After studying and suffering from dry eye, I understood that dry eyes is not an eye disease,its disease related to inflammation which can be due to viral infections, immune related issues, or related to gut, work on underlying causes, any eye drop, warm compress etc are short term relief but nothing changes without dealing with underlying cause

Just wanted me make a comment about dry eyes…..I am a retired hospital nurse and have worn contact lenses for 56 years ( since I was fourteen) . I have found that when I am well hydrated with pure drinking water …..……have purposely hydrated at designated times during the day ( like taking a dose of life -saving medicine!) , I do not have dry eyes and my contact lenses remain comfortable from sunup to ( well past) sundown. In my decades of nursing, I never had to wear my glasses once…….as long as I was well hydrated!!! I discovered the importance of drinking water to make the eyes moist ! Just wanted to share!

So I have only just after 27 years of having this that b12 and B6 helps and now your recommendation of omega3s The uk doctors and NHS are discussing they don’t help or even look at what autoimmune disease causes secondary inflammation. Also if it wasn’t for a family friend I would have died within a year as I was undiagnosed from birth to age13! I lost childhood , education and mental and physical development. I had dry eyes for years. I saw top ophthalmologist at the medical school and the doctor asked me if had sinus surgery because he noticed many patients with dry eyes had sinus surgery. I did have sinus surgery! I had tried 25 different eye drops, I did warm compresses, the tea tree eyelid wash and increased my Omega 3 still had dry eyes! We went to this health spa signed up for three day water fast on alkaline water to induce autophagy. I noticed my dry eyes went away! I talked to my ND about it later and he put me on an alkalizing formula that is mixed in water and told me to increase my water intake as well and that worked I was cured.

Great update. Mentioned this on a previous clip, but 4-5 grams/day of triglyceride Omega 3 over 12 weeks worked pretty well for me. As you suggest. not a silver bullet but very good efficacy. Add to this the general downregulation of inflammation overall and it's a win win.

Excited to see the follow up video of your own experience taking omega-3! I'm not convinced omega-6 is per se inflammatory though. For sure saturated and trans fats are, but it really seems like eating unsaturated fats, including omega-6, in the context of an unprocessed diet is healthy. I think the main issue is not getting enough omega-3, independent of omega-6 intake. But I'd be interested to hear you elaborate on your arguments against omega-6 in another video...
@DoctorEyeHealth
@DoctorEyeHealth Жыл бұрын
Yes! Omega 6 is pretty interesting. A little more complicated I feel. There is at least one subtype of omega6 which is anti-inflammatory and may be beneficial. Agree on the sat/trans fat as being not the best.

Saturated fat is not inflammatory. It cannot be oxidized, unlike polyunsaturated fats which includes omega 3. My son learned that specifically in his 1st year biochemistry class in medical school. O-6 is not bad per se, the issue is vegetable oil that is refined because it is already oxidized.

Eight months later, my eyes hurt constantly, & all I know is I have optic neuritis, but having a name does not help. Thank you for giving me something to try. I'm scared and felt hopeless. The following may help: good hydration, vit. D3 to reach level of 100mmol/l, omega3 3-4gms/day. If you have systemic inflammation CRP (c reactive protein) >>1 find its cause and address it. Nevertheless, taking curcumin, good brand, 3x a day will help quenching the destructive fire in your body. I know from my own experience.

I'd suggest a thick eye ointment that provides a barrier over your eyes while you sleep so that they don't stick in the morning. I use drops during the day but they are not enough to help at night so I use an ointment. It's fiddly to put in and makes eye sight blurry for a little bit after application but you'll be sleeping so that's fine. I don't wake up with sticking eye lids anymore. I get mine from Amazon as the one my optician suggested is apparently out of stock everywhere (lacri lube) so I had to find an alternative. I live in England. Good luck.

Hey Dr Allen, thanks for the vid - cool to hear the benefits of oral omega 3 supplements. Do you have any thoughts/tips on topical omega 3? We have an eyedrop in Australia called Novatears and they have released a new version called Novatears + Omega 3 - is it worth the extra price tag? Or is it just a marketing gimmick?

I have had success with refresh Mega3 which has some omega 3 in there from flax seed. While I suspect the oil/ omega 3 component helps with maybe a mild degree of inflammation, I believe it helps more with stabilizing the tear film and preventing evaporation.

