Do You Need a Nissan Frontier or a Ford Maverick?

The new Nissan Frontier is one of the best all around pickup trucks you can buy right now, combining good looks, nice handling, solid options, and compelling value into a single package... However, the Ford Maverick gives you all of that and more in some cases. While it's not a true "truck" by some people's standards, it's actually all the truck most people probably need, if they're being honest with themselves, of course. If I needed a real off-roader, I wouldn't choose the Maverick, but for just about everything else, it's going to be the Ford Maverick for me. What do you think? Did I get it right? Or am I just kidding myself?! Let me know in the comments.

Have you seen Texas? Half of the bros out here drive f150s and never do any hauling. This was probably the best video explaining the pros and cons for the maverick. I was debating on these two cars and will probably get the maverick. I do most of our home renovations, and it would be nice to have some type of bed. The hauling of the maverick is just enough for me

You’re totally right, and I’ve made this point numerous times on the channel, especially in my Ford Lightning review: the vast (VAST!) majority of pickup trucks are driven by total posers who use 1% of their capabilities and then try to lecture others on why they should buy a pickup. Most people would be more than fine with something like a Maverick, and it costs (quite literally) half as much. Thanks for watching 🙏🏻

If you own a home a small or midsize pickup is almost a must have. This past weekend I used my Taco to bring 12 bands f pine bark and 2 piles of pine straws home in one trip. I take stuff to dumpster. My recommendation get a Tonneau cover too.

It certainly helps! The amount of times I laid down a tarp or cover to transport bags of mulch or bales of pinestraw in our Suburban.... And that was an old 2012 workhorse. I wouldn't dream of dropping all that dirty stuff into an $80k lux SUV now. A small little runabout workhorse would be a much better option, which is why I'm kinda smitten with the Maverick.

Ford Maverick owner here, paid MSRP (32K XLT Lux, Sunroof, 4K tow) off the lot in January (I suspect they had slow sales then.) It drives really smooth, I've used the bed a few times, but for the most part it's driven my 152 lb ass back and forth to work. Getting almost 25 MPG. It pretty much does everything I want, if I need a bigger bed I'll suck up to the guys who spent 60K for their Sams Club runs to help me out for a quick second, or rent the Lowes truck for 20 bucks.

The Maverick can do most of what people need a truck for. We have a farm in Northern Michigan and my wife as a 70 mile round trip commute daily so having a fuel efficient pickup is hand for grabbing random feed and stuff and putting on miles. The fact it has been sold out in the hybrid made it not available as an option recently but with snow tires I think it would have worked fine. 4wd doesn’t help you stop or turn… and good snow tires make a fwd car do excellent in the snow. That said we ended up getting a new Colorado Z71 Duramax and it’s great. 32-35mpg on her commute, can tow 7,600lbs, 4wd means it’s a no brainer in winter storms and we can use it for an overland rig when we don’t want to take our Sportsmobile van. Anyway, Duramax is going away and they are hard to find now but it’s a great rig.

Excellent points! I really like the GM Duramax vehicles (it was great in the Sierra AT4). I think we’ll see all of it phased out in favor of hybrids and plug-ins though, which is fine for those waiting before they adopt EVs.

I totally agree. The Ford Maverick can handle everyday family errands. It's a truck designed for family used. Unless you're a person who likes to go offroad everyday, all you really need is Maverick. Mind you the Maverick AWD can handle moderate offroad condition. Put a Falken AT tires on it and it can go almost anywhere. Let's be honest, how many times do we go offroading in a year? Probably once or twice. Put a lifting kit on it if you think it's too low for you and there you go it's as tall as Ford Ranger.

I bought a brand new frontier with a manual 6 speed in 2012. Even though you hate those lol and it lacked tech it drove every bit as good as the new Frontier. Yes I’ve driven the new ones. Same platform which is a great thing. It was a great truck that I used to tow the jet skis and a boat. Sadly it had some collision damage and my OCD made me get rid of it for a 13 Titan. Despite having my Titan and a 700HP Mustang I’m back to daily driving my 1995 Nissan pickup with a V6 and manual trans. I bet you can guess why!

