Such an important lesson. You can be the most awesome person capable of saving the world but you can't convince someone hung up on another to notice you. Nothing Martha could do would take his mind off Rose. It's so unfair, but that's life. Get over and get on with your life like Martha did.

I like that the Dr. Who audience finally has a companion that doesn't need the Doctor. Even though she is madly in love with him she moves on. I keep wanting to say to each of the companions when the Doctor leaves. Girls get a grip. Start creating your own adventures. That's what Martha does.

Martha got handed the short end of the stick when it came to the Doctor - for him, although he did genuinely try to do better for her, she was only ever really the "rebound" companion as he tried to get over Rose. It's one of the reasons that the 3rd season finale is my favourite of Modern Who. Alongside the majestic reappearance of the Master, I never respected Martha more than when she admitted that despite everything, travelling around with the Doctor was slowly destroying her, in more ways than one.

The issue for me was her extreme desire for the doctor and constant jealousy which is never a pretty sight on anyone. She's prolly the most capable companion he had, but written in a manner which made it more conflicting than it had to be.

@emma45574 жыл бұрын
Was such an important story line to see, especially as a child growing up. Someone leaving the person they are in love with, because it is what is good for them, not necessarily because there was anything wrong with the other's character or because anyone did anything wrong. There are so many similar character arcs where the equivalent of the Doctor would've ended up falling for Martha. The whole thing where they realise the person they loved was right in front of them all along. But this shows you can love someone else even if they don't feel the same way, and still be strong and love yourself. It shows the importance of honouring your boundaries, and leaving; moving on with your life when the time comes. All adds up to an amazing character.

Martha was so amazing. So under-rated and smart. She might be as smart as the Doctor at points.
@supremeoverlorde210910 ай бұрын
I often wonder if Martha would be more beloved by the fandom if she wasn't weighed down by the impossible expectations of entering the story so soon after the departure of Rose Tyler. It comes across as though she was set up to lose from the get-go. The conversation surrounding her seems most often to revolve around her being the rebound companion. But dang it, if she wasn't one of the smartest and most resourceful companions the Doctor ever had! Her own departure may not have been the flashiest, but it was surprisingly empowering. She poured so much time and energy into trying to make the Doctor see her, but it was never enough and ultimately, she chose her own mental health and self-respect. That's an absolute power move as far as I'm concerned. She deserved better than to have to spend an entire season standing in Rose's shadow.

Moments like these are exactly why the writers shouldn’t have gone ham with the whole “crush on the Doctor” thing. It overshadowed her character development. I love Martha and think she deserved a lot better. She and the Doctor had a great friendship, but Martha’s crush kind of got in the way of that. Not to mention that it created unnecessary rivalry between her and Rose, who 1. hadn’t met and 2. were both awesome anyway. I would’ve loved to see Martha join Rose and the Doctor, but sadly for the sake of un-Doctor Who-like drama, we didn’t get to see that. Justice for Dr. Martha Jones, people.
@alexpotts65204 жыл бұрын
Her crush *was* her character development, though. She already started out as brave, intelligent, etc, all the qualities other companions pick up as they travel with the Doctor. If she hadn't been instantly smitten with the Doctor, I don't think she would have ever got on board the TARDIS.

There's nothing really wrong with Martha being in love with him, they should have just written it better. The Doctor Who books handled it better than the show. And the Doctor is the one who starts the Martha vs Rose thing in the first place 🤷🏾♀️

she should definitely return. mickey too. and come on while not jack while we're at it. the best companions, that are still alive on earth, so it wouldn't be weird for them to make a return. why not just add them into the storyline? if UNIT's gone now, why not make a new cyberman invasion or something, and make martha, mickey and jack part of a new extra-terrestrial taskforce or something, let them help the doctor out for an episode. they could all react to her being a woman now, and having old companions back would make doctor who feel more like doctor who, help Jodie to connect better to such a big role.

@@honey-rosemoreira8795 Whichever one is correct for the incarnation of the doctor in question? "doctor #10 was a good doctor, i liked him", "doctor #14 is a great doctor, i like her" etc. It might sound a bit weird when you say stuff like "After the master made his gender change her name was altered to "Missy"; an abbreviation of "Mistress" the feminine equivalent of "Master". "his" and "her" in the same sentence, talking about the same character and still making total sense! You just have to stop thinking of gender as being a defining attribute of a character and realise it's just a description of one attribute and then there's no reason you can't use whichever one works in a particular sentence.
