Thanks for another great tech tip-Dimple Motor Oil Magnets provide a high quality product. Certain oil filters imbed a magnet into the intake of the oil filter as well-this removes the need to attach the Super Black Hole magnets on the outside of the oil filter housing.

Doc, nice video on these little 'extras' available for our machines. I've been using the drain plugs and the 'black hole' magnets for several years. Some people complain about their cost, but face it, you'll spend money like that, and more, on chrome goodies for your ride that won't give you peace of mind like these little items. Thank you, sir!!!

Hello Mr. Harley, can you help? I have a 74 AMF Super Glide I restored that sat for 45 years in a garage. The mechanical repairs were performed by an independent custom Harley shop. We replaced the dry clutch with a wet clutch to keep the engine oil in the engine. I ask what I think is a dumb question. Is the primary chain oil level the same as in your other videos? I ask only because of the clutch being converted from a dry clutch. Thanks for your time!
@LowCountryHarleyDavidsonАй бұрын
You have gone down a path I have not visited in a while. Your primary cover was designed for the dry clutch. So too much room for oil. But a wet clutch does survive with oil. A minimum of oil to reach the bottom of the clutch basket. Double check the conversion manufacturer’s instructions….Doc
@richardnadeau8932Ай бұрын
@@LowCountryHarleyDavidson WOW! Thank you for responding so quickly. The primary cover was replaced as well because it was badly pitted. It has been functioning flawlessly for a 1000 miles. I removed the derby cover to check the oil level and wanted to make sure of the proper level. I’ll check as you recommended. Thanks again for your time!

Hey Doc. Just bought a new 2024 Street Glide. Was told to not use the cruise control during the break in miles. Does this sound right? What’s the reason for this?
@LowCountryHarleyDavidsonАй бұрын
A possible reason. The old theory of keeping a new motor at a constant RPM will create a “sweet Spot” where the rings wear and seal the best. So the suggestion is to vary the motor RPM during the “ break in” time/ mileage…..Doc

I need help. I have a 2003 electra glide. Riding around all day fine. It randomly lost all electronic power. I replace the battery because the part store said it was bad. It ran fine for a day and now it lost all power again. I checked the grounds, checked the battery, stator and rectifier are charging. Now it’s intermittent power. Any help would be appreciated. I think it may be the ignition key switch or the circuit breaker next to the battery.

My take. Forget the oil magnet plug. Even a bad filter catches particles to tiny microns. However! Do get a Primary magnet plug. The Primary has no filter and those aftermarket plugs visibly work better.

Hello Doc Harley. I'd be grateful for some guidance. Ive recently become a service writer for my HD Dealer. Jubilation! Ive been a Service Manager,MstrTech for vintage, classic BMWs. The 2018 Deluxe brought me back. I'd welcome any guidance on how to be the Best Servjce Writer I can be. Your vudeos have been a huge help with knowing my M8. Its a Beast with a 30/30 cam, stock xhaust.
@LowCountryHarleyDavidson2 ай бұрын
Welcome. A Service Writer is a challenging job. Set expectations with a customer. Ask questions. A lot of questions. The more information the less time in diagnosing and faster repair. Remember YOU are not there to fix or repair the Harley. You are the most important part of information gathering. At the last 1/2 of the day check on every techs progress so when the phone call comes ( and it will) you can answer the questions. Do not fall back on, “ that’s not my customer” you represent the shop. Don’t take the comments from people personally. It is hard to take the news that their bike is growing old and cost. Defend and trust your techs….Doc

Easy on Doc Harley he is just trying to help and inform riders. With that being said the harley or aftermarket paper oil filters with a bypass are an area that is of concern. Putting high strength magnets on a thin walled oil filter housing can only help in trapping metal contaminates and preventing them from working there way back into the motor. I would go a step further. I would install a PC cleanable micro mesh filter that has a built in magnet on filter element housing. Yes it is more expensive but you get what you pay for. This filter is an absolute 35 micron filter. Where as the stock replacement paper filter is an average 5 micron with as high as 100 microns. If you start your bike after it has sat throughout the winter months and then you get ready to ride it the water condensation in the oil will clog the paper oil filter then what happens the oil filter goes into bypass and you have no filtration until the water evaporates at 212 degrees F. Second being when your cruising at high rpm the stock filter will not be able to filter the oil so the oil pressure will rise causing the filter to go into bypass. You never know when this takes place the bypass filter valve just opens. This is caused by a differential pressure across the filter element. The filter mfgs know this is going to happen that is why they install the filter bypass. I work in aviation and I can tell you there are no paper filter elements used. They want an absolute filtration system not an average. Your bike your call. I use the PC cleanable filters on my 1988 Heritage and my 2015 street glide. I call it preventative maintenance. There is no bypass valve on the PC cleanable filter set up as it will filter 35 microns and up. Just passing on info do not take my word do your own research and become an educated motorcycle owner.

@@DevilDog59 John, thank you for your information. I was working as a motorcycle technician, mostly on Ducatis. I got the experience that standard oilfilters and fresh oil guarantees you a long lasting engine live. Our customers who are using their bikes on the race track had to change the oil frequently. This is why I would spend my money for fresh oil and frequntly changes. Anyhow, thank for your information.

@@DevilDog59 I have a Sportster 1200 custom 2005. What kind of filter should I use for it? I’m thinking too about switching to Rotella t-4 15 w 40. Do you see a problem with that idea? It’s $16 per 5 Qts. I could change every 2-3 months at that price
@DevilDog592 ай бұрын
@@leesire I am sure that PC has a cleanable mesh filter for your bike. As far as motor oil for your bike I would use a full synthetic 20-50 motor oil that is designed for air cooled motorcycles and meets the JASO standard at a minimum as you want to make sure it does not break down from heat heat cycles on an air cooled only harley and they have anti forming additives. I do not use Harley 20W-50 full synthetic oil due to the fact that they do not list that it complies with Any standards they get the oil from the cheapest bidder and have their label attached to it they are only concerned with getting the bike out of the warranty period. In my opinion if it meets the standards display it, but they don’t. The oil and filter are the life’s blood of keeping your engine operational for a long time. I would not cut corners in this area. But this is just my opinion, your bike your call.