Haha! I don’t blame you. I crapped on the last gen a lot, but it wasn’t necessarily bad. It just didn’t grab the pop culture cred the Tacoma has been able to leverage, and it lacked the style of the GM twins when they were updated (which are ironically now feeling very old). I’ll be curious to see if these light duty trucks get updated more frequently now that full size has gotten priced out of middle class. 🤷🏼‍♂️

I have a Maverick hybrid XLT that I ordered last July. According to Ford it should be delivered any day now! Total price out the door should be 25k! I'm exited as it will be my first truck. I have always had SUVs and sports cars. With the tail gate down you get 6.5 feet of bed space to use! Also at some point I will put on some AT 3 peak 245/65R17 tires! Should be good enough to get me through the winters in New England. I don't even remember the last time I used 4x4 on my current suv.

I’ve got a ford maverick and used it to tow a 17ft bass boat and hold my gear passengers etc. but I just get rid of the boat and got a 20ft xpress aluminum center console and not sure how the maverick will do towing it plus all my hunting/fishing gear and 3-4 people. My maverick doesn’t have fx4 only has tow package. Debating if it’s worth trading in for something that packs a little more punch (like the frontier or Colorado) do you think those trucks have more stopping power?
@jax1079
@jax1079 10 ай бұрын
Probably. If your hauling needs change significantly you can’t fight physics. While the Maverick is definitely an overachiever, a larger and more importantly heavier truck will better manage heavier loads because it has more leverage than the Maverick.

I ordered a Maverick in sept of 21- got it in March of 22. I was a trifle concerned about the short bed… and thought I might need to add a ladder rack on top… but so far, I haven’t found the need for one. I’ve hauled sheets of plywood and dozens of 2x4’, drywall, 1500 lbs of plaster, and even delivered a large format 3D printer and retrieved a six foot long sculpture of a bulldog milled in urethane foam. I also ordered a swing out storage box for the bed… that never came. But once I had the Mav, it turned out everything I thought I might need that box for easily fit in the underseat rear storage area, without taking up bed space. I don’t really need to go off-road… but should I need to haul anything that won’t fit in the bed I opted for the 4K towing package. The other thing I needed from a small pickup was the ability to haul around people, from my tiny grandsons all the way up to my 6 footer apprentices. And I can fit 5 full growed adults in the Mav without any discomfort. Add to that the the whole shebang, with the more powerfull engine, AWD and tow package still came in at only 31K and I could not be happier with my choice. The Maverick, brand new, with full warrantee, cost less than a used Tacoma with 50k miles on it. I like that its small and nimble and has 250 horses. I like that I’m NOT dragging around a bed I way bigger than I will ever need. I like that it has a simple aesthetic and I don’t have to climb up to get in it. As someone who vastly prefers my TT, and only bought a truck because I had genuine need for one, The Maverick was the ideal choice.

I like the Maverick, saw one in person but I find the 4.5ft bed severely limiting compared to 6.5ft in my little 2000 Frontier regular cab 4-cylinder 5-speed (during the era when Frontiers were actually mini-trucks like the early 90s D21 Hardbody before it). It'd be perfect upgrade for me if it were a regular cab (or really small extended cab) and the bed space increased to at least 6ft (that way it keeps the same length dimensions/wheelbase). That also would better fit the needs of commercial businesses/contractors who don't necessarily need to tow but can utilize extra bed space for business duties (pest control, parts warehouses, a pallet of items, glass and windows, toolboxes etc) while getting Corolla-like fuel economy.

