Do We Choose Our Thoughts?

"We [eventually] have to come to the conclusion whether we are in the materialist perspective or whether we are in the non-dualist perspective, in both cases we have to come to the conclusion that thoughts are cosmic events. They are generated by a Reality which is bigger than the separate individual we believe to be, and that they are cosmic events like the rain or the snow or a hurricane. And therefore the limited entity that claims authorship of the thought and claims to be the one who has made the decision is an imposter because it claims the authorship of something it has not created. It comes after the fact. It wasn't present when the decision was being made. The decision just came."

Its interesting that people never ask themselves where impulses from the heart come from. For instance a spontaneous impulse to buy an icecream can occur, and people never ask themselves where that impulse comes from. Then through some twisted idea they come to the conclusion 'I' made that decision even though the small 'I' never gave any input. How is it even possible; how did people come to the conclusion there is a 'little me'? What is also interesting is that this system of receiving urges to explore something and then seeking those things out works perfectly. Then comes along the idea of a small self that has to give input in accordance to beliefs it has, and now you have this constant distortion between impulses and action. An impulse comes, beliefs start distorting a previously clear input, and now there is resistance and confusion.

Many impulses come from conditioning. Eating ice cream is a pleasant activity stored in mental memory. A pleasant activity is one which promotes survival (ice cream has carbohydrates) stored in genetic memory.

I respect Francis; he has much to offer, and is Authentic. I would like to introduce more recent thinking. Do we live in a "Simutated Reality?" Consciousness is being explored via Physics and Mathematics. Myself, I'm old school. Full Consciousness comes from self reflection, observation of feelings and emotions, pain and suffering, then Forgiveness.

A Crist, an advanced Yogi and a deluded one have not the same capacity to excersise their free will. If we are completely inditified with the mind and ego we cannot excersize our free will.

We can choose the thoughts that the subconscious produces by choosing the impressions that we permit enter into the inner mind and By choosing the thoughts that we entertain. By doing so, we make the subconscious to elaborate thoughts about things we want, so it reproduces thoughts about what we want. We can consciously decide what thoughts will empower in our mind and become part of the inner mind. So our mind will .reproduce the thoughts we want in relation with the various events of the daily life. For example by training our mind instead of the compulsive critising of others , our mind we will think that others are beings of love and light encarmated in human bodies.

There is no one to be a victim of the mind because what you think you are IS created by the mind. I encourage you to question this "consciously chosen action or thought". That's a big illusion if you reeeally slow down and observe your experience. Thought are just arising like anything else in your experience. The thought that claims ownership and decision is also arising out of nowhere. A lot pf teachers are great but Sam Harris is really clear when talking about this experiential side. I recommend him.

@@mertkusluvan3107 There is no thought that claims ownership. Ego is not a thought. This is a false concept that many spiritual teachers proclaim. Ego is essentially desire and this desire-ego causes identification with the body and all other identifications as well and creates the illusion that the body is what "I am' and as a 'body-me' I am the agent of perceptions, thinking, feeling, decisions, etc.. which is an illusion. What is Conscious of the thoughts and what chooses thoughts is not a thought. I am Consciousness and as Consciousness I make conscious decisions using the mind and intellect. Of course this is possible for people with developed Consciousness, not for the majority. This is the truth. It would be good for Sam Harris to read what I say.

You can control what thoughts arise in your head. I do this every day. I can think of something and I see multiple images of what I thought. But I can also put my mind on receptive mode and get thoughts of things that I didn't create (this can get you to telepathy and channeling). Thoughts can be created and be received. BOTH!!!
@kopilit

You cannot control what thoughts arise -because the 'you' that thinks it is controlling them is also a just a thought arising. There may be periods of intense concentration on thought or images but no one is choosing or concentrating. Thoughts happen then we think we choose them later. The mind is playing catch up on events and think's it orchestrating events. That's the basic idea here.

@mertkusluvan3107

There is no choice. In the phenomenon you refer to, what really happens is there are thoughts firing like a machine gun and some claim that other thought is not true for whatever reason and that there is a subject inside that makes this decision. These are all thoughts. If you pay attention there is only consciousness and its activities

Yes there is not thinker, example, A) Rumbling in stomach (sensation perceived) B) internal monologue, “I must be hungry” (a thought) C) “Im going to eat a banana” (another thought) D) “Spirituality is bull of course there’s a thinker”. (yet another thought) Whether there is what feels like a pop up thought or a conscious thought they are all thoughts which are just perceived - that’s why Francis said that the fake thinker was not there when the thought occurred because the fake thinker’s thought is just another thought that seems to take ownership of the previous thought. Even this feeling of seeming to take ownership is another thought. For some reason we (as consciousness) for some reason tend to buy into this idea of this chain of apparently connected thoughts being as the result of a separate thinker.

Hi Rahul, yes it seems like that there is a difference between random spontaneous thoughts and an individual entity that can choose to follow particular thoughts or not. It was a video I watched a few years ago (can’t remember which) in it to a lady’s question Francis said ‘but that is just thought B’. This was a bolt out of the blue for me and since then I’ve loved this idea of there being no chooser and all there is is just awareness of all this. I think going from the stand point of awareness is the fundamental unchanging and everything else is just the changing coming and going of thoughts then it’s cool. Of course there is no entity that chooses to live their lives this way. It feels very liberating, yet again there is no individual ‘I’ that feels liberating - there is just an awareness of feeling liberated.

I use my free will to choose what to drink at any time after I decided I want to drink something. Like a computer, you get external data and also a computer can generate its own data. You are the witness/awareness of all of this you are not a thinker entity that is in control of having these thoughts or not, or choosing this particular thought or not. That’s what I think Francis is getting at.. is there an ‘I’ that just said that? Nope! Does it feel like there is an ‘I’ that is in control of typing this out? Yes but this is just another thought that comes and goes. Why does consciousness play this game of this stream of thoughts that seem to link up? Even that is just another thought that there was no ‘chooser’ of. There is awareness of all of this there is the experiencing of all of this, that’s all. In principle i agree.But the fact is more than 97% of the people identify themselves with body, mind and senses. For them desire induced by senses produce thoughts.So we must control and direct our thoughts through our free will which exist in all of us.which is pure and free of any guilt.We can control our thoughts by focusing our mind through logic and reason.This is a conscious action induced by consciousness(Not self consciousness).If we dance to the tune of our desires thoughts will control us and we must bear the consequences of our act.There are things on which we can't have any control.
