Dr. Danielle Belardo is the Director of Cardiology, and Co-Director of Research and Education, at IOPBM in Newport Beach California. She is also a proud vegan, but that alone has not stopped vegan twitter from ridiculing her for various beliefs and practices she holds surrounding plant-based diets. I sat down with Dr. Belardo to discuss why she receives so much hate from vegans online, where she actually stands on being a vegan vs. what she recommends for her patients, and various ways you can improve the health of your heart. There are some really hot takes in here, particularly around being vegan and receiving vaccines that were tested on animals, cholesterol and saturated fats in eggs, and universal benefits of plant-based diets.

Vegans “hate” Dr. Belardo? As someone who’s been vegan longer than she’s been alive, this is news to me. So is everyone here saying that she is worthy of hatred because she blocks people on her IG? Because that is not in any way unusual behavior. Also a person who posts on IG doesn’t owe anyone anything. Or is it that her scientific and medical rigor is up to question because she blocks people? Because that’s not how rigor works. Or is there some other contention being made here that I’m not getting?

To be fair, she did dodge a couple of questions. At around 10:30, Dr Mike talks about the development of the human brain after they started eating meat, which she brushed off. The very next question, Dr. Mike talks about a study in which vegans and meat eaters with similar lifestyles otherwise showed no significant difference in health status, which she countered with a completely different study. She does speak based on evidence, but she's well aware that the evidence she presents is not 100% uncontested, and knows how to dodge when someone brings up a good counterpoint.
@AndreiTache
@AndreiTache 3 жыл бұрын
@Don Korb Hmm, I actually think she did a good job addressing the healthy user bias. She did acknowledge that it was a real factor, but also cited another study that showed that, even when accounting for it, there was still a noticable benefit to eating plant-based proteins. She wasn't using confirmation bias to find another study that agreed with her views, but rather showed one that took into account the first study's findings and tried to control for it. She did that so the question of whether or not healthy user bias is responsible for the benefits found is now down to which of the two studies is stronger/more reproducable. As for the question about humans starting to develop more around the time they started eating meat, I felt her hesitation was more because this is more of a corelation than a causation. It would be really dificult to isolate and prove that eating meat was the actual reason humans started developing more/faster, and untill that causation is proven, this is just one possible theory. This is my take at least, but I felt like she did a really good job of looking at the data as impartially as possible and drew her conclusions from that.

@@CaptainSweatpants90 but "meat evolved us" is extreme oversimplification, major factor was just cooking food (saving calories) and eating more calories. There was never a claim that something inside meat was magical that suddenly made modern humans, that's misunderstanding, the claim was always that meat and cooking lead to higher consumption of calories and that was the main point.

As a non-vegan, I’m more inclined to be open and listen to the health based benefits from a vegan doctor who can talk about their diet choice from a health benefit stance at all stages of life backed with medical science. And the fact that she can say there is no perfect diet to follow important, because it does acknowledge that we are all different and have different bodily requirements. It’s best to choose (with your doctor and or dietician guidance if needed) a healthy diet that works for you, your body and you shouldn’t be shamed over it. ***Wow! I feel like one of the hardest parts of dropping beef and pork from my diet was this "all or nothing" mentality... it turns out that having a hamburger once every couple months isn't so bad for my health. I've been losing weight, all my blood work looks a ton better, and I feel a world better. Denying yourself foods you want causes some negative behaviors, focusing on what you can't have, and is more likely to lead to just giving up on a healthy diet. Just cutting way back on something, but not denying it entirely, does a much better job of creating a sustainable diet that you can stick to and be healthy.

@@etincardiaego That's a really ignorant way of thinking. First of all, not everybody has access to all these healthy fruits and vegetables because they are not always cheap or available. Some people have to hunt in order to survive. Just because we can choose not to eat meat, doesn't mean we should. Meat provides something that most vegetables don't. It's high in complete proteins and Vitamin B12. Then with fish, you can get Omega 3 fatty acids. You need to realize that not everyone is as privileged as you to be able to go vegan. Aside from nutrition, vegetables can just be so disgusting. I've tried everything from vegan burgers, vegan ice cream, vegan Mac and cheese and even vegan lasagna. All DISGUSTING. Tbh, I respect vegans in their chouce to go vegan. But they need to stop trying to get other people to go vegan. People are always going to consume meat. It is possible to be healthy on a diet that includes meat just as it is to be healthy without. People shouldn't be made to feel bad for eating meat. People have been eating meat since the beginning of time. There's nothing morally wrong with it. And humans having the choice to choose not to eat meat does not change that fact. Especially because there are people who do not have that choice and that is what vegans don't get

