There are a lot of different Veterans Benefits available but the VA Aid & Attendance benefit can be a great way to offset the cost of assisted living, in-home care or a nursing home.
The Veterans Benefit I am talking about in this instance is the VA Aid & Attendance Benefit. I have provided some information below to help educate some people about the benefit.
Eligibility Requirements
- At least 90 days active duty (min 1 day during the approved wartime period)
- Honorable Discharge
- Surviving Spouse (a surviving spouse must have been married to the veteran at the time when the veteran passed away)
- Assistance with the Activities of Daily Living
- Meets income and asset criteria
- 65+ years of age or totally disabled
Pays For
- In-Home Care
- Assisted Living (ALF)
- Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF)
VA Aid & Attendance Benefit - 2019 Veteran's Benefits
- Surviving Spouse = $1209.00/mo
- Single Veteran = $1881.00/mo
- Married Veteran = $2230.00/mo
- Two Vets Married = $2984.00/mo

My mom was recently told by the VA that since her husband (the vet) never put a claim in for himself for A&A, she would not be able to receive this benefit. I've also heard it's best to hire someone to help get this benefit.

It's definitely best to hire an expert who can help compile all the appropriate information necessary to submit for this benefit. Find a highly trusted organization in your area that specializes in VA Aid & Attendance.

My father never put a claim in for himself and my mother received the full surviving spouse benefit. She was denied the first application but we got VA help and the second application cleared easily. She had the benefit for 2.3 years. Too bad we didn't know about this service before I took out a second on my house to help care for her care. Regardless, it was a blessing when it arrived. I hope this helps. Apply. (PS: My father served during the Korean War.)

This is my first time questioning any entities about “Surviving Spouse” Benefits.. Having said that, My late husband served ten (10) years with an Honorable discharge. He passed away in 1995. We were married 28 yrs. We both worked for the “ USPS”. So we both did not receive SSI. We had our Gov. pensions. Since he is deceased I receive part of his pension along with mine. I retired after 29 yrs.in the USPS .I have no idea if I qualify for any benefit whatsoever. I am also looking into a Independent living facility and one that also has within its facilities an assisted facility that I might need later on.Looking ahead. Now after my husband passed away, I thought long and hard about my coverage of health insurance es, so I have been paying Long Term Care In’s. Since then, through John Hancock Ins.. Who or where do I turn to next? Any help or information you give me would greatly appreciated. I’m 72 years old, live in SW Fl. Thank you so much in advance.

Hi Judith. I am sorry to hear about your husband. We are very grateful to him for his service to our country. First, I would like to say thank you for being so proactive about your own care needs and really thinking through your options. You are rare but extremely wise to do so!! I will list the steps to help you navigate this benefit. (Step 1) -- Every county is a little different, however the best thing to do is look up "Veteran Services" in the county you are located. Make sure this is a government owned or government managed organization. It's important that you avoid any fraudsters out there. A legitimate company will run by the local county government. You will want to speak with a "Veteran Service Officer (government employee)" who will be able to sit down with you and see if you qualify. (Step 2) -- If you qualify, great! They will help walk you through the process. If you do not qualify, there may be two different reasons. (i. high income/assets or ii. no assistance with ADL's needed). Please do not assume whether or not you will qualify. Let the Veteran Service Officer make that determination. (Step 3) -- If Veteran Services said you did not qualify because of income/assets being too high, there may still be hope. In this case, you may want to research as many elder law attorneys as you can in your area to see if you can find one who specializes in VA Aid & Attendance or Veteran Benefits planning. They may or may not have a free consultation but you could investigate and see if they can help you structure your assets/income to potentially qualify for the benefit. It is important that if you go this route that you do a lot of due diligence. Make sure that you speak with a Board Certified Elder Law Attorney if you decide to pursue this alternative route. Way to think ahead! If you would like to speak more or have any more questions, please email info@seniorsource.com or call 941-677-7233. If you are able to and would like to learn a lot more about all your different options, join us for the #1 Educational Event on Senior Care. To learn more, visit seniorsource.com

1. Served during wartime period? If no, no entitlement exists, if yes...2. Survivors Pension is based on income and net worth (which have limits). Income is based on your total monthly income minus medical expenses (health insurance, independent living facility etc...). But in order to count independent living facility cost as a medical expense you would have to be medically rated for Aid and Attendance. As long as you are under the income limit you may be eligible. However, net worth is a secondary factor. Too much net worth (assets-not including your home) then that would be disqualifying regardless of your income/medical expenses.

My dad was just diagnosed with dementia. He already gets aid and attendance, but we have to move him into a memory care facility that he cannot afford. Once his savings is gone I don’t know what we’re going to do, will the VA pay for memory care facilities?

Hi Robin. The best way to find this answer is to reach out to your local Veteran Services Officer (VSO). Typically, they work with the county and assist with all the VA related benefits questions.

Are Nursing Homes/Medicaid Entitled to the Dependency and Indemnity Compensation and Aid & Attendance. Because I am being told they are entitled to both. However VA has advised me the only get the Aid & Attendance

Hi Cynthia. Have you spoken to a local VSO or Veteran Services Officer? I am not sure if they have them where you live. Typically a VSO is employed by the County but works directly with the VA. I have found them to be extremely knowledgable and even more helpful than dealing with the VA directly.
