Priceless. I’m embarking on a 5 acre remote project involving rehabbing a 12x12 log cabin. It would have been so easy 20 years ago, but now at 63 with some health issues it is way more a challenge. Pray for me, lol.

Rooting & praying for you !!! My husband and I just bought 11 acres totally off grid with a 366 ft log cabin. Hasn't been taken care of in years we have so much to do......day by day, doing what we can afford and have time for. We hope to retire here in woods ❤

Local building codes and permit fees can crush a dream. That was my first lesson in home ownership. It's a tough lesson. I ended up selling at a slight loss and moving on.

My dream! Lots of regrets, my first marriage was to a house builder who REFUSED to build me a house... by the time I divorced him with no money it was all out of reach. Today we would love to try this, but I'm 64..... I still do furniture refurb, but no building anything large... praying we can do this some day!

Everyone should be allowed to do this... it is a crime that in many semi rural counties they have so many rules and codes it almost forces everyone to build or buys something so big it is hard to afford. So glad you uploaded this Brooke, you're the best!

I remember when that was us! Back in the '60's . Talk about the fear of falling in, if you could walk and talk you were out of diapers and off the bottle. And yes it was a lot of work by todays standards cleaning up after animals, milking cows gathering eggs But I never see a well pump at the kitchen sink in any of todays off grids like all of us had. Is it no longer safe to do ? All the best to you Jay and Jen. It's good to know the pioneer spirit is still alive and well! Your going to raise some strong children someday! -Keep us posted!

Just when your mind has the details and your pocket has the money, you can be certain Murphys Law will derail you. Don't wait until you retire to do heavy labor. The body gives out long before your mind. I snapped my spine doing something I've done often. Calcium deficient bones, I'm told. Desk job career, no activity.....Suddenly I'm restricted from lifting and carrying. Use your body when you're young. I think God puts your path out there at creation. So if your gut gives you a vision to live in the woods, you'll have Blessings as you pursue that desire. You managed to be debt free. Wow. That house is beautiful and inspiring. Thanks for sharing.

My house is 990 square ft. Including the garage. Here in Santa Barbara,California in one of the most expensive housing areas I bought and sold 2 houses since 1976 then bought the house and property from my ex spouse abt. 25 years ago and just paid it off🥰❣️Over the years we have renovated the inside completely plus just installed a gazebo and Pergola & Solar Panels on the outside- have always wanted a cabin in the woods but my little house is perfect in its imperfection.❤So great to see a young couple do this so early in their lives. Am 79 in couple days & so Thankful for my little home🥰❣️

I built an off grid cabin. Its no where near as awesome as your accomplishments. I did it with no power tools, no vehicle, no money (zero dollars) and by myself. I had a lot of people ridicule, doubt, steal and try to hinder my hard work but I stayed persistent and worked very hard. I look up to you and others to combine your wisdoms with my own. Thank you for giving me wisdoms that you don't even know you gave. Natural springs and power inverters are a blessing.

Jay & Jen are very genuine - Brooke, thank you for highlighting them and their journey. The sheer grit to build their own place - and it is a very cozy looking place. My wife and I, have a cabin, I suspect not too far from them in northern Michigan....we're not too far behind them in our "build"....our cabin existed but was not finished out. Right now we're blocked-out due to snow depth, last update I have from Jan 21 is 16 or more inches. Have no place to securely store snowmobiles to do the 4/10's of a mile to get down the two track and up the driveway. Nothing holds Jay & Jen back - they make do with what they have and actually make their off grid setting functional and nice.

Love to see people embrace the simpler things in life. I get so aggravated with people having to have all the high end things that are just things they don’t need to be happy. Our society is vastly messed up with all the fads & trends that go out of style. People don’t need granite countertops that’s only a porous stone that requires unnecessary maintenance! Love down to earth people.

Great video, much appreciated in January in Northern Michigan. Judging by the scenery, it looks like you are in the UP. I bought a dilapidated 20x18 tamarack log cabin on Whitefish Bay a few years back. Spent two years of replacing bottom logs, stripping logs, painting, pouring a concrete apron, all new plumbing and electrical plus new subfloor, flooring, tiled 4x5 bathroom and a new deck about 30 feet from the beach. Nothing quite as rewarding as spending your time being creative and leaving your mark on the world. Best of luck to you and Jen, your video is a work of art.

Love this. Definitely a dream of mine. Think I'm going to at least buy some land in the Appalachian mountains soon. May be 4 or 5 years before I build, but I'll have land to go camp on if nothing else, in the meantime. I lol'd at the double toilet paper. Beautiful home!! Only thing I wouldn't like is the loft.