Hey Doctor Mike, I have a medical condition called gastroparesis that limits what I can eat, including an intake of fiber. While I know people don't *have* to eat animal products, eating a vegan or vegetarian lifestyle usually includes eating lots of plant material (heyo fiber). Thanks for discussing these issues holistically and being patient-focused, because there are absolutely those of us out there for whom eating meat is just a reality that will likely remain, and thanks to Doctor Belardo for talking about lean meats and sharing all this knowledge and information

So, from my understanding plant protein has less bioavailability, thus requiring more protein consumption. And as far as benefits from red meat, my understanding was also that it’s a healthy source of iron. Also, from what I believe is still the scientific consensus, prior to hunting and gathering, we were scavengers. We had the ability to eat a wide variety of foods. I’d be interested in a discussion between her and Dr. Layne Norton. Also, these studies comparing red meat, white meat, and plant based nutrition, did they control for calories, and more importantly, BMI? From everything I’ve heard, we, at least on average, only get about 25% of the cholesterol in our body from outside sources, the rest is produced by our body, as a similar response as inflammation, in that it’s meant to help protect areas for healing. Being overweight tends to worsen most health issues, as well as being itself inflammatory in nature, which can cause more damage to veins and arteries, potentially causing an increase in cholesterol production. These statements are an amalgamation of a few different people I have followed, and I am not a medical professional, so clearly I might be misinformed. But from what I’ve seen, cutting meat out of your diet is not anyway necessary. And I’m not a fan of following a diet that requires you to supplement just to make up for the lack of nutrition cutting entire food groups out of your diet can produce. It seems counterintuitive. I will agree increased fiber consumption is VERY important, and is my main focus for my diet (obviously protein and calories are as well).

YES our bodies are capable of producing cholesterol from scratch, something she did NOT SAY. She really should have gone into cholesterol a lot more since it's SO misunderstood... for example high LDLs can be caused by toxins... like pesticides... EVEN ON PLANTS. I am VERY disappointed she didn't mention "organic" (= no synthetic chemicals) at all. AND YES you are right... relying on supplements over WHOLE foods is NOT IDEAL.

@@uhoh2855 Recipe: I used to make these two dishes all the time - but I liked them because they're easy to make and easy to change based on what I had. You can do the same procedure to make salsa rice or coconut curry rice - Make brown rice, and while that is cooking, chop up some vegetables and pan fry those in some oil. Do onions, garlic, ginger, carrots, potatoes first, then add in 'softer' vegetables like zucchini or broccoli. After the first wave of vege is partially cooked, add taco seasoning or curry powder and some red pepper flake. When the rice is just about cooked, add a tender green like spinach and let that just barely get wilted before adding the rice. Add about a can of (full fat) coconut milk or a good shot of your favorite salsa and stir everything together. Bonus points if you add in a drained&rinsed can of beans at this point too. Salt & pepper to taste. If you're doing the salsa version, this is great topped with cheese, but both are great with maybe chopped up bell pepper on top (for crunch). This makes an unholy pile of food that's great for a dinner and makes good leftovers. If you want to add meat, I'm sure this is great with chicken; it's also a good way to use frozen vegetables if you don't want to chop vegetables forever. Good luck!

Is there a produce rescue near you? They offer perfectly good but cosmetically “ugly” produce that would normally go into the garbage. Where I live you can get a 60 pound box of rescued produce for $12. Frozen vegetables are often less expensive and they’re actually healthier than the fresh stuff in many cases because they’re frozen right after harvest. Beans, lentils, peas, chickpeas, potatoes, carrots, red cabbage, bananas, oats, etc are among both the healthiest and cheapest things at the grocery store. Like anything else, it’s a matter of learning. But it’s actually much cheaper to eat a super healthy diet, especially since many of the drugs people take are no longer needed so you save there too.

Processed are things that have been stripped of what they had in their whole food state. Eg Juicing apples. You have stripped the apple of a lot of the great phytonutrients and the most important nutrient you can consume Fibre. So therefore it is no processed into a sweet apple juice that isn't as good for you as eating the same amount in its whole state (an apple). Chemicals normally refers to man-made chemicals, eg Aspartame.

Agree with MisterEE100, it's not only about chemicals and added substances. Flour is a processed version of wheat, corn etc. juice or purée is a processed form of apples, etc. Generally it implies a loss in nutritional value, even though it varies of course. Hand made apple purée is, for instance, less processed and better than bread, imo. Anyway you don't have to eat raw and whole all the time, but privilege whole > hand made «processed» > industrially processed 😊

I have seen so many vegans who just preach a vegan diet without knowledge of necessary supplements that are necessary to keep the vegan diet healthy and it's just frustrating when people claim going vegan is natural because it simply just isn't without modern science. Food has been enriched and supplemented and without modern science, a truly vegan diet is actually unhealthy.

