If I recall correctly, it was the Doctor who told the Dalek it was the last of its kind. He was bragging about destroying them all. The Dalek didn't know how the Time War had ended until it was told. With that in mind, we can then assume the Doctor was just gravely mistaken about wiping out the entire Dalek race in the war. He's brilliant as hell, but he's not all-knowing. :)

Eventually Eric will get the fact that no, he can't just go back in time and do it over again if something goes wrong. 😁 Well, he technically can, but not without some serious consequences.

The references to the tv shows play a lot better when you're from the UK so fully understand them. The first is the UK Big Brother, The Fashion show is a BBC show at the time called What Not to Wear and then obviously the other is Weakest Link. The hosts of each are robotic versions of the hosts of each of the shows at the time of this episode originally airing so it ends up showing the UK audience a hellish future version of current shows whereas for those outside the UK they perhaps largely come across as more a generic version of the kinds of shows that are on TV like the fake shows in the Supernatural episode Changing Channels. The basic idea is obviously still there for people to understand but it has ,less immediate grounding for foreign viewers

Daleks *do* have time travel capabilities. In the Classic Series, they stole time travel technology from the Time Lords, but it is relatively primitive and nowhere near their level of sophistication. Essentially, they have the ability for a small number of Daleks to travel through time in a limited fashion with a great deal of effort (though occasionally and inconsistently with more precision, subject to the needs of the plot).

Oh god 8:21 is SO GOOD. The fact that you actually think the Doctor is gonna shoot someone point blank is a testament to tone and storytelling surrounding Rose "death".

Simply put, there's a timelock on the entire Time War, so that nothing can time travel in or out, without resorting to some extremely specific and complex measures.

The way I understand it, they can't change events they have already experienced or have interacted with. They can only interact with their own past if it doesn't change what they originally experienced.

This whole two parter is one of those stories that always holds up *way* better than I remember it. I don't think a lot of this season has aged all that well, but these episodes and the Empty Child/Doctor Dances hold up real well.

In my opinion this two part finale is probably one of the best the new series has ever produced. Strap yourself in for part two, it gets real fucking crazy real fucking fast.

Don't forget that after the last episode of this season you guys need to watch the Christmas Special. Then you can start season 2. Every season has a Christmas Special and they must be watched for continuity.

To answer your questions. The entire time War has been time locked, every event of the time war has been locked. The Daleks were invading Gallifrey and they were about to get their hands on Gallifreyan technology and weaponry which would allow the daleks to travel through time and wipe everyone out so the doctor had to wipe gallifrey out of the universe. As the last act of the time lords, the entire war was time locked so that every dalek and time lord fighting the war with dangerous weapons would not be able to escape and no other warrior race or survivors out there can join to help either side. It was the only thing the time lords could do when Gallifrey fell. (There were other planets that got consumed by the war, and few civilisation already burnt as a result of the time war so others were eager to join). As a result, only the doctor survived coz he caused it but he can never go back.

As someone who's from the UK, I'll clarify the programmes they ended up in in this episode: 1. The Doctor ended up in a future edition of Big Brother, which I know you have a version of in the US. When he goes into the Diary Room and he hears the voice going, "You are live on Channel 44000, please do not swear!", that was the voice of Davina-droid, voiced by Davina McCall, who was the real-life presenter of Big Brother in this country at the time. The "You are live on Channel 44000, please do not swear!" is a reference to the times when Davina would speaking to the house on eviction nights to announce the result of the public vote for eviction, she'd go "Big Brother House, this is Davina. You are live on Channel 4, please do not swear!" as Channel 4 was the broadcaster of Big Brother at the time. In 2005, Big Brother was on civilian series six and celebrity series three. 2. Rose ended up on a future edition of The Weakest Link, which again I know you had a version of in the US. The Anne-droid were voiced by Anne Robinson, who was the real-life presenter of The Weakest Link both here and in the US. The civilian editions of The Weakest Link were on BBC Two at the time with occasional celebrity specials on BBC One. 3. Jack ended up in a future edition of What Not To Wear, which was a lifestyle programme on BBC Two in the early and mid-2000s. The Trinny-droid and Susannah-droid were voiced by Trinny Woodall and Susannah Constantine, better known as "Trinny and Susannah", who again were the real-life presenters of What Not to Wear. Each week, members of the public would go on the programme to be given fashion makeovers by Trinny and Susannah. Davina McCall, Anne Robinson and Trinny and Susannah were basically just taking the piss out of themselves in this episode, particularly Trinny and Susannah in their segments of the episode. You do have to be from this country to understand the references in this episode, though, apart from The Weakest Link as again, the US had a version of it. And as I also said, the US has a version of Big Brother, but Big Brother wasn't mentioned once by name in this, only by the eye symbol and cameras, so it would only be from this country to really understand it.

the doctpr doesn't run into any other timelords because timelords lived by a strict code, to simply observe without interfering. as such there is maybe a handful of time travellers across the entire of space and time, its a needle in a desert situation

Looking back, what I really liked about this episode is how it shows the (dire) consequences brought about by the Doctor's actions. I don't remember any episodes from NuWho tackling very much anything like it. edit: Sorry, I have to clarify, by "actions" I meant, "saving the day and then leaving". We don't normally see what happens after he and his companion leave and move on to the next adventure. Later in the series, there's one particular beautiful episode where they leave the place after making such a radical change and the inhabitants are left to rebuild their lives. Do they live happily ever after..? Or at the very least surive? ....Awww... I missed you Pepper Pots! Calvin: "Drinking the heart of the Tardis" Whuht? That's just uncannily appropriate.

The Time War is time locked, which means that nothing can escape and nothing can enter, so it does matter that the Dalek said that it was the last one and the same with The Doctor

Time, in Doctor Who, is composed of two parts: "Inner Time" and "Outer Time". Time travel involves Outer Time, while Inner Time flows in one direction, (mostly) unalterable, but doesn't necessarily match up with Outer Time. This means that something that happens 10,000 years in the future, and something 10,000 years in the past can be happening "simultaneously" from the point of view of Inner Time.

The Daleks did fight in the Last Great Time War. The War was time locked meaning no one could time travel into or out of the War's Time period

The Time War happen outside of time itself but because of that it was has if it was happening at all the moments of time causing destruction to all places and moments. The Doctor survived for a reason that will be explained in the upcoming episodes