I have a Maverick XL EB-FWD, and it's a great little "trucklett." First Ford, first truck. Once you drive a truck, you don't want to drive anything else. If I had to order the Maverick over again, I would have gotten the AWD/4K tow package. For a 2K towing capacity, the Maverick works just fine for what I need to to haul, a 1600lb converted cargo trailer. However, if I had to pull it every day I'd get a different truck. I'll pay my Maverick off and continue to use it as my work commuter, and buy the Frontier in another 3 years to use as my road-trip/hauler ride. Love the look of the new Frontiers! The Maverick is my "test run" vehicle to see if it's reliable. (Yes, I've made plenty of Ford jokes back in the day.) Nissan cars/SUVs...ehh. Don't care for them. The Maverick is the perfect truck for for people who need a truck for every day, general truck stuff. It also gives people on a normal human budget the opportunity to have a truck. That's the selling point for the Maverick over all these other trucks. Why pay 50 - 60 - 70 or 80 grand when you can get a decently tricked out Maverick for 34? The other benefit to the Maverick is the gas mileage. V6s generally get 18 or 19 mpg. a V8, 14 or 15. I have the 2.0 liter Ecoboost Maverick. I'm getting 24 MPG in town. I haven't had the chance for a long drive, but I'm guessing 32.

Good catch. Probably should have provided clarity. I think the AT4 purely from a ride standpoint is fantastic considering it’s a traditional truck frame. The advantage the Maverick has is in daily usability and handling, especially wheeling it around parking lots and navigating the suburbs. It’s actual ride quality might be slightly inferior to the AT4, but it’s overall experience as a unibody vehicle is easier to live with. Hopefully that provided more context. Thanks for pointing it out! 👍🏻

Both manufacturers need to get off their butts and build a truck for the consumer. Ford has the Maverick (Hybrid) and that suits the Costco crowd and will be good enough and suit it's purpose. Where Ford misses the boat is building a rugged "Off-Road" 4-wheeler that is lifted, skid plates, lockers and able to hit the trails without major modifications. So TWO trucks that suit either crowd. The miss the target (Just like the Honda Ridgeline for example) by adding a 0.5inch lift, different wheels, graphics package etc. and calling this a "Off-Road Truck". It's NOT. Nissan??? Nice truck and certainly more capable that the Maverick (Off road). More rugged... will last longer.... But??? Who cares about that for the Costco/Sam's Club crowd?? They want better mileage and ride quality for the grocery hauls. I suppose the point is.... ALL these manufactures are trying to cater to "Everyone" by offering a trim that sells. Please everyone and you please no one. Ford can build a lifted 4x4 with decent mileage and ground clearance. (They know how..."Raptor") But??? Slapping a few minor trim pieces just does not cut it!! (Look at their new Maverick Tremor package) It's an attempt to lure the true Nissan/Toyota Off Road crowd into this truck and it's a JOKE. Going 1/3 of the way gets you 1/3 of a truck.

Great points! I think the Maverick will definitely spur other manufacturers on to explore this niche with their similar small SUV platforms. Now that the new Colorado has dropped (and the new Ranger is upcoming), things will probably get more interesting. If the white EV truck in the background of Toyota's global EV announcement a few months back is a true electric Tacoma, Toyota could vault to the forefront with some interesting options. Lots to be excited about in this category. Thanks for watching!

I don’t think they are to buyers, though, especially not equipped like this. They’re built different, sure. But I think what makes the Maverick special is that it gives buyers nearly everything they could need and still most of what they want. Thanks for watching 🙏🏻

I need a compact truck like the Maverick and was set on buying one except I simply will never trust a Ford product. If Toyota or Nissan made a compact truck like the Maverick I would buy one in an instant. I don't care about unibody or body on frame or needing to tow 10K lbs or 300lbs of torque or offroading. I don't have space for a trailer to use with our old Chevy Tahoe. I want something with a bed and decent payload capacity ie a few hundred pounds more than my 115hp Honda Civic's 850lb payload capacity. But in terms of cost and quality the Frontier whether new or used is my only option left.