Also, if it is truly unhealthy, why don't studies show as such? All major causes of mortality are reduced on a vegan diet, which has been shown and continues to be in studies. Any diet that is poorly planned will result in deficiencies, the standard American diet, for example, having the most deficiencies, yet the most meat and dairy consumption. Interesting.

@@pcaul8156 Tempeh is actually not natural and it is enriched/fortified with vitamins and minerals. It's actually a compound made by humans so maybe you need to do more research into what you're eating. Any food that is "enriched" or "fortified" is infused with vitamins or minerals not actually found in the ingredients naturally. Cremini mushrooms have no B12. Are you sure that you're not confusing the various B vitamins with each other? Please look at all of your nutritional facts again. I have nori at home and the nutritional label indicates no B12. Chlorella is alleged to have B12 but no study has definitively confirmed it and it may be trace amounts and also inconsistently, based on the NIH studies. It was attributed to the trace amount of B12 found in the waters because of the animal decomposition and vitamin deposition into the environment because it was inconsistently found and unable to be replicated in isolated conditions. So you have to have dead animals in the water and the algae has to absorb the B12 from that carcass. Additionally, yes, ALL of the studies show that you need a supplement or enriched foods. This means SCIENCE KEEPS YOU ALIVE. Not veganism. I mean, the doctor specifically states in the video it has to be a well planned and supplemented diet. @@dc3561 I like Danielle and continue to follow her. You're the type of person that makes assumptions about someone so you can out them in a certain category to fit your world view. The reason B12 is lower in 'natural foods' is due to modern sanitary practices that removes traces of soil that contain B12, that our ancestors would have eaten. The same with natural sources of water. Fermentation is what forms the b12 in tempeh via Lactobacillus, again natural. Dried or cooked Nori contains no B12, but that fresh product does, directly contradicting your statement. "high levels of Vitamin B12 were detected in the commercially available dried shiitake mushroom fruiting bodies (Lentinula edodes)" "Lion’s mane mushroom (Hericium erinaceus) fruiting bodies also contain considerable amounts of Vitamin B12[c-lactone]" Nevermind that without precious modern science you wouldn't have access to cheap meat and dairy sources from factory farms. Local farms are unsustainable and unaffordable for the majority. So quite hypocritical to attack a plant based diet for the same reason. Theres a lot of things you do that you couldn't without modern science, like typing commenting on videos attacking a diet you don't follow. Projecting. Also, what's wrong with supplementation? The majority of fortified foods are not for vegans, they are for the average consumer who still eat large amounts of meat and dairy and yet still have major deficiencies, arguably more important that b12. Science keeps everyone alive, and veganism is not an attack on science like you're trying to imply. Silly nonsense.

If you had to live with them and treat them everyday you wouldn't find them as "cute". As a supply chain person, I'd like to point out that going vegan or eating more plants does absolutely NOTHING to help the environment. It's overconsumption and waste of food, as well as buying greeneries that are out of season that do harm. Buying avocados when they're not native where you live? Getting grapes/strawberries in winter? Those avocados are flown across the world (yay more CO2 emissions) and your strawberries in winter are either coming from a greenhouse (excess water and electricity consumption) or are also flown. Same goes for almost all greeneries and veggies. Plants are seasonal and based on your geographical region. Anything you buy that doesn't come from your own garden or local farmers is either consuming excess water and electricity, or just flown and transported from god knows how far (oh yeah, increase that CO2 footprint baby). But yeah, tell yourself that you're so green and eco. Your vegan eco lifestyle does jack sh*t for the environment.

I had a lot of vegans look down on me for switching to a vegetarian diet but I try to source my products from local farms and check out the animals living situation before I buy things like milk. I assume her doctor was attributing the hair loss to iron deficiency. Although red meat is a rich source of iron, the form of iron found in red meat is Heme. Heme Iron is a pro oxidant with a strong association with cardiovascular disease, stomach and colorectal cancer. This is why health guidelines generally suggest limiting red meat consumption. Iron deficiency is not an inherent part of a vegan diet, however it is important to know the best sources if you're susceptible to anemia. Whole grains, legumes, nuts, seeds, dried fruit and leafy greens are all good sources. You can also boost your absorption of iron with the presence of Vitamin C + garlic and onions. Another common cause of hair loss is rapid weight loss. So track your calories and make sure you're eating enough. Anyone can be healthy on a vegan diet... However (like with any diet) you need to assure it's appropriately planned. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (the largest organisation of nutrition professionals in the world) released the following statement on vegan diets: “appropriately planned vegetarian, including vegan, diets are healthful, nutritionally adequate, and may provide health benefits for the prevention and treatment of certain diseases. These diets are appropriate for all stages of the life cycle, including pregnancy, lactation, infancy, childhood, adolescence, older adulthood, and for athletes.”

