Yesterday I saw a runner with a plantar plate sprain. She wanted to know if stretching the toe would help the plantar plate ligament heal faster.
Plantar plate sprains happen because the plantar plate ligament gets overstretched, and strained.
When you get a plantar plate injury, the fastest way to allow healing is to reduce the stress and strain on that injured ligament.
If you’re thinking about whether or not to stretch the toe or do something to try to help the condition improve faster, you really need to think about the mechanics that are actually involved when you have a plantar plate injury.

Thanks for great content ! My physio would have me strech my big toe like crazy before MRI diagnostic complete tear of the plantar plate big toe . I guess she will have to change our game plan.. Is cycling safe for that kind of injury ? Thanks

Hello Vincent, Thank you for watching and commenting. I am glad you found it helpful. Depends. You have to make sure you are not stressing or straining the ligament when you cycle. Just curious...what is it you don't fully understand about the condition, (or your circumstances) that you need to understand to make that decision about whether or now it is safe right now in your particular case and stage of recovery?
