I'd take the frontier right now, but with ford,gm and toyota all bringing out their new mid size options all within 1-3 years. It'll make the frontier drastically outclassed. The big winner is consumers who will have all the choices

Even if they outclass the frontier completely, which I doubt they will, that's a plus for us because the Frontier will once again fill in the best mid size value truck again, as long as this new 3.8 is reliable.

In my opinion ; Frontier - all purpose , general use truck , checks most boxes ZR2 / Bison - pure offroader , diesel option , not so good for towing with suspension but front and rear lockers are great TRD Pro - great truck for resale , checks most boxes , Toyota fans will love but expensive and lacks refinement Tremor - Overland vehicle , great suspension , still maintains truck towing and payload capabilities , decent interior on the lariat , you can still do everything just not as crazy offroad

Well 10 months later it’s ZR-2 no idea when your going to get it cause the dealer has no idea when they’re going to get it Tremor/ ford trucks, no idea when your going to get it cause fords ordering process/ build and delivery times are all over the place Frontier, chances are your not going to find exactly what you want but you’ll be able to find something close enough that you’ll be satisfied Toyota, chances are your not going to find exactly the combination of options and colors you want but if your flexible your likely to find most of what your after but might have to compromise on minor things

When y’all talk about payload it would be beneficial to talk about payload of 4 door short bed, what most people buy. It’s not fair to talk max payload, between a Toyota and Ridgeline; max payload of a Tacoma is probably 4x2 access cab. Where the Ridgeline is the same for every model because they only offer one body/engine combo. I looked at a crew cab Tacoma TRD off road, 980 lbs of payload, I think a civic has more!

The 2021 FRT was my long awaited top choice. After test driving it in June '21, that classic cheap az, plastic, rattling, poor fit and finish interior deflated my interest almost immediately. Add to that a 4 cylinder Turbo charged engine that is already having issues and its a hard pass. I also have access to the Ford Z plan (purchase at dealer inv price, no haggling) and its still a big NO WAY. Waiting until next month to test drive the also long awaited NFP4X. If I like it, I'm buying my 1st Nissan (and 4x4) ever @ 53 yo while knowing from all my experience in watching and learning that it has everything I'll ever need. In a mid-size truck, which is the biggest selling point. I don't need a full size truck now or ever. 🤞🏼 Lol @ Chev-ee and GMC. I fart in their general direction. I used the TFL off road mid size truck video for making my decision. I went with the Ranger Tremor because I wanted something to help tow my "race car" but also be able to go on some trails for photo/video shoots. I didn't like how the Tacoma drove with its aggressive biting transmission. Something TFL doesn't mention, When you throw it into reverse. It feels like it bites hard and wants to go fast off the line but when you need the power to merge on the highway or go around slow traffic. It lacked power. The Ranger lacked onboard power in the bed but the fox suspension has made it a super comfortable and capable truck. The Motor while small has a ton of torque and power making it very easy to get going. So far been happy with the Tremor. Great video!

In all honesty, It really just comes down to what you think looks best because In the real world, no truck here is incapable of doing what the other can. Tweak the numbers all you want, an extra 20lbs of torque here or a slight bump in horsepower there, but none of these trucks are purpose built for heavy hauling or serious towing. And if you’re even considering towing anything over 5,000lbs you should really be buying a half ton at the least. For the vast majority of people any of these little trucks will likely meet your demands; Except the honda. Don’t get the Honda.

All three midsize trucks are decent vehicles, as each one performs better in certain applications, which is normal among different vehicles. I prefer the newer Nissan Frontier, because to me it seems like it's going to be a better pulling truck when it comes to towing in the mid-size category. I do not find the Tacoma stable at pulling larger trailers, the transmission in the Colorado isn't reliable, but when it is working properly it is the best pulling of the midsize.

Diesels are great, but they require a lot more maintenance in today's world. You have to change out like four extra filters and put DEF fluid in every so often to cut the emissions. You really don't see that many on the road. The GM twins use the same 3.6 you find in the big suv's. Toyota borrowed the Camry's six and Honda just chopped off the back end of the Pilot. The Gladiator reliability is terrible. I saw a new one last month being pulled up on a tow truck. This leaves the Ranger with one option. Great motor, easily upgradable with the turbo. You got excessive heat and it will hit you at the pump if you want more out of it. You can get closer to 300 on premium. Premium is not cheap.

I drove everything (except frontier of course) and settled on a fx4 ranger crew. I spent close to $700 on the Ford performance tune and completely changed the truck without sacrificing warranty coverage. Some dealers are north of $800 for the tune but still of all the options available on ANY mid sized truck this one should be on the top of everyone’s list. The performance upgrade is not only obviously noticeable on paper but it completely changes the drive and it does it in a god way. The 5.5 sec 0-60 time is cool and all but the 10 speed tuned is amazing. Yeah I tuned for 93 octane but honestly I’d do it again in a heartbeat. I picked the fx4 already after driving them all but had I driven it tuned like mine is now it honestly wouldn’t even have been a decision. For the record the Trd was 2nd on my list followed by the Colorado.

How’s the turning radius on the new frontier? I’ve heard you need a 100 yard wide runway to make a U turn with the previous gen.

My '10 & '14 Frontier have awful turn radius. I can definitely confirm that. I don't know about the new ones though!

I’ll echo Matthews sentiment. I’ve had mine since 2010, and there are two things I dislike on it. The turning radius is atrocious. It’s never gotten me in trouble, but a multipoint turn around a tight mountain trail corner is annoying. The second thing is the transmission when towing. There will be some hills where all it would need is a bit more gas and it’d pull fine, but when you give it that it shifts down a couple gears and revs high. It’s pretty annoying but less of a concern because I rarely pull anything with it.

As someone who is looking at getting into the midsize truck market I really appreciate this video! I’m leaning towards the Tacoma because of the residual value. A GMC or Chevy would be my least expensive option though. I’m open for any input from others! Thanks!

@@2011buddylee thanks for your input I appreciate it. I’m definitely a huge fan of the zr2 but I feel it may be out of my budget range. Not to mention I likely won’t use the truck to it’s full capability anyway.

@@rodrigotmb13 right, so where I’m at right now is I can get $3k off any canyon or Colorado model plus 0.99% finance while a Tacoma I doubt I’ll get anything less than msrp plus 3.49%. So is the residual value gain of a Toyota still worth it? It’s a tough choice for me

@@CmonsterFreak in that case I think in the long term you will end up paying more for the tacoma. From what I've heard about tacome owners complain about it's interior and how uncomfortable they are. Also, remember there are always exceptions, not all tacomas are that reliable. Are you the type of person that upgrades their vehicles every few years?
