My opinion on remapping the M140i, am I going to remap mine, and does the M140i actually need it!

As an ex owner, I say a tune isn't necessary. I spent money on springs, spacers, new dampers, LSD and a proper alignment and the rear still wasn't quite tamed. Great car but already has more than enough power.

After 75k miles and 5 years ownership, still happy being stock. I guess it depends if it's your only car. Also driving a much slower 4x4, when you then drive the M140i after a few days it's wow. But then driving a proper high performance car, and then the M140i, you realise it's really compromised and you could never spend the money making it something, it isn't and can never be. So I just enjoy it for what it is, a great daily, stock.

Not often I agree with most of what's said on a YT video but I do this time. I'm on my 3rd M140 and will never get rid of this one. Had a Golf 7.5 R but found it boring after a few months. My daughter (who's a very quick Police driver) has laid claim to the 140 at some point in the future. I specced it with every single extra knowing you wouldn't be able to get another RWD 6 pot hatch in the future. Took me way over the £40K "luxury" car tax thing but I've never regretted it when I see how much you've gotta pay BMW for a B58 engined car now. I went nearly same route as Reg. Went from adaptive to just changing springs to dumping adaptive and going full ACS springs and shocks. Swapped those for Bird's tuned Bilsteins and springs and now I'm pretty happy with it for a road car. ACS too low and stiff for an every day car IMO but brilliant on track. Also put rear body and strut brace on. Might try M3 lower arms at some point. Oh yeah, put an LSD on it as soon as I took delivery knowing what the M140 is like without one. Good tyres and lighter wheels make a difference as well and I run Mich PS5 now and Conti winters when it gets cold and slippy. Might try XHP at some point and, just like Reg, I'm 50:50 on a remap. The car still makes me grin on our Devon roads and lanes being small enough to straighten the bends and powerful enough to feel that diff working.

Hey Colin! I am glad you could relate to this video, and I agree.. you cannot get anything with a B58 in it new, without spending 45k+. The M140i is (not including the Supra), the lightest chassis you can get with the B58.. I think it’s such good value for money and I do agree with you re: Golf R. You can make really good progress with the M140i. Especially so on PS5’s, even when it’s wet and cold. It requires driver skill to keep it on the road, and I find that really rewarding. Thank you for the lovely comment. Keep on enjoying your M140i. I’ve got some really interesting videos that I am working on, so make sure you stick around for those. All the best, Road Reg

Just got one today and I love your take on it. I was so worried from every ones comments online that said handling / and just how it has a bad chassis / requires mods. I'm not taking it to race tracks and just daily driving and I feel its sooooo good and don't need to do anything

I’ve done suspension, lsd, subframe inserts and M4 control arms ahead of remapping the car to stage 1. It genuinely elevates the performance levels by a significant degree. Certainly not a car that needs extra power but often with cars more power for no extra weight is welcome. I recently flashed the car back to stock and it was still lovely but the added power adds another dimension to the drive.

I think you’ve hit the nail on the head Reg. Most people when buying a 140 would probably prefer an un mapped standard version as you just don’t know what your getting with modified vehicles unless the owner has been very particular and has detailed records of the mods. I’m really boring and kept mine totally standard as I feel if and when the time comes for it to go I’ll get a better price for it standard 🤷🏼‍♂️ You’ve had your 140 a while now, can I ask how many miles you’ve covered. Mines pretty much identical to yours but the five door version on a 68 plate. I’m on 36k ps I would like a Remus exhaust though 😂 Great videos Reg 👍

I’ve virtually got the exact same setup as you reg handling wise, Bilstein b8’s, motech springs and an Mperformance lsd. I’m stage 2, 460hp and honestly the car can handle it. As soon as I got the b8’s on it felt glued to the road. I’d say you only live once, send it🤣. If it comes to selling get a MHD or BM3 licence and you can flash back stock but I don’t think people are put off at all that they’d be buying a mapped one. As long as it’s looked after well

So this is a great video for me to relate to. I've had my M140 for 3 years now,. It came out of warranty and I started to mod it. Cosmetics, Bilstein B12 kit, MP LSD, underbody brace, I'm having the brakes done next month. But power wise it's stock. I think too many people go for power straightaway and don't address the car's achilles heel which is the handling. Like yourself I've done that. I think stock power is plenty, but I'm getting curious to see what I'm missing out on. So I will bite the bullet in a couple of months I think and go stage 1 with BM3 or MHD. That way at least I can remove them and put the car back to stock if I so choose to. I think what helps is I use mine for weekend driving. I've got an E46 318ci as a daily to take me to work and back. Jump in the 140 after that and my god it's so quick! Great video as well by the way :)