Could you clarify how the registration process looks like for dietitians? I met several people who give dietary advice and have some form of education or license. Some of them had a strong bias to some form of diet before they started that process and have not changed that during their education. But I am not sure what type of certification they have. I can only imagine the responsibility Dr. Mike feels when inviting an expert to broadcast on his platform. If some of the given information is not correct it might impact hundreds of thousands of people negatively. This might reflect badly on him and affect his integrity.

@@Silent.Program in order to be a dietitian you must first get a bachelors degree from an accredited program then you have to do a 1200 hour supervised internship that consists of a clinical, community, and food service rotation (I’m focusing on sports so I’m also doing a sports rotation on top of that). From there you have to take the RD exam and once your an RD you must apply for licensure in the state you are practicing in. By 2024 all RDs must have a masters degree to practice (most RDs I would say now have a masters or are working on it because of this change). You also have to do continuing education constantly to maintain RD status. Some people who claim to be “nutritionists” will go online and find a program that is maybe a couple of months, which obviously doesn’t compare to the 6+ years of college education and experience we have to have. The bottom line is anyone can call themselves a nutritionist, it’s not regulated but dietitians are. DRs often get lumped into being experts of everything Heath related but they rly have minimal nutrition education. That doesn’t mean they aren’t great at what they. for example, you wouldn’t ask an electrician to come fix a septic tank because they aren’t trained in that; it’s kinda the same thing here. If someone is pushing 1 specific diet I’d bet that person is NOT a dietitian. We are taught that no specific diet is fit for all. It’s all about what the person has going on health wise, what they enjoy, and what works best for their lifestyle.

From an evolutionary development standpoint, bone marrow and meat would have been very helpful for increasing our rate of evolutionary development of our minds because crops weren't a thing back then and so plants were exclusively wild ones which have just enough nutrients to convince an animal to eat them and spread their seeds, but at this point we have reliable crop yeilds and robust supply lines so meat's no longer necessary for us to maintain our mental capacity.

She seems very nice. I’ve had vegans say that I don’t truly love my dog if I eat meat. I respect the vegan lifestyle but not the people that imply that you’re evil if you eat animal products

You're not evil. This kind of language is counter productive. Eating and buying meat does however contribute to unnecessary suffering

Some are evil but most are hurt and frightened and brainwashed, and try to assert their false sense of superiority and that's why you/they consume animal products, and there's people that don't understand all over... and it's more than a lifestyle, when billions a year in every country suffer and die. You can love your dog just don't claim to own him/her, and be kind to all. There is no reason to consume animal products. Except maybe rarely due to a health issue not resolved otherwise. Because it's abuse, torture, agony, suffering, horrific slaughter all in front of their families and other loved ones, AS WELL AS the fact you're consuming cancer, faecal matter, covid and other diseases and pathogens, noxious drugs and chemicals, AND it's destruction of everyone and everything.

Great video, very informative. Would love to see a video on the health effects of smoked and cured meats. As much as I love smoked or cured anything, I've had to cut it down to once a week or less, because things like ham, smoked meats and sausages make my gout flare up something awful (the purines being the main issue). I've looked up lists for gout safe foods, and they're all over the place. Most recommend to completely avoid tomatoes, red meat and organ meat, and sugary drinks and food (beer as well unfortunately), but when it comes to veggies, there doesn't seem to be much consistency. Most I can gather is to avoid tomatoes, the rest of the sources seem to contradict each other.

Thank you for interviewing Dr. Belardo! I feel your past videos haven't always presented the full benefits of plant-based nutrition so I'm glad you had someone who could explain with evidence.

I always heard that generally speaking, it's less important what specific diet you subscribe to, and more about portion control.

I am of the opinion that no particular diet is good for anyone, just as "sitting correct" is not good for your body. A lot of variation with meat, fish, plants and even McDonald food is far more healthy for you, it strengthens your system and gives you what you need. Throughout time has experts found out that something were very bad for you, to later reverse that and tell you that you need it and to avoid it can harm you. To live healthy, forget all about diets and so on, just don't get fat and be active and be happy, then will you have a long life.

Thanks for the great advice. I would like to hear your thoughts on nutrition and poverty. When my kids were smaller, we had a monthly grocery budget of $250 for 3 of us. That's just not enough, even without focusing on healthy foods. A bag of 8 apples is $6, a watermelon is $10, and a lb of frozen fish is $12. Whereas, box of 48 granola bars is $9, a large bag of chips is $1, and a package of 12 beef/pork weiners is $3. Is it impossible to be healthy? I believe it is.

My husband had a heart attack (complete blockage, stint placed) January 3rd, 2020. He had just turned 42. He absolutely refuses to change ANYTHING about his diet, refuses to take his prescribed medications or exercise and will not quit smoking. He's a ticking time bomb and in complete denial. ⏰ 💣 It's one of the very few things we fight about. Any advise?
