I never understand why Jordan insists on being such a Sophist in regards to the question of if God is real or not. It seems like there are many ways one could pose the question to get at the root of what people are asking. For example, one could ask “is God real in the sense that he has his own thoughts that no one knows about?”. I have to believe Jordan knows exactly what people mean when they ask if God is real, and it is something more like this question. Just answer the question and be brave enough to handle how your audience is going to react either way. “I don’t know” is also a fine answer, but stop pretending like you have no idea what people are asking or as if the questions is meaningless.

There is a story of a buddha figure answering this question much more simply while at the same directing the questioners to seek the answer(s) for themselves... When asked twice by two different people "does god exist?" he answered yes to the first and no to the second... leaving them both bewildered and confused and more importantly wishing to seek the summit of knowledge themselves that such contradicting answers could be conceived. A person unable to apprehend reality transcendent of dualistic thinking cannot apprehend reality itself. The point being-why ask whether something within the conscious context of a false reality is indeed real? At this point it doesn't matter. What matters is experiential self-knowledge to its end. Reality shines forth by its own accord in our individual consciousness in its own time. The right effort or attention is needed for this. "Who am I?" is the question to be genuinely contemplating. That is the road to the truth, that is the road to the "real."
@BrianHoldsworth
@BrianHoldsworth 21 күн бұрын
The question "What is real?" presupposes reality. If you're going to say "What is...?" you're assuming that the "is" of the question - the fact of it having _being_ is already understood and not dependent on further elaboration. Some things are *_self-evident_* and if we don't start by admitting that, then we shouldn't bother to try to address anything of a factual nature. To call into question reality or ontology is to employ an irrational degree of skepticism about the content of our thoughts. When Dr. Peterson succumbs to that kind of deconstruction, he ends up sounding a lot like the postmoderns he tends to decry.

@@MakingItwithDee I do like Jordan. He is a force for good in this world.... but, and now I am psychoanalysing a psychiatrist, his defence mechanism is his intellect. I imagine if he read this comment, which I doubt he would, his brain would automatically create a witty rebuttal and take down. I see a man full of fear and his intellect is what protects him. Fear of letting go and letting God. Jordans classic response to belief in God is something akin to "Who dares say that they believe in God ? because if you truly believed you would act like it. " This is not a direct quote but a janky summary... Anyway, the point is belief in God requires a level of surrender, vulnerability and humility that Jordans intellect doesn't permit him to have. But his wife has it in spades and he knows it! I wonder what would happen if Jordan tru;ly got down on his knees and said " Right, here I am, if you are there God then I surrender myself to you'. Speaking as a christian myself, never understood this "heart" thing. Sounds like a another case of the hyper-emotionalism that is found is american protestantism. We live in a time period where you can't merely "believe by heart" (whatever that exactly means). That's a luxury we do not have anymore. We live in a secularized world where religion is now a separate domain (vaguely anyway). You have to actually know what you believe and why, everything must be spelled out and deliberate. That’s funny. I think in a way you’re right, but I think he also goes deeper than that. He seems to look at the universe as a forum for all, including what we call the supernatural. We just call it supernatural because we aren’t in a position to judge what is natural and what isn’t on the scale that a divine consciousness. Not sure I made any sense there, but I really do enjoy Jordan’s attempt to look at things purely from a grounded standpoint and work from there to comprehend the patterns and characteristics of reality. It makes things a lot easier for me to accept versus a bunch of touchy-feely talk.

Jordan believes in ancient mythological stories which he believes are spiritually inspired with deep meaning for humans. This is what I believe, he believes in a nutshell. I don't believe he believes in the 'literal' Bible stories as presented, otherwise, he would say so. He very carefully chooses his words because I believe that he believes FAITH is really important for humanity. After all, HOPE is all some people really have, so he can't just say what I said without offending folks that follow him. He wants the best for humanity at the end of the day. Ancient mythological writing has some of the best wisdom that stands the test of time, so I understand why he loves it.

Genesis 6 is the scriptural basis for those who believe that many of the ancient mythological stories were based on real events. Being Predaluvian, and although they have disappeared, these Mighty men of yore: have been given their place in history by the Holy Scripture no less. It appears that Certain extra rules were instituted, and punishment applied to offenders, as this has not occurred since the flood. It is a facinating study, and provides avenues for answers to questions that were previously gordian knots. The fact that Norse, Greek, and Roman mythology, all had similar stories but different names, gives one: reason to consider what could possibly be the catalyst for such coincidences

«Sin is not ended by multiplying words, but the prudent hold their tongues.» ‭‭Proverbs‬ ‭10‬:‭19‬ ‭NIV‬‬ So many words. He (Jordan) is afraid of speaking plainly and straight forward, maybe afraid of being labeled. That’s understandable, but also a sign that he might not have been born again and renewed and regenerated by the Holy Spirit. The word of God says: «And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.» ‭‭Hebrews‬ ‭11‬:‭6‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Amen! Dr. Peterson is so near the truth I think part of it is he has bought the lie of works based salvation. Ephesians 2: 8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: 9 Not of works, lest any man should boast. Faith first why? Faith is a word that postmodernism has redefined. When you look at what Faith used to mean it makes more sense. The english word Faith comes from the Latin word Fidelis translated means loyal, trustworthy, truthful. Loyal trust doesn't mean anything if it isn't found in the truth! John 8:32 the truth shall make you free This is why faith comes first. If your loyal trustful works are done blindly it is pride the cardinal sin. If your loyal trustful works are done in truth it is true faith. This is what Protestants mean when they say saving faith and not of works because saving faith: (loyal trust to the truth) produces works. And most importantly if faith:(loyal trust to the truth) comes first it insures that your works done in the right direction! Protestants absolutely believe in works just not before faith the order matters!