Stay tuned. Strong rumors that Toyota will debut a small pickup to compete with the Maverick at some point this year, which would be HUGE. I’ll definitely post about it here if and when it happens 👍🏻

Nissan is going to hate you . I decided on a used 4WD F150 over a new 4WD Frontier. The Frontier drives and handles traffic better, but the F150 has that trailer backup assist for my 3500 lb boat and trailer, and gets about the same gas mileage. If I didn't have 3 trailers to mess with, the Nissan is a great compromise between the Maverick and the F150. I still look at the Frontier wistfully at times, but I made the right choice. You have the greatest sense of humor and logic. Thought about being a therapist? Financial advisor?

Just purchased a 2022 Frontier S out the door for 27000 certified with the 6 ‘ bed 4x4. Ford dealerships wouldn’t even consider letting the hybrid 2wd go under 30,000 used. Im sorry Ford track record on turbos and hybrids is horrible and in the end will cost far more than my Frontier.

I bought my gfs grandpas 2014 mako skiff for literally nothing. Now I'm looking for a truck. I want the maverick which would be perfect in every point but I have to wait to order it and wait 6-12 months for it to be built which I'm kind of getting impatient with. The only thing I don't like about the frontier is the interior lacking tech.

Apples and oranges. Maverick is a unibody so its a disposable car with a truck bed. Body on frame is durable and reliable. Body on frame vehicles are built with more expensive but more reliable parts. Truck parts last longer then car parts. Its just a fact. Nothing wrong with the mav but you have to understand the huge disadvantages you are choosing. If you are only looking at price you are not choosing wisely. Up north is a huge problem for the mav if you are down south it'll be better. Ford mav is for pure abuse drive it like you stole its not a long term daily driver. Hell I'd buy one to completely abuse and only do oil changes and as soon as it breaks throw it on the trash bc it wont hold vaule justifying spending shop time and parts on it.

I think you're missing the point of the video. Most people vastly overestimate what they think they need a truck for when in reality their needs could be more than met by something like the Maverick. Truck parts don't just inherently "last longer" than car parts; otherwise there wouldn't be 30 year old Toyota Camrys just driving around as if nothing had changed, nor are they more expensive to engineer considering body on frame is a LESS sophisticated way to build a vehicle. Their reliability stems from their simplicity, but as manufacturers cram more and more tech into trucks due to buyer demands and expectations (largely driven by the entire point of the video, based on what people THINK they need and want a full sized truck for), these once bulletproof trucks are becoming less so. If people were honest with themselves about what they wanted in a vehicle, we might not have $100k full sized trucks with massaging seats that have never seen an ounce of dirt in their lives.

Actually, I've owned plenty of body on frame cars, and unibody cars, and the older model frames rotted out just as quickly if not faster than the unibody cars. Think back on how those classic 1960s - 1970s cars would rot. Much worse than the unibody imports like Hondas or Toyotas! I've replaced floor plates on my son's classic Jeep due to rot. Usual repair on those cars with frames was welding new footwells in the front seats due to rot. As to trucks, what Dodge pickup has not succumbed to "rust cancer" prematurely? Ford pickups as well! I own a '99 Grand Marquis currently, frame rotting under the trunk!! You might want to rethink your durability argument.

Not really. Maybe in terms of mechanicals and size, but not in intended use case if people are realistic about their needs. Maverick can do 90% of truck stuff that people think they need a larger truck for.

Hahaha! Oh the comments always flow heavy when a 2WD truck shows up. I kinda think they purposely try to avoid them in press fleets. I actually applaud Nissan for loaning out this spec knowing that a TON of people buy them this way. There's an honesty to it... even if it's scoffed at by many.

Nothing wrong with 2wd trucks. I’ve owned 7 trucks that were all 2wd. I don’t take them off road but I’ve definitely loaded the bed and towed many trailers. Towing is a weekly event for me.