Dear Dr. Allen, I hope this comment finds you well. I've been struggling with severe dry eyes from about 10 years. After doing some research, I came across moisture chamber glasses from Ziena that seem to be highly recommended for managing dry eye symptoms. I'm seriously considering purchasing these glasses, but I'm a bit hesitant about buying glasses online. I was wondering if you could make a video on how to buy glasses online, specifically from Ziena . thanks in advance

A quick story of success! My little rescue dog (maybe about 4 yrs old or so) had suffered abuse and was near death from starvation when we got him 2 yrs ago. He gained weight and was very healthy until one month ago when suddenly he got those cataract blue toned eyes and started declining! It came out of nowhere. He was stumbling and very emotionally down due to abruptly not being his formerly active self. I was so upset, so shocked by this change. I suspect it was poor nutrition over the yrs before we got him and poor breeding. I read a book by Dr Pitcairn a holistic vet who said to put cod liver oil in his eyes along with salt water solution and add cod liver oil in his food. Well you wouldnt believe me if I told you how fantastic these methods have worked to bring our little dog into a state of health again! I am still blown away by the healing power of cod liver oil. Another interesting piece is that he always had issues with appetite - it came and went. Now that we put a teaspoon of cod liver oil in his food, he is so excited about eating. I know that with genetic eye issues these remedies dont alway work and maybe not forever, I am not sure. But what a wonderful turn of events using cod liver oil. I am currently adding it to my own routine to improve my health. Cant say enough about cod liver oil.

Hi doctor, I had lasik done 5 months ago and still suffer from severely dry eye. I take omega 3s, use eye drops every hour-2 hours, do warm compresses, etc and I’m still dealing with this awful dry eye. It seems to be okay in the morning - mid afternoon and then the dryness really kicks in. Is this something I will have to live with forever? :((
@DoctorEyeHealth
@DoctorEyeHealth Жыл бұрын
Hey thanks for sharing, Alyson. That is really tough. As I have discussed in a previous livestream/video about dry eye after lasik, lasik can sever the corneal nerves and amplify dryness. It can also change the way the eye heals itself. I have helped many people improve their dryness post lasik, but it is something that may never be "cured". But hopefully with treatments, you and your doctors can get the symptoms under control and manage it at a level where you won't suffer. Are your doctors also putting you on any medications or recommending any procedures?

@@DoctorEyeHealth my doctor has given me xiidra but I have not tried it yet. Everyone I talked to be fore I had my lasik said their dryness eventually went away (even after a year and a half) so I didn’t think the dryness would be that big of a deal. I never would’ve had lasik if I knew how awful this dryness is. I also deal with sinus problems and I’ve seen some people say taking Xiidra caused them sinus problems which makes me hesitant to try it.

Thanks very much for this Doctor. I'm 80 yo now and tried fish oil capsules over a year ago but had many hematomas so my PCP suggested that I stop the fish oil capsules. I am on two blood thinners plus more things for cardiac issues [Plavix, Xarelto and Toprol] and would like to restart Omega-3s. Is there a safe way to do this for my eye issues? I have elevated ocular pressures, glaucoma and the start of macular degeneration so all of that complicates things. Thanks for any help you might offer. BTW, the Opti-Mel Manuka eye drops have eliminated the floaters that I suffered with for many years. Gracias!
@DoctorEyeHealth
@DoctorEyeHealth Жыл бұрын
Oh wow! Great to hear you have found some relief with the Optimel Manuka honey drops, I have not read much about them helping floaters, but either way I am happy to hear it. Omega 3 supplements have been shown in some studies to contribute to bleeding, however, newer research supports that the increased bleeding risk has to do with the TYPE of omega 3 supplements (because of the processing). A tryglyceride form of omega 3 is not supposed to contribute to bleeding risk. But, due to your other systemic issues and risk, best to ask your PCP if they have heard of the Tryglyceride forms of omega 3 vs ethyl ester forms in regards to bleeding risk and if they can confirm it and what they think will be best/safest for you. But most surgeons do not worry about omega 3s before surgery because the bleeding risk of omega 3s has largely been disproven.

My eyes were mostly fine till I visited my optometrist last month, now they're continually dry, itchy, stingy and hurt a bit when I squeeze my eyes shut (and a twitch). Thinking I may have been infected at her office. BTW, she suspects Pseudoexfoliation of the lens, she wrote it down for me to look up, I did and scared the crap out of me, my wife (a GP) also looked it up and told me nothing to worry about. Appears to be more than one thing, wasn't explained well in the office.