I absolutely love Jordan Peterson so don't get me wrong here when I criticize, but the same way this question bothers JP is the way his response to this question bothers me. I believe there is a time to not answer a question and to make a point, and there is a time to just answer what people mean by the question. Maybe there is a better way to formulate the question, but to get the question formulated perfectly would be difficult for the average person. I believe JP knows what people mean when they ask this question, but he seems to refuse to answer the question that is intended to get at. I think someone needs to push him on this, someone with an intelligence that matches his so he can be challenged to ask himself this question honestly. Perhaps the question should be formed like this... Do you believe the being which Christian's describe as God exists? In other words, is "that which nothing greater can be found" exists in such a way that God is cognizant, personal, and intentional, thus creating and governing the universe in an intelligent, ordered and good manner such that all things truly will work out to his inevitable, good purposes. Another way for him to face this is he could read Anselm's writings in Prosologion and Monologion and ask, do I agree with him?

Real means: Within reality. He is without reality. Meaning on the outside of all of it. So He is definitionally not "real" even though He exists. Jesus is Real. And is the Son of the Father, the Word made Flesh. But a subtler understanding of the trinity means that even though Jesus Is God made Flesh. And He and the Father are One, that does not mean THE FATHER in all of HIS GLORY is "Real". Because THE FATHER has never lighted on the Earth or within his 3D spacetime other than in the flesh of the Son, or through Angels, whos bodies are subtle (literally hallucination that is what subtle body means and hallucinations aren't "real" either).

I heard someone recently ask Jordan how you get to the Kingdom of God, and he couldn't answer it. Folks, Jordan has not believed the gospel message according to the scriptures yet, he is not born again. What he is doing is pschoanalyzing the scriptures by the ideas of mankind. He is actually misinterpreting the bible a lot. The veil still remains on His face and he can't see unless Jesus removes that veil. Don't rely upon Him for biblical advice. He does not have the Holy Spirit within Him. Yes, he is a brilliant man, but the scriptures are spiritually discerned according to the scriptures. You need to have "been born" again by God's power and given the Holy Spirit to be able to see properly. Jordan could not answer how you get to heaven, he stumbled and changed the subject. He isn't a believer at this moment, he is following an empty religion, like a lot were doing in the time Jesus walked the earth, and he corrected them a lot about it. Jesus told Nicodemus that you cannot enter the Kingdom of God, unless you are "born again". Jordan isn't, so it isn't wise to take advice from him on the bible.

I prayed to god to be the wisest man on earth. Knowing I was not going to be the wisest. My inner voice told me to focus on reality. To make a long story short hardships and obstacles in life are growth opportunities. I would love to talk to you, Jordan Peterson. You are one of the people that helped me through this journey. But with all the comments pouring in, My comments probably will be buried.

Lmao that was one of the funniest, raw reactions / Russell Brand moments I’ve ever witnessed.. *JBP goes on epic rant* with 17 profound points nested within 47 other profound subpoints, and then the conversation turns to Russel and, probably feeling the enormity of what JBP just communicated starts his response with a very raw, very honest, terrified-with-a-pinch-of-exhilaration, while face to face with bloody modern day Socrates.. *Good God..* 😂🤣 5:43 That’s probably how Socrates’ students felt/reacted back in antiquity when Socrates would drop some just naasty, redaankulous, str8-up-atomic wisdom bombs during lunch hour, then turn to young Atticus while he dips his bread in his oil, and feeling the enormity of what Socrates just laid out is like bruh.. *Good God* 👀😶🤣

Sacrifice also has to do with wanting what is good for the other (as Bishop Barron talk about). Truly feeling joy and happiness from the joy, happiness, and well being of others even if it means sacrifice /inconvenience/difficulty for oneself.

Dearest Dr. Peterson, it just came to me listening to this podcast, that you are an iconoclast. When you say “It depends on what you mean by God” and “real” I think what you are saying is, There are many many many false gods in the world. Our Lord told us that many should come in His name saying, I am Christ, and would deceive many. And Lewis writes that we often place our ideas and our perceptions and our thoughts in place of God, and we worship them instead of God. He wrote, “I need Christ, not my idea of Him.” And you’re trying to get people to destroy those idols and know God. And you’re just as popular as any iconoclast is. Puzzling how this works because one of your closest friends is an icon carver but, there it is. As the space hippies said in a very old episode of classic Trek, “I reach.” Love always from Ruth Anne

Yes god is to cope with mortality and theres prob something in human nature to create an hierarchy to abide to by establishing god as the highest being to that hierarchy. This creates cooperation and strong in-group mentality that allows for better competition vs other tribes.

The thing being sidestepped here (the question at the end) is requiring if a belief in a personal God. How can one omnipotent and omniscient want anything through which a contract can be made? The only thing an omnipotent being can't control, and therefore above all else value, is that which He willingly refuses to control: free will.

JP & Russell, have either of you read Henery Drummond's "Greatest Thing in the World"? It disects the Apostle Paul's letter to the Correnthians, specifically 1st Correnthians 13. Everyones heard it, many times at weddings, it is the dissecting & exsplaining of that passage within the Bible that exsplains Love. And in turn God.