Another great vid Reg! Totally agree, yes and no 😂 If you do get it mapped, having used BM3 on B58 I'd recommend getting a proper map. Felt exactly the same with BM3 on S55. Proper map will run less boost, less heat, less knock and more consistent power. Seeing this vid has got me thinking about how my life is lacking a 1 series again 🤔

I'm on MHD stage 1 + XHP and its perfect! You can really customise the car to how you want with pops, sport, comfort ext.... OEM+ with some handling mods and I don't see why you'd want much more within budget! - I stupidly did power then handling. Very exiting way to experience near death on a daily basis.😂
@devriesetom

In the exact same spot, did all the handling mods. Debating to go for power now. My main reason would actually be to get the power curve more "exciting/racy". My previous M135i was slower but was actually more fun across the RPM's especially 5-7. The stock M140 gives you that push from the start but really drops off towards the end. Anyway I wouldn't be too concerned for resale values in the UK as I see a lot of tuned cars being sold and people actually looking for them specifically.

I used BM3 and applied a subtle torque limit of between 10% and 20% (greater limit in the lower gears) to give the car a slightly more linear delivery when mapped. It means there is a load of usuable torque but the motor doesn’t feel like it falls off after 5k.

Personally stage 2+ is an absolute beast vs stock! But then I’m the type of guy who couldn’t keep a car stock power😂 B58 is an amazing engine from factory but boy with a tune 🤪 very reliable too if taken care of! Great video as always 👌🏽

Honestly if you're in doubt about remapping it, give the MHD stage 1 a go. You can always remove it and go back to stock if it doesn't feel right (obviously keeping in mind you have to invest in the OBD adapter and the remap itself, which is ~500 euros in total). I was doubting too, but decided to remap my car in January and haven't regretted it a single bit so far. Comfort stays comfort, but in Sport and Sport+ the car turns into an absolute different beast. XHP is also something that is worth considering if you want to squeeze a little bit more out of your M140i.

I'd say yes to the remap. Imo 450 is where it should be so 150hp per litre just like many of the Rally inspired Japanese cars which were bulletproof at that power. Make sure it's a custom map on the rollers though.

A map and xhp gearbox tune makes a world of difference. Drivability increases because it makes so much more torque. MHD + XHP + TU Pump and Catted high flow DP is cheap to do and makes day and night difference to power and drivability and enjoyment, without sacrifice to reliability. I have Rims (8inch front 9inch rear) with wider tyres, Coil overs, M3 UCA/LCA, Rear subframe bushes, front and rear braces, pads, lines, OS Giken Clutch LSD plus all the above and the car is an absolute weapon. I do gymkhana in it and surprise things much more expensive. Still great to drive day to day. I say do it, you own a car for yourself.

My main worry would be compromising the reliability if it was remapped. There are a few stories of failed injectors and broken pistons around, and I wouldn't want to increase the chances of that happening, the pistons are only cast items after all. I know it is a small chance but if it happens it could be really expensive.

Injectors & piston failure more common on cars under 2018.
@simonh870
@simonh870 Жыл бұрын
@@marveysingh9592 That might just be because they are older. Some of the newer ones failing too. It seems more common on cars run on fuel with higher ethanol content. That would make sense as ethanol absorbs water, which encourages corrosion in the fuel system.

@@silvadadi Ah yes, I think I remember that. You were getting into a nice dark blue 530d with some friends* If not that time, I’m sure it’s there somewhere in my memory. A lot has happened since then. The M140i with that lovely engine and RWD is more rewarding than the 2.0 4 wheel drive cars in my opinion, plus it’s so smooth and sounds incredible. Don’t get me wrong, the Golf R is a fantastic car, and excels in all areas, it’s just really what you want from a car. Given the fact that there is no more rear wheel drive straight six engined 1 series being produced, I think now is a great time to get one. Times are a changing and the 1 series is such good value for money. Will you go to PS5’s after the super-sports or keep the OEM tyre? Thanks for watching my videos and supporting the channel.
