If you didn't watch the whole series, its important to know the relationship between Lucy and Dr. Romano (the surgeon who tried to save her at the end). Dr. Romano was extremely cold, harsh, amd abrasive. He didn't form bonds with colleagues and was an all around unlikeable person. But he respected Lucy because she stood up to him without fear while advocation for a patient. That was something noone else did, and he respected her for it. He really cared about her and that's why he took it so hard when he couldn't save her. The writers did a few scenes that showed his humanity and this was one of them

So the episode before this one answers a lot of your questions. The patient presented with a headache and they ruled out meningitis but the med student noticed that he seemed paranoid and after talking to him, she told the resident that she thought he was schizophrenic. She ordered a psych consult and while waiting for it, the patient snuck into the doctor’s lounge and stole the knife for the cake. The viewers don’t see him stab the med student but we can piece together what happened. Later, the resident goes to check on the patient and when he walks into the room, the patient sneaks up from behind him and stabs him. When he collapses, he sees the med student lying on the other side of the bed, covered in blood.

It takes a long time for Carter to come back from this. Between the mental trauma and severe pain, he becomes addicted to opioids and we get to watch his death spiral. Fortunately his friends see it too and in an emotional episode where Carter slugs Benton and breaks down, he finally goes into rehab and comes back wiser than ever.

Considering the show was created by Michael Crighton (who graduated from Harvard medical) with 2 medical advisors on set to help with script writing and a lot of the background staff were real nurses, I'd expect the show to be pretty accurate. Obviously not 100% since the drama is story line driven.

Dr. Romano, the surgeon who tried to save Lucy had a history with her. He was known to be extremely abrasive to everyone and really had no friends. Earlierr in the series, Lucy came up with an idea to save a patient, and Romano was the only one who could do the procedure. Lucy called him at home on his vacation and he refused to come in. Shw showed up at his house and continued to plead with him. She wasn't afraid of him, and he respected her for that. He let her assist with the procedure.

Great reaction to one of the saddest episodes of the series! I just came across this while looking for reactions for this show. This is actually one of the only reaction videos that I've seen for "ER". No matter how many times I watch this episode, from the moment that Carter and Lucy are taken into the trauma rooms my emotions are all over the place throughout the rest of the episode. One of the best scenes is when Benton is rushing down the stairs after getting the news, and he bumps into that cop. His focus was getting to Carter. John Carter was Benton's med student since the first episode, and was Benton's intern for him for seasons 1 thru most of 3. They had one of the best friendships. It's probably already been mentioned already but the reason why Dr. Romano tried so hard to save Lucy and then reacted the way he did to her death was because she earned so much respect from him. Two or three episodes before this one, Lucy went to Romano's house, on Christmas, and stood up to him for a patient that needed a new heart. 15:32 You talked about Carter having survivors guilt. He really goes through a lot for the rest of this season(season 6). The episodes "Such Sweet Sorrow" and "May Day" of season 6 really touch on what he went through. Again, thanks for the reaction video. And giving your medical knowledge. It's amazing how accurate this show is. Feel free to react to some more episodes of "ER" or the whole series, and provide your knowledge. I know I would watch, comment, and like all of them. 😊

@@JessTheMD I mentioned the two episodes of "ER", Such Sweet Sorrow and May Day, in my comments. Those two episodes not only deal with what Dr. Carter was going through after the attack, but it also has some great medical moments in them as well. Those are the last two episodes of season 6. The very first episode of "ER" might be fun for you to watch as well. 😊 If there's any other really good "ER" or "House MD" episodes that I think that you might like, I'll send them your way. Paul (the patient) was in the ER first presenting with some mild headaches and memory loss. He deteriorated over a few hours and started the beginnings of a mental episode after vomiting. Paul was left with the medical student (Lucy) with an order of monitoring and wait for Psych eval. Paul saw something and broke down completely stabbing Lucy and waited in the dark to stab John. He ran like a deer outside seeing who knows what and was captured in the middle of traffic by police and EMTs and brought back into the ER in full psychosis. He was medically checked and finally restrained with Psych finally seeing him, Paul was transferred to a psychiatric facility and was on supervised release when we see him again. The thing is the actor who played Paul actually went on to play one of the best leads on prime time television. He would become Charlie Epps the Math genius and professor at UC also a math consultant for the LA FBI branch under his brother Don in the show Num3ers.

I didn't watch the whole run of ER but that one Dr who said "Don't worry we've put too much into your training to lose you now," that might have even been his way of showing love. Some context from a lifelong fan of ER (and medical shows in general as I grew up in and out of hospitals). ER was created by Michael Crichten, the author of Jurassic Park, who went to med school before becoming a writer. ER is often seen even today as one of the most accurate shows out there. The older white doctor is an older attending, while the black doctor (Benton) is a surgical attending who was mentoring Carter (the guy who was stabbed), while Benton was a doctor with quite an attitude he does occasionally show he cares as he feels responsible for him. Lucy, the female doctor was a resident who Carter was mentoring. This was a shocker episode when it aired with many voicing displeasure at the characters death. The story would also have a profound effect on Carter that was long lasting.

