue with greens.

It's plants change from their standard manner of growing to bolting into seed production. Whether spinach or carrots or basil, they switch from growing in size into growing flowers for seeds.
