Dock fishing from a boat for our FISH - First sheepshead!
As abundant as they may seem, our local fishery (the Florida Keys & SouthEast Florida) is not home to the sheepshead! During our trip to Central Florida and Tampa we quickly made plans to experience fishing for these zebra striped fish. These saltwater dock dwelling species love structure and the creatures that grow on them. Barnacles and shellfish are part of the sheepshead diet making perfect use for their CRAZY looking HUMAN-LIKE teeth (except for those rows of molars)!

Watching you release those fish with your hands in the water reminded me of being on Islamorada last winter. I went out with a guide near the Everglades. He told me NOT to put my hands in the water. It’s very muddy and dark. Later I hooked a snook and had it to the boat when a bull shark came tearing out from under the boat and tried to eat the fish. Good shark. Smart shark. Signed, Two-handed Tom

My grandfather used to use his paddle to scrape the barnacles and oysters off of the bridge and fender pilings to chum up the sheepies. Our best bait was fiddler crabs and mom would turn those flaky white fillets into a fine meal. Keep up the good work!

For people who don't know common practices when chartering boats, when you ladies are fishing with other captains and when people charter with you, what is the appropriate tip amount per person and is it based off of charter cost? Also, when you catch extra fish more than you each eat within 1-2 days do you share with Captain and Mates? Just want to get this answered and public so others can know for their charters in the future so they take care of the crew appropriately! Alot of people who use services of an industry they don't always use may not know the correct way to settle up at the end of their wonderful day on the water. Thanks ladies.

I'm a fishing guide on the Fraser River near the west coast of Canada, the company I'm with offers world class guided jet boat sturgeon and salmon trips. An 8 hour trip generally means the guide or captain actually works 10-12 hours when you include the trip prep and bait prep, fueling, trailering and gear maintenance. For me its a side hustle, I have a great job in construction so I mostly do it for the passion and love of fishing and I like nothing more than to share that passion with others. It's not always easy work but it can be so rewarding, just ask @galeforcetwins I'm sure they would agree. Seeing the smile on kid's faces as they catch their first fish or watching grown men struggle to land huge sturgeon that outweigh them. I think that tips should be similar in percentage to what would be given for fine dining. If you had a good time and the guide worked hard to offer you a trip of a lifetime they should be honoured with a suitable gratuity. It's not always about how many fish were brought to the boat either, we want our clients to catch fish even more than they do. Some days the fish just don't bite much, other days it's so good you cant keep them off. I've had trips where everything worked out great and the client were very happy when they left and no tip. I've had other days when fishing was really tough but they knew I was working hard and doing all I could do to put them on fish so they still tipped really nicely. To put it to a dollar figure on it, because I think that's kind of what you're asking, I've had tips ranging from zero to $20 to $450 and everything in between for a day's fishing but a good average is probably $100. If you're out on a larger boat with a captain and a couple crew it should be more than if it's a single guide like myself. That's if you charter the whole boat. If it's a bunch of people separately on a larger trip then each should be giving a percentage of what they are paying for their part of the trip. I hope that me sharing my perspective helped on this.

As an Australian the whole tipping thing is strange to us. We don't tip over here. The cost of the charter covers the higher wages that we have here.
@cody2kirk2000
@cody2kirk2000 3 жыл бұрын
@@daelrance6866 yea I agree with that statement. I caddie over here in the US and we average about $60 per bag and usually carry 2 bags an 18 hole round and Australian and other cultures that don't usually tip come here and bring their culture with them here but we have it over here and usually is factored into the pay that the service employee per hour or contractor in my case makes per job. That's why I think its important for that information to be out there for people to find because a lot of the time that people don't tip its cause they just don't know.

Tipping is a touchy subject. To Insure Prompt Service. Other countries besides Australia that consider tipping to be rude are Japan, Thailand, New Zealand, South Korea, France, Italy, Spain, Germany, among others. When I lived in Europe, you were expected to round up your total to the next Euro, Franc, Mark, Pound, Lire, etc, and that was it. I always tip large when someone goes above and beyond the expected service, but it seems that everyone in the US expects to be tipped all the time regardless of the quality of service and or the product provided. In other words, I think it's something to be earned, and if it's for a service provided, could vary largely in amount based on numerous circumstances. If the Captain (guide) is also owner of the charter business, should they be tipped as well? I've chartered many fishing charters over the years, and almost more than any industry, SO much depends on the work ethic and attitudes of the crew. But no, after paying anywhere from a hefty $500 to $1000 already for a half or full day of fishing, I don't believe there is one set amount of how much a guide should be tipped. BTW, the argument could also be made, should they be tipped at all? For example, if you pay $600 for an airline ticket from Fort Lauderdale to Islip, Long Island for a day of clamming on the Great South Bay, do you tip the gate agent for helping you with your bags? Do you tip the flight attendants for serving you a drink? Do you tip the Captain for flying around the thunderstorms and doing a nice landing? Or are they just doing their jobs? Are they just doing what's expected of them? And if so, how does that differ from the fish charter business? To muddy the waters even more, two great companies I frequent are Uber and Publix, both of them ask you not to tip. Like I said, tipping is a touchy subject.

My first sheepshead was 23.75" without the tail pinched. I've been hooked on fishing for them ever since. They're my favorite fish to target in the summer. They are in the porgy family so that comparison was spot on. And they do kind of taste like crab, so that comparison to tilefish was on point too

They catch 15 pounders 5-10 miles off Savannah. fiddler crabs. There used to be a fish store downtown that sold sheep head to one of his workers cut his fingers off cleaning them and he would not buy or sell any more sheep head. They hard scales.
