In this video I embarrass myself by taking one of the harder examinations throughout medical training - The United States Medical Licensing Exam - Step 1 -- aka the USMLE Step 1, aka Step 1. This exam is full of nuance information and subtle things ranging from embryology, biology, physics, anatomy and physiology, medicine, pharmacology, microbiology, etc etc. There is a ton of basic science on this test...and to be frank...I haven't thought or studied this stuff in a LONG time. So hopefully, some of you all who are currently in pre-clinical medical school can get a laugh at this video. It's also a good way to show that as a Doctor...you don't really need to remember a lot of this stuff :).

Over the years I’ve come to learn that in the medical field as long as you know the basics of most information it becomes a lot easier to answer these questions just by the power of deduction. These tests tend to throw a lot of information at you but most of it doesn’t really pertain to what the question is asking you

Medicine is a field with an abundance of knowledge and information, and in the US we have prioritized clinical knowledge over clinical skills. Generally speaking, this prioritization results in multiple examinations and the average graduating doctor from the US will have more background info on basic sciences compared to other doctors. DOs and MDs will be completely fine. IMGs will have a much harder time without the score to compete with US grads. CK will also be much more important
@0doublezero0
@0doublezero0 3 жыл бұрын
@@farazr2 DOs will struggle also since they don't have the same connections and research MDs do. Taking the USMLE was a godsend for DO students. You take that away they will have to standout with research, aways, and especially Step 2CK. You have to take into account med schools are opening up more rapidly than spots created for those people. So matching will never be the same it was in the past.

@@0doublezero0 yea this is exactly what im concerned about
@farazr2
@farazr2 3 жыл бұрын
@@0doublezero0 You're not taking into account that two other classes of applicants that exist and take the majority of spots in the biggest specialties, US-IMGs and nonUS-IMGs. Right now, residencies will almost always take DOs before IMGs of either type unless there's a huge score discrepancy which is going away with Step 1 P/F. There are enough spots to take all DOs before taking any IMGs and still have empty spots. The gap between MD/DO is much smaller than US vs non-US so the only DOs who will significantly have more difficulty will be those in ultra-competitive specialties (plastics, derm, ortho, etc).
@mememachine25dank37
@mememachine25dank37 3 жыл бұрын
It’s going to effect DOs the same way it will effect MDs. Things such as letters of rec, research, and experience will be considered over step 1. As long as both MDs and DOs emphasize those aspects in their applications to residency and do well on the rest of the steps of the usmle they shud be good. Med students will now have to do more than just well on their exams to get to work in the field they want regardless of allopathy or osteopathy