@@JessTheMDno problem, I highly recommend ER just from the medical standpoint. The human drama is good too, but it's amazing how even without a medical degree how many med terms I understood growing up because I heard it in real life. To a layman like me, ER always had an air of authenticity...although I hadn't the first clue whether or not that impression was truly earned. Next to that, I’d love to see the following: The pilot “24 hours” (1/1) because it literally "sets the tone" and it would be a great possibility to compare this with your own beginnings. “Exodus” (4/15) which shows a young doctor stepping up to take charge and really earning his stripes. And I’d like a reaction to “Lockdown” (8/22) - it’s much later in the series but I watched it again a few years ago because of the Covid situation. First and foremost great review. I love how you broke down the medical info. And somebody who was born 6 weeks early and I had a stroke at birth resulting in cerebral palsy. I also had a lot of stomach issues growing up. I had a I don't know if my talk to text will spell this quickly so please work with me. Nissen stomach surgery for acid reflux at one point in my life I had 53 hospitals days in 2 and 1/2 years because of stomach issues. When I was 14 I had back surgery for scoliosis. During the recovery process I got into ER and it became my favorite show. I've gravitated toward medical shows ever since. I bought the show and literally watch it when it's my go-to show when nothing else is on I watch ER. I've probably watched the entire 15 season over 300 episodes run 12 times if not more. And no matter how many times I watched this show this episode you reviewed and the episode on the beach from season 8 where Mark Green dies still get me jumped up to this day. The fact that John Carter's survivors guilt led to a drug addiction for his character is one of the things I loved about the show they showed the consequences of what people go through. From when Mark lost the patient because of missed preeclampsia in season 1 and how he shut down from that. And Carter's addiction because of Lucy's death in the whole incident of being stabbed and this show had great writing and acting because you can really feel the emotions. Its funny you talk about stuffing down those feelings and dealing with them at another time, it's what you do. I remember my first arrest. A lady from another hospital suddenly decompensated. She wasnt even my patient but the crash bell went and we all ran, some of us got stuck in and others were given secondary roles to fill. Anyway, you just get on with it at the time, and it wasn't until I was testing the ABG (we have a gas analyzer in my unit so we can all run samples) that it hit me - the results come up and I knew she was gone. It was like slow-mo, as I tore the print out and ran around to the bed...I felt like the Grim Reaper. Sure enough, they called it. I had to leave. I went off and sat somewhere quiet, cried it out, took 5 and then just pushed it down and got on, I had 12 other patients who needed me. Then I went to resign that morning and was told to go away and think about it, not make rash decisions that would have long-last consequences. But I didn't want to be the reason anyone else died, which is how I viewed it at the time - if I'd not done the analysis correctly or if I'd not delivered the results to the clinical lead, if I'd dropped the syringe...that patient may have gotten a few more rounds of CPR and still be alive (I know she wouldn't have survived, we couldn't get her back). Even though I didn't know this woman, I never met her, it crushed me. I didn't resign, and I'm glad I didn't. Every day I get to make a difference and I don't want that to end. But I often think about that poor woman and her family and how, at least in a small way, I contributed to one of their worst days. I hope she rests in peace.

Wow, I completely understand you. It’s a LOT to carry. You know how much good you’re doing, but the heartbreaking moments still don’t hurt any less, even if you didn’t know the patients well. I’ve had similar experiences, and I can still see the people’s faces when they realized that they are dying and how scared they were. Forever burned in my memory. I’m sorry you’ve dealt with this, but also thank you for all you’ve done to help so many too ❤️

I did. I personally knew two people who were later diagnosed with schizophrenia. The first guy was a typical presentation in his early 20s and I never heard of any additional complictions or any violence with him. The second man atypically presented in his late 30s and there had been a long history of some drug use and minor violence, but his crowning achievement as a paranoid schizophrenic was the murder of his mother which got him condemned to spending the rest of his life in a psychiatric prison facility. He died recently. Best rock 'n roll drummer I ever played with and people who knew him still speak in total awe of his talent which thankfully lives on in recorded music.

LOVED the reaction! I’m glad you picked a different episode other than the pilot. This one is such an iconic moment in the series. If you do more, I suggest the finale of S11 “the show must go on” or the beginning of S13 “bloodline” Also? 😂 “he needs serious therapy” listen: John Carter and therapy don’t mix 😂

Basically without St. Elsewhere ER doesn't happen. It also has one of the best musical themes ever written, by Dave Grusin. Here's the opening credit sequence. Check it out. I was maybe…18, when I watched this? Had a gallbladder working at 12%, barely eating, and just counting down the days until my cholecystectomy (less than one week after my Gr 12 graduation). I mean, this didn’t help my (at the time) fear of hospitals and surgery…but this is life. I’m 42 now, with MS and more. Oh, how young and naive I was…!

Black or Dark humour, I think is common for people who deal with these things. I remember watching the extras on a Rizzoli & Iles box set, where the actor and one of the series writers did ride alongside with the police department. Some of this made it to one of the episodes.

@@JessTheMDI've got the perfect episode to recommend. Season 4, episode 15, Exodus. A dangerous chemical spills in the hospital, and it is just pure chaos. I'd love to see what you think about it, and how much you can tell us about what's happening, what they're doing right or wrong. And maybe the after-effect of this video, in the season 6 finale. There might not be much educational value in it, since Carter's (the one who lived in this video) coworkers are just trying to get him into rehab, but perhaps you could salvage something because that's not the whole episode. I just watched it for the first time, and really want to see someone else's reaction of it, lol. The acting is phenomenal.

Do you think teh saddle embolism was due to teh tamponade, or since the coup de grat of Lucy was due to additional clots forming after the reversal of heparin. Should Lizzy have withdrawn the heparin and maybe Lucy would not have gone out that way?
@JessTheMD
@JessTheMD 2 ай бұрын
I doubt it was caused by the tamponade. I think it had more to do with her hypercoagulable state, and when they reversed heparin, everything just started clotting off, including her lung vasculature 😕
