I have a NEX-5N that I bought new in 2011, and you are making me so happy realizing what a great investment it was at the time! I've made videos on and off with it and am going to start again soon so I've been doing my research and your channel is so helpful. The only thing is, it is on version 1.00, and now my Mac is too advanced to be able to install the new firmware! Luckily (?) it looks like the 5N didn't have many updates.

Thank you! Vintage lenses are definitely the best on a budget, you can find old Canon FD lenses for really cheap on eBay and get an adapter so they mount on the NEX cameras. If you have more of a budget though the Sigma 16mm f1.4 and 30mm f1.4 are really great lenses.

When I got my Nex-3 it was on Version 1. The previous owner never updated it. I found and cleaned off 2 Mini USB (not Micro USB) cables and got it connected and upgraded to version 5.

Just bought an NEX 5R used. So to learn about the camera I searched KZfaq for tips and came accross your NEX videos. Today I watched this video about the firmware update and found my camera was still on 1.01. Thanks for your suggestion to update the firmware. Without you I would not have known so quickly to check it. Now 1.03. Still confused about the Lens/Mount version. Can I update that the same way on a different part of the Sony site?

What version were you on prior to updating? What's the best improvement you've seen since updating?

@@damianranko9740 Ver 1.02. No noticable/significant improvement. Sony's website mentioned about "faster Hybrid AF". I guess you will notice it if you still have the ver 1.01. Mine was already at 1.02

@@michaeltimj I went from 1.01 to 1.03 The significant improvement for me was the addition of a menu function allowing non sensor third party lenses to be used. I purchased a Lensbaby lens and at 1.01 it kept telling me the lens was not connected correctly. This was all fixed when I upgraded to 1.03, the lens works great now.

I’ve just picked up a 5N in the UK. Obviously I cannot get 24fps or 60fps, unlike the USA model. If I were to update the firmware on my UK spec with USA spec firmware, am I just creating a jazzy looking brick or has the idea got legs? Great content btw 👍

Have you gotten the metal bottom plate for the Nex VG 10? It makes a world of difference because it spreads the load over the whole bottom of the camera preventing it from cracking

Don't forget lense firmware updates, yes fo the lenses. Put the lense on the camera and update in a similar way. Sony has many firmware updates for the lenses.

@@jad3ns1ms78 No, it's not possible. I resorted to use a phone through DroidCam. That will also serve you as a camera to record directly to OBS, for example.

Mine (Nex7) is already updated to its latest firmware 1.03 so i dont know what were improved .. but i am well satisfied on the controls right out of the box ..its like nature to me using the buttons and control , also the evf and screen and photo video result are on par with my friends A6000... Btw what is the lens attached to the 5R ? Looks huge but i like it

I can't seem to find one for the 3N either, it's possible that they have never released a firmware update for it.

Firmware doesn’t have to always match a specific model when the base hardware is technically the same. You could try downloading the firmware for a higher model and it might work but have other features disabled or simply not available because that hardware level function isn’t on that camera.

I wish sony made a new version of the VG. i owned the VG30 but dynamic range and videoquallity was incredible bad. Payed 600€ for it only to realise my 250€ a6000 is way better :/

I'm trying to shoot in manual mode, however ever shot on manual takes time to finish. like it will click 5 times with a few second of lapse in between,. after wards it will say "processing". Using High Sierra and none of the relevant software opens. The driver loaders, apps and actual updates are either incompatible or do nothing whatsoever after being clicked. Support for Sony cameras is abysmal.
