This video talks about overly friendly dogs in dog parks and how they can often cause problems and have no manners.
Many times an overly friendly dog will have anxiety issues.

You're proper dog-smart, sir! This is my dog. He is dog-fixated! Over-friendly, no manners - my fault. I just came back from a walk where I was dragging him uphill because another dog was behind us. Nightmare! We're new owners, so I'm taking this on board. Thanks! 🙂

THANK YOU this is the perspective I've been looking for. So many videos on how to deal with nervous or aggressive dogs, I have an overly confident, extremely friendly, 5 month old, *small* dog and he keeps jumping in bigger dogs faces, either getting ignored or starting to play with them, and then has to run away and hide when they play too hard/ accidentally crush him with their bigger bodies/ lose their patience and start growling initiating the lead walking routine immediately!

This was incredibly insightful! Thank you for the advise im going to try this with immediate effect. You are completely right, my dog goes on the same walk every day, and only plays with other puppies/ crazy overexcite-able dogs. So by taking my dog to other places, meeting new dogs and being in new surroundings might help her to calm down.

I found it was really useful to hold my lab on lead whilst he met every type of dog as well as age. Older dogs teach boundaries, baby dogs teach gentleness and cautious dogs teach wariness. They have social heirarchies which can do more in one session of play, than you can in a month.

This is exactly my problem and I knew it why before you said it. Because when I got Charlie as a puppy, I was told he wouldn't have a puppyhood due to my working so I would take him to the park, let him off the lead and let him socialise three times a day. Then as I have been researching and reading I have learned that dogs learn completely by association. I realised that he has associated being off the lead with going up to any dog and just playing and now the association and reward is so strong for him, reversing it will be hard. It will be hard for me to do lead walking with him because I want him to be happy and to play but maybe it is for the best in terms of the risk of him getting mauled and also having to speak to other unpleasant dog walkers. I thought I could do it with recall alone as last week he was coming back to me but this week it is like chicken means nothing to him and he started to ignore me again.

Thank you! This is my 6 month old greyhound. His recall started to slip last week after he ran over to a woman playing Chuck-it with her dog. He chased after the dog chasing the ball (too much fun) and I had to go and collect him and his long line. Yesterday I had to recall him 3 times after he ran over to greet an owner and his dog off trail in the woods. On the way home he was over excited. I've avoided lead walks while training obedience, tug and retrieve games in my fenced yard and didn't know they'd help. Thanks!

I’ve been searching and trying to find out what the heck is going on with my pup. So thank you! My dog Terry is a wonderful boy, he’s sweet, amazing with kids but is a pain in the butt to walk. He will and can walk nicely till another dog comes by or a person. He’s becoming less interested in people but oh Lordy Lordy another dog, cat, bunny, garbage bag, shadow... anything and everything sets him off into a tizzy. He barks, whines, jumps, it’s like he’s desperate to go see and play with another dog. He’s not aggressive at all. He’s not going to harm anyone, he just wants to play. BADLY. I made the mistake of wanting to socialize him from a puppy so I took him to an off leash dog park everyday and didn’t walk him... I thought walking dogs was more for exercise. So thank you and I hope I can get him to show what a lovely boy he is instead of making people afraid because of his overly excited behaviour.

OMG same thing happened with my pup. Had him in training since 4 months and he always did so well, he only used to stare at other dogs and he would sit like a good boy. Then i left on vacation for a week and a half and my fiance had work so he would drop him off a doggy day care where he got to run freely playing all day and ever since then he has not been the same and will get overly excited and anxious that he can’t go to other dogs. It’s so stressful.

I have this problem. MY dog just got bitten for harassing a staff. Also, he is way to friendly to people, and since he's very cute, people come up to him. At some point I started being unfriendly to people and stopping them from a distance, but then I got tired of it. It means that, because my dog pulls to be petted by people, I am totally subjected to my dog's and people's wills during walks.... so 4-5 times a day everyday, it is really annoying. Especially that there are some people I really don't want to talk to....... And some type of women (the baby/husband/pet snatcher type) think that because my dog is so friendly to them, they have a special connection with him.... lol, he also goes after drunks sitting on the benches!

Work on having the dog watch you and reward with treats when it’s looking at you and not the other dog.
@JeyesFluid
@JeyesFluid Жыл бұрын
Many dog trainers don't actually encourage siting the dog when encountering another dog for this exact reason, it causes the dogs tension and focus to increase even higher on the other dog unless professionally managed. Rather reward with treats keep dog on other side of your opposite other dog and walk Straight past working on getting the dogs focus on you acting as calm as you can and not acknowledging the other dog. Repetitively.

My Collie X is 9 months and in honesty is getting better. She use to lunge at every person walking past us but can now walk past people without this. Still working progress on dogs. She is over excitable to see dogs when close to her, just wanting to play. Try to keep her in sit as they pass. But we never introduced her to every single dog as a pup and we took her alot of places. Our main issue was having off leash dogs on the street running up to her as a pup with most owners nowhere in sight. Any advice on how to progress in ignoring dogs to point she will one day be safe enough to come off leash? She is very smart and just want best for her. Thank you

Iv just adopted a 4 year old staffie, and I when I got him they said he is overly excitable. I'm desperate for him to be sociable. But I have noticed the dogs don't seem bothered by him even when he barks. The RSPCA said he has great re-call, but my garden isn't realy that big, he has a bad pray recall. So I carn't, or rather I'm not a confident enough to let him run. I always let him sniff.

My dog is too friendly too. :/ im starting to hate it because too many people just walk up and start petting him and his excitement confirms to strangers that it’s okay. As his mom, I’ve started telling people to stop petting my dog. Even though he looks excited they need to stop. My fault for sure. I need to walk him in a more quiet area and less busy parks.

