In this video Doctor O'Donovan explains 16:8 intermittent fasting - a popular type of intermittent fasting that involves fasting for 16 hours and an 8 hour eating window. In this video he explains what 16:8 fasting is, what time windows you might want to choose for your fast, food groups to consider and benefits and drawbacks of intermittent fasting.
Intermittent fasting is when you alternate between periods of eating and fasting. This type of eating is often described as "patterns" or "cycles" of fasting.
Intermittent fasting isn't about starving yourself - it's about cutting way back on calories for short time periods. The belief is that your body becomes satisfied with smaller portions while also reducing cravings for unhealthy snack foods. That is, as long as you maintain a healthy diet while trying it all out.
In the video we cover:
00:00 - Introduction to 16:8 Intermittent Fasting
01:08 - Picking a time window for 16:8 fasting
02:42 - Some foods and drinks to consider during 16:8 fasting
04:07 - Potential benefits of 16:8 intermittent fasting
05:00 - Potential drawbacks of 16:8 intermittent fasting
06:14 - Top tips
Many diets focus on what to eat, but intermittent fasting is all about when you eat. With intermittent fasting, you only eat during a specific time. Research shows fasting for a certain number of hours each day or eating just one meal a couple days a week may have health benefits - for example for loosing weight and for better control of diabetes.

Today marks my 1-Year Anniversary of Intermittent Fasting 16:8 minimum (sometimes I do 18:6, or 20:4 at a push). 365 days uninterrupted as of today. I've lost 13 Stone / 76kg. Reversed Type-2 Diabetes. I have much more energy, and arguably the most important aspect: I have a much healthier relationship with food. I don't know the true ins-and-outs of the impact of InFast itself, but for me, it has been an exercise in self-control. That alone has been worth it, and I'm going to keep at it. I hope, if any of you are struggling and haven't tried intermittent fasting, that it can help you as well.

Hello! I'm curious as to how you experience the differences in fast level. I do 14:10 as a standard lifestyle and have for many years without knowing anything of this intermittent fasting and so I wonder how impactful it would be for me to swap it to 16:8. It seems I am pretty much on a healthy track as I'm on a good weight with a good energetic balance, still recently got into nutrition and I can't help but wonder abit and I kind of want to try.

@snowteamw123 Hi there! I'm afraid it's hard to describe, as I went from dire health circumstances and reckless eating habits straight into 16:8 Fasting. But I think it'd be worth trying to move to 16:8 for a month or two and see if you can feel a difference in yourself. No harm in trying! It's good to hear you're already in great health, though. Do what feels right 👍🏻 and I wish you all the best.

Good information. Note: You may start 12/12/, moving via 14/10 to 16/8. Keep carbs low. Get energy from good fat like avocado. Don’t overeat. Don’t plan cheat days as they will come anyway at work or at gatherings. You may not fall asleep easily initially. I have some almonds, a bit of banana. Helps. Drink a lot of water. Take magnesium. And, exercise. If beginner build up. Later try high intensity Intervall training HIIT. Short sessions do. Be patient, don’t listen to others, reduce eating out. Enjoy every progress re weight, bodylook, feeling balanced, knowing eating healthy is good for you, getting fitter, being more self-confident. Cheers.

I’m a true success story with intermittent fasting! With the help of proper exercise (cardiovascular and resistance training) I’ve achieved an 80lb weight loss! I found that intermittent fasting motivates me to fill my feeding window with healthy foods that are unprocessed and filled with nutrients to satisfy my cravings. I fall off the fasting train from time to time, especially when events like weddings, girls nights and brunches are thrown in the mix. I’m a huge advocate for this type of dieting and hope to promote it more during my personal training career. Thanks for sharing this video, it’s very educational and easy to follow!

I started intermittent fasting about two months ago. I started with 12:12, I basically didn’t eat at night after dinner. I’ve stretched it out to 14:10 or 16:8 because I’m not hungry in the mornings. I’ve also greatly improved my diet, I was terribly addicted to sugar and had a diet of mostly sugar and refined carbohydrates. Now I eat real, whole food ( fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds, meats ,seafoods and full fat dairy) and have lost body fat. This is a lifestyle I can live with.

I had a similar experience. Only I went 14:10 for about two years and kept experimenting with 16:8. Now I’m on a full 16:8 and I can feel a major difference. The hunger pangs in the morning are intermittent. Some days I’m ravenously hungry other days I don’t even notice. All I can tell people is the weight loss is noticeable but you will plateau unless you increase exercise and/or decrease caloric intake. But what fasting has done for me is I am off the Acid Reflux medication and I rarely take Antacids of any kind unless I cheat and eat sugary foods. The bloating and brain fog has severely reduced. I feel more energetic or another way to look at it I don’t tire as quickly. I breathe better at night and during exercise. I don’t sweat as much, and generally I feel better throughout the day. I have experimented with Paleo and Keto and Carnivore diets. I tend to find myself more on the Cheatovore side. It’s hard giving up food. Food is a pleasure like no other, but I can tell you that Carnivore and Keto and something in between is more doable than most people think. Just watch out for those cheat days because you may regret it more than you enjoy it.

