There is a common belief that the primary tenant in medicine is for doctors to "First do no harm" but is this really true. Do doctors even take such an oath? What is the Hippocratic Oath Anyway?
In this video Dr. Hilsden discusses the idea of the Hippocratic Oath where it came from, and do doctors actually take the oath today.

The Original Oath:
“I swear by Apollo the physician, and Aesculapius the surgeon, likewise Hygeia and Panacea, and call all the gods and goddesses to witness, that I will observe and keep this underwritten oath, to the utmost of my power and judgment.
I will reverence my master who taught me the art. Equally with my parents, will I allow him things necessary for his support, and will consider his sons as brothers. I will teach them my art without reward or agreement; and I will impart all my acquirement, instructions, and whatever I know, to my master’s children, as to my own; and likewise to all my pupils, who shall bind and tie themselves by a professional oath, but to none else.
With regard to healing the sick, I will devise and order for them the best diet, according to my judgment and means; and I will take care that they suffer no hurt or damage.
Nor shall any man’s entreaty prevail upon me to administer poison to anyone; neither will I counsel any man to do so. Moreover, I will give no sort of medicine to any pregnant woman, with a view to destroy the child.
Further, I will comport myself and use my knowledge in a godly manner.
I will not cut for the stone, but will commit that affair entirely to the surgeons.
Whatsoever house I may enter, my visit shall be for the convenience and advantage of the patient; and I will willingly refrain from doing any injury or wrong from falsehood, and (in an especial manner) from acts of an amorous nature, whatever may be the rank of those who it may be my duty to cure, whether mistress or servant, bond or free.
Whatever, in the course of my practice, I may see or hear (even when not invited), whatever I may happen to obtain knowledge of, if it be not proper to repeat it, I will keep sacred and secret within my own breast.
If I faithfully observe this oath, may I thrive and prosper in my fortune and profession, and live in the estimation of posterity; or on breach thereof, may the reverse be my fate!”

@@RichHilsden After hearing these exact words of "do no harm" over and over and over again from nearly every type of specialist doctor available in the world for innumerable different health conditions, It becomes blatantly clear to me over time , and a 2min google search will show you that millions of other patients have experienced the same exact situation too i s the.............. " Do no harm principle" is honestly rarely used today by doctors, to eliminate or minimize both the mental and physical harm a medication, treatment, or surgery can have to a patient. Doctors globally have ABUSED the practice/principle of "Do not Harm" to suit their own needs,. I've even had several doctors finally admit after a serious back-and-forth conversation pressing the point of "why" The truth is the phrase is generally used by doctors in conversation to "avoid liability" if something goes wrong. To safeguard their own medical license in spite if the treatment may help the patient dramatically, they want a carefree, responsibility-free, medical practice. it is said as "an excuse" to take away the responsibility of the doctor to help a patient with treatment, they pretend their hands are tied and the choice to help you "is not within their means", and the governing body of doctors won't allow them etc.. then they proceed to give you a million referrals to see "other" specialist doctors "even within their own field" to pass on the burden of responsibility and ditch the patient. Even though it is fully within their power and ability to prescribe a certain medication or offer a certain treatment or surgery. They just intentionally chose not to. and literally, forget about these doctors ever writing you a off-label medications either. Doctors today just do not give a damn about people whenever a difficult medical problem walks into their office. And by an extremely large percentage of doctors in all fields doing this disgusting behavior cause millions of people extreme amounts of pain and suffering, a ton of money they never needed to spend, and years upon years of time lost finding a "good" doctor that cares

@@mp-uy9sv well, I definitely disagree with this. Sometimes we simply cannot help. I certainly don’t have the skills to help in all situations. Doctors are not perfect, but the majority of us genuinely care. Being a doctor is a very dark world indeed if your primary motivation is anything other than caring for patients. I genuinely believe it’s the most difficult job in the world. Thank you for watching my video and for your thoughtful comment

@@RichHilsden Thanks for the video. To elaborate, I understand why there is a need for it when it comes to alleviating any bad medical conditions. But I don’t get it when there is an abuse of it at the cost of one’s health.

If an oath gets updated instead of staying as the original when first said or written in my opinion makes it is not an oath at that point. And I say that for all oaths. It's better to drop an oath and come up with one that has more meaning.

Totally agree. What's interesting is that there isn't really a single "physician's oath". Because there is no universal oath, the words we say in medical school are really just a symbolic experience for the individual doctor. There are many symbolic experiences in the practice of medicine so its not good or bad, but probably a lot less significant than people think.

I thought this was going to be a rabid anti-abortion video by a doctor. Thank you for not being that. I’m an RN in Texas. I don’t work with clients who can even become pregnant, and yet I had a contract I was expected to sign that forbid me from “accepting tax money” from abortion providers. I don’t even know what that means, exactly, haven’t had to sign it yet, but not sure if that language will be kept in the contract in the future. It’s scary here in Texas, sometimes. I was born & raised here, my family & loved ones are here. For the first time in my life I’m considering moving.