Can you make a video with examples good manners? And maybe bad manners. I was on leash with my 11mo Boston yesterday and I came across a medium sized dog, off lease in the distance (maybe 20 yards) standing absolutely still, focused intently on us. At first I thought it was a fallen tree branch because it was so still. Then it’s head went down like it was stalking us or something, but it was still unmoving. My dog had not noticed, so I immediately turned back and walked away, trying to be chipper, despite the dog that kept following us in the distance. A few minutes later I saw the owner that had fallen way behind. I am a new dog owner, so dog body language is still new to me, but that stillness is BAD, right?

Thanks for the tips. Have a question though my 9 month old rescue is overly friendly with all dogs, doesnt get the hint if dogs react to him jumping on them. Its starts from a distance, he gets fixated and gets into stalking mode. And can't seem to snap him out of it. Tried a pop on the lead, tried a splip lead, now using the julius k9 harness as he is very strong. I've also tried the sit, watch me command. And hes very food motivated.. but nothing works, not even dried sprats or liver in tuis care. Someone suggested to put him in doggy day care once a week, to desensetise him toother dogs. I need to know that im not investing time in doing the wrong thing 😑

Soo, my problem is that i dont like people/general public so i always walk my pup in places where we probably wont see anyone. And im the only human in the household, So he just doesnt see a lot of people or dogs, so when he DOES he loses his mind. And now that hes almost a year old.. hes officially stronger than me… 😶 i work on making him sit and practice restraint with folks and their dogs when we DO see them, but he pulls me and has no manners, just because MY hermit lifesyle isnt allowing him the experience to get any better at it 😢 a few friends of mine have dogs that he plays with sometimes, buts like you said, his only exposere has been with kind sweet dogs. My question is, would it benefit him to go to doggy daycare a couple times a week and burn off some of that cray cray excitability or would/ could it exasperate the problem…?

My dog is nearing 18 months old and whilst she has good recall, she will run over to other dogs when given the chance. I tend to take her for walks down farm tracks where you hardly see anyone and let her off lead to run around and have a sniff, but put her back on once I see a person because I just know there's a chance that she'll jump on them if she gets given any attention. When she's on the lead and other dogs start barking or reacting, she will do a high pitched bark and whine, but just runs over to any dog when off lead. She's even been around dogs that aren't friendly and have snapped at her, but she still doesn't understand that not all dogs are friendly. When she was a puppy, I used to take her to the park quite frequently and let her have a run around because it was the quickest and easiest way to burn off her energy and now she'll just chase other dogs around if she spots one in the distance and ignores me.

Unless you know what you're doing with protection dogs you don't event want a "little" aggression towards strangers. Especially in a breed with instincts like a rottie, guarding behaviours develop overtime and you have to know how to control that. I'd look to aim for neutrality with strangers and other dogs like Adam said in the video. Work on your dogs engagenent with you - hand feeding meals etc and then build up distractions slowly. If the dog breaks focus from you in anew area (totally natural) just take a step back.

If you build your relationship/bond, so your dog believes you're "family," he'll protect you. It doesn't matter how friendly he is. He'll sense the difference in you, when it's real. I have a 13 y/o lab/husky/BC mix. He's loves everyone, almost to a fault. Twice, in his life, have I felt like I was in danger. The first, he was off-leash, 20 feet away, maybe 1 year old. He felt my nervousness, about the man who turned toward us, after he watched me hobble across the street. He saw the guy, and his head lowered, hair went up, and growled. Stopped the guy in his tracks. The 2nd, we had someone beating on the door, at 2 am, when he was 6/7. I grabbed a little league bat, and turned him out the door. He ran the guy out of the yard, and stopped at the edge of the road. You don't have to teach them to protect you. They'll know the situation is real, and do what you want/need them to do. All you have to do, is make the know/feel/believe that they're family.

Let’s be honest most dog walkers are doing it for the money. Most 20 mins out the van and back in. A good business idea when done properly but also damaging to dogs if they aren’t mixed properly. Also lazy owners who don’t train send them out with walkers! I’ve learned many lessons in regards to how bad a business dog walking is!

my dog walks on a lead, right here it the word I use, sits , stays, even in practice with chicks, chickens, etc. I dont allow people to pet my dog, but if she has a vest on, its fine. Sher is 10 months old.If she sees a running cat she will see it an chase, but I can always say, No! come here. all it takes

I'm kind of pissed at the R+ yters that push socialization so hard and never warn about the dangers of letting your dogs play with strange dogs too often. We went the the park every day during months 4-8 and he is dog obsessive and his biggest challenge now and we have to train against all of those memories now.

I am kinda the same. Let him play in a dog park 2-4 times a week cause i thought he needed this for socializing! Now he fixates on every dog he sees while walking and he runs up to every dog he sees when he is off leash (we are training that now and perfecting the recall, i am using a marker everytime he fixates on a dog…its work, but at least hes not aggressively barking)

@@shriradhegovind1703 labradors aren't the dog breeds for that purpose mate , they generally fall in love with everyone , the are family dog breeds. If you really want a dog for a guarding purpose I would suggest you a German shepherd or a rottweiler. Even if you get an other dog please take care of your old dog as well😉

I hope the trainee doesn’t waste his time replying to you. Why would any mature person _want_ an _aggressive_ dog? If your post wasn’t a joke, reconsider your position. If the goal is to have a protection or deterrence dog, an aggressive dog is still the most foolish thing to desire for that. An aggressive dog will always be miserable, constantly anxious, compulsive, reckless, emotionally unstable, extremely disobedient to the owner/handler, and will certainly be overall mentally unhealthy. There’s a reason why police foundations reject aggressive dogs. Mentally stable adults don’t want an aggressive dog. If you’ve already changed your position on this, then great.
