COME SEE ME ON TOUR:
Harry Potter is one of the biggest book and film franchises of all time, and over the course of such a long story, you better believe I found some medical scenes to react to. We look at scenes from The Sorcerer’s Stone (The Philosopher’s Stone for my UK friends), The Chamber of Secrets, The Prisoner of Azkaban, The Goblet of Fire, The Order Of The Phoenix, The Half Blood Prince, and The Deathly Hallows. Between Harry, Ron, Hermione, Hagrid, Snape, Dumbledore, Dobby, Belatrix, Malfoy, Neville, and Voldemort himself, there was plenty of medical criticism to go around. Specifically we talk about Harry’s scar, Z-plasty, salmonella, broken wrists, concussions, trauma, quidditch accidents, broom falls, Phoenix tears, gillyweed, holding your breath, the bends, bleeding out, vaping, drawing blood, chest compressions, and even splinching! Are there any scenes you think I missed from JK Rowling’s epic?Harry Potter is one of the biggest book and film franchises of all time, and over the course of such a long story, you better believe I found some medical scenes to react to. I think the reason Neville's injury in The Sorcerer's Stone wasn't worse is because, in canon, when he was a baby, he was dropped from a balcony to see if he had magic. He did, thankfully, but I'm guessing that's why he didn't get more hurt.

My thoughts exactly ! It also would have been great to hear about lycanthropy from a medical point of view because I think I’ve read something about it once, like people getting sick or something 🤔 Yet, there are so many moments in HP that could be interesting to hear about and so little time. Maybe a part 2 about Sirius’ death, Dumbledore’s death (and how old he was, the effects of such an old age on the body etc), Tonks possibility to change her face/hair, Moody’s eye, Sectumsempra/Endoloris, etc. Gosh, I wish I went to med school instead of Law school 😅

Fun Fact about Neville: in the books it is explained that his family thought he was not going to have magic and so they were trying all kinds of messed up stuff to trigger his magic. So one day his uncle dangled him out of the window and kinda FORGOT and so Neville fell, but magic children kinda have this thing were their magic shows intuitively, so instead of going SPLAT Neville bounced a while like a basketball and his family was so glad that his magic finally showed.

In regards to being able to survive a lot of these physical injuries, there is actually a canon reason for it. In the Fantastic Beasts movie, Newt Scamander mentions how wizard and muggle anatomies are subtly different. In that scene, he gives muggle Jacob Kowalski a helmet and set of armour for his protection, but doesn’t have any for himself. This suggests that wizards can survive more severe physical injuries than muggles can, though I doubt they can just brush off all physical injuries. They fall from too high a height without anything to catch them or slow them down, they’re still gonna die the second they hit the ground. EDIT: There are actually a few injuries that you didn’t cover. In Philosopher’s Stone, Ron gets knocked off a giant knight chess piece as a sacrifice so Harry and Hermione can win and proceed forward. It’s not that far a fall, but he’s still out cold when he hits the ground. The book is even worse, since the white Queen, a sentient statue, hits him straight in the head with her arm. In Philosopher’s Stone, when Harry touches Quirrell, Quirrell gets severe burns on his body. In Prisoner of Azkaban, Malfoy’s arm gets slashed by Buckbeak the Hippogriff, an injury that he keeps going for months on end. In Prisoner, Harry falls off his broom during a Quidditch match. Dumbledore is able to save him, but it’s a close call. In Goblet, at least in the book, Harry is dropped by a giant spider onto a leg that he injured trying to kick at the spider. In Half-blood Prince, Harry is cut on a rock just past the point where you showed Dumbledore cutting his wrists. This is actually beneficial, as he needs blood to reopen the door that closed behind him. In the book version of Deathly Hallows, Harry loses control of the flying motorcycle and crashes into a muddy pond. This one actually does bang him up a bit, as his ribs and arm were damaged in the crash. If I missed any, please let me know. I’m going off of memory.

Given how advanced the medicine is for wizards vs muggles, it's likely that some of the injuries Dr Mike considers serious or even life threatening would be considered no worse than a paper cut to people who can do magic. Also, fun fact: Canonically, the "Skele-gro" Harry takes to restore the bones in his arm was invented by Linfred Potter, one of Harry's ancestors. (They actually have a family history in advanced alchemy. Their family fortune was originally established by Linfred and dramatically increased by Harry's grandfather, Fleamont, who invented an extremely popular hair management tonic.)

@@fcasias7 Yes, they would have bettered each other immensely if they cooperated, but that's a big if. The wizards could also completely destroy all Muggles if someone like Voldemort came into power, since wizards have the ability to just wave a stick at someone and that person drops dead. I believe canonically the story perpetuated by the magical community is that the Muggles began to distrust all the people who could wave sticks around and do either wonderful or terrible things at the drop of a hat, and while it was rare for witch-hunts to result in the deaths of actual witches and wizards (who could just magic themselves out of danger), the magical community decided it would be best for everyone if they secluded themselves from the Muggle world. This would lessen the odds both of the Muggles managing to successfully kill witches and wizards (especially children who have not yet learned to control their magic and thus would be more susceptible to being killed), but also reduce the needless suffering and deaths of Muggles (either at one another's hands, at the hands of said children who cannot control their magic and might accidentally kill someone in self-defense, or at the hands of a witch or wizard whose young child was killed by Muggles).

Very true, but would Madam Hooch have been able to identify a spinal injury? If there had been a spinal injury, which would've been likely with a fall from that height, it would've been better not to move him at all (unless of course they used magic to make sure he was kept completely still during transport). They really should have Madam Pomfrey stationed nearby during first years' flying lessons just in case. Neville was really lucky that it was just a broken wrist.

7:28 Yes. Yes, they are, in fact, candies that literally get kids sick. But what you didn't see (and maybe wasn't shown in the movie? I don't remember, it's been years since I've watched any of them...) was that each of these treats comes with a cure that gets you all better the moment you're safely out of class.
@MsKeylas
@MsKeylas 2 жыл бұрын
or it could simply be that effect of those treats are temporary. like for couple of hours. Similar as effect of some spells wears off after a time. Simple as that
@DaZebraffe
@DaZebraffe 2 жыл бұрын
@@MsKeylas Well, I don't know if the movies ever bothered to explain...again, haven't seen 'em in years...but in the books, it was explicitly explained that each treat was part of a pair, one to make you just sick enough to get you out of class, and one to eat after you're safely out of class, containing the antidote to the first treat. (Some of them are even both treats in one, with color-coded ends to tell you which one to eat first.) And you get a bundle of such paired treats with each purchase, 'cause they come in what's known as "Skiving Snackboxes."

Throughout the years, after reading the books (mostly audiobook), and watching the movies more than a handful of times, I always thought wizards and witches are somehow a little physically stronger than muggles, I mean they do seem live a bit more than muggles, most of them into their early 100s. Them being stronger, and sustaining less injury after accidents was something I often thought about, lol.