@@unholynexus yes, I feel so much better also. I no longer use melatonin to sleep, I no longer have irregularly issues ( I have Parkinson’s, and it is common to have such issues). I have lost 15 pounds, and don’t want to lose any more. - I went from 115 to 100- I started all of this to try to quit my sugar addiction. The fasting and better eating habits keep my blood sugar stable so I don’t crave sugar as much. But I have to admit I do have desert on a special occasion.

@@livefreewithjp5251 I didn’t say it was 16 hours. There is no magic about 16 hours. It’s mostly clickbait. If you are finished eating by 6 p.m. and don’t eat breakfast until 8 a.m., that’s 14 hours. I've been on 16:8 a week now and it's made a big difference to my mental health. I stop eating around 6 pm (I'm a huge snacker in the evenings) It's really helped get me out of that night time snacking and tv. I will say that i had/still have strange symptoms which I think might be 'detox' from all the sugar and junk food. I do eat healthy most days, just like to snack on corn chips/chocolate etc. So far I'm very glad to be doing this - I can distract myself in the evenings by cleaning, making phone calls or whatever . I sleep well as I'm not starving going to bed and although I'm hungry in the morning, I can make it through on black coffee (I do add 1tsp of heavy cream as per Mindy Pelz advice if you need it). My blood sugar is more steady. Thanks for posting the video. Best of luck to anyone else who tries it🙂

The 16:8 diet where all food is eaten in an eight-hour window - _ has gained popularity after stars - including Jennifer Aniston and Jennifer Lopez used it.. _ Previous studies suggested it can improve blood pressure, blood - glucose and cholesterol levels. . But the first look at long-term effects found the 16:8 was associated with a 91% higher chance of dying from cardiovascular disease than those who ate across 12 or 16 hours.. Shanghai-based Dr Victor Wenze Zhong, who led the . analysis of 20,000 US adults, said those with existing heart conditions should take note. He adding: “Our findings encourage a more personalised approach to diet.” Dr Zhong also said it did not mean fasting kills and more work was needed".

I stumbled onto this type of fasting by chance. After foot surgery I was combined to bed and my wheelchair so I was fasting for 14/16 hours a day. My weight has fallen from 190, to 185 which I consider real progress.

Now I am having trouble sleeping, lot of hunger especially after 1000 pm and interrupting my sleep, also going to the bathroom at least 4 times between 1000pm to 0600 am. I just want to sleep and function better

I've lost 17 pounds in 30 days on the 8pm-noon fast schedule. Biggest tip I can give... Drink a big glass of water 30 minutes before and another small glass right before or while you eat your first meal of the day. And make it a game of how many calories you can avoid. Love this diet because it starts and ends everyday by strengthening your will power "muscles" which makes it easier to push through making healthy food choices when you do eat. I focus on other things besides food and enjoy eating when I do eat. When I'm done losing my 40 lbs I'll keep doing I. F. And just add a small shot of omega3 oil or a protein shake as my final ritual before fasting each night. More calories for my meals and just looking to stay net neutral week over week. Good luck everyone!

Hi Doctor, recently I was having GERD and I was doing research on GERD I felt like I couldn’t swallow and even a sip of water would bloat me up so I looked into how to reverse it and intermittent fasting came up so I looked it up on you tube. I was swollen my legs looked like an elephants and this had been going on for a longtime but after watching your video I said let me try this even after one day I could feel the difference so I’m on day 5 now and I’m now 263 lbs from 280 and basically I just eat normal I just cut out most of the sugar I drink one cup of coffee a day and I do use my creamer but no sugar. I have GOLO pills that I take 30 minutes before eating and that helps me not to over eat I got a burrito bowl and only ate a quarter of it where’s I used to eat the whole thing. My sugars are normal now I wake up and my sugars are under 120 where they were 150 and up I needed insulin now I just talk the long acting at night. I have an appointment with my primary care physician on Aug 1 and we’re going to talk about this but I’m still going to keep doing this I’m 52 years old and want to live to see my grandkids grow. This is something I’m determined to do for the rest of my life. Why not?

I've beep practicing 16:8 and sometimes 18:6 or 20:4 and must say that whatever you choose is fine as long as you can stick to it. I usually do a 16:8 and ad a 24:0 once a week. During the eating window I still count calories (fasting is useless if you eat 5 cheeseburgers with fries and fizzy drinks) but I'd have two "normal" meals and if I want to eat something sweet such as ice cream I have it just after lunch or dinner so my bloodsugar won't spike too often. At the beginning I used to feel hungry and then I'd just wait and understand that the hunger goes away after some time. We really don't need to eat as much and as often as we might think.

Started doing an 18-6 fast after wanting to give up sugar as I'm someone who doesn't eat breakfast and snacks later at night so all I really had to do was stop snacking and I would be on an 18-6 fast. I would normally eat lunch just after 12:00 and dinner at 17:00/18:00 so it fell into place. Only been 8 days but I feel so much better as not snacking means I still need some intake so i just drink water and I'm probably drinking just under double the water I was before.
