Murray Gold was the best composer Doctor Who ever had, change my mind. I mean I absolutely love Howell's theme and the 1996 movie one, but Gold's takes on it (especially the Matt Smith era ones) are mostly great.

I also like how the Middle Eight isn't ruined by the 2014-2017 Middle Eight like in usual mashups. THAT is some clever editing!

It sounds so smooth, I'm assuming because of the same thing being played at the same time, but either way, this has basically become the "default" Doctor Who intro for me. I listen to this whenever I'm doing something else Doctor Who related on my computer lol

I love all Murrays Gold contribution to Doctor Who, the only thing that I despised was the Matt Smith era Doctor Who theme, glad they reverted it back for Capaldi.

Why does Murry Gold sound like Dan Howell?

The overall problem is that every version since the original is a cover version, it is extremely rare that a cover version sounds as good or better than the original version you heard first. There are many versions including this version which are very well done and very creative but at the end of the day it's not the original.

kinda like the official kingdom hearts 3 ost, those had tracks all mashed up of past games. Some were so messy

Season 11 theme anyone?

I never heard the composer criticize Derbyshire's theme before. Am I getting it out of context? Because it's an extraordinary things for him to say, and I can't quite believe he said it. I've been rewatching a few post-2005 episodes recently, and Gold's contribution to the first two at least is extraordinary. It's brilliant and works beautifully, and those episodes work well in every way to re-introduce Doctor Who. Fast forward a year, and incidental music cuts across an important Tennant speech during a Cyberman episode, and undermines the emotional cadence of the speech itself. I remember the Unicorn and the Wasp as a fun episode totally dominated by the distracting music. It was almost impossible to follow a lot of Matt Smith's episodes due to the music (super-fast line delivery another factor). Now I'm watching Capaldi's Kill the Moon, with subtitles so I can pick up the dialogue despite the distractions of Gold's music. It swoops in an out, synchronising with some "big moments", such as the characters walking out on the surface of the Moon, but cutting across much of the rest. I really don't know what went wrong, but a lot of recent Doctor Who for me was diminished by the music for me. Also, most people experienced it as too loud, although I understand it works better with just the right audio set-up. These comments about Derbyshire's sublime, ground-breaking theme have rather done it for me though...

The Doctor Who theme should never use a "real" instrument. Ever. They never used one for the whole of the original series but all of the new ones they do and this is one reason the new ones reek of sameness. Orchestral pieces should be left right out of it. Gold isn't innovative like Howell and Derbyshire were, just pumping it out like a production line. You know, book an orchestra and add some boom, bash and wallop. Also, he doesn't get elements of the theme correct and as they have always been. His closest effort was his original one which does remain the best he has done. Of course all of this is my opinion, people are bound to disagree!
