Talladega was a prime testing facility because it was the fastest circle track on the planet, and Chrysler was there to set a record. The day was overcast and cool as NASCAR legend Buddy Baker shifted into gear and pulled onto the track. It didn’t take long for the driver to smash the 200 mph record. What was this top secret car that Chrysler hired NASCAR royalty to test? How did they shatter open-wheel Indy Car records with a lowly stock car? How did this weird, but effective, race car win back Richard “The King” Petty after he ditched Chrysler for Ford? Today on Past Gas, we dig into the incredible tale of the Dodge Charger Daytona.

Okay, I'm an old guy. I was already a kid who already loved mopars when the Daytona came out in 1969. I thought that the Daytona and later the Superbird were waaaaaayy cool. I was a huge Richard Petty fan as well as a fan of any of the Chrysler Hemi drivers in NASCAR. But here is an FYI- The Dodge record against the Fords on the big Superspeedways was dismal in 1969 and 1970 during the wing car era. This was also the "Factory Car" era of NASCAR, versus the Independant teams. If not for the Petty team cars of Petty and Pete Hamilton (Pete only ran the big races in 1970 in the Petty #40 Superbird), Ford would have dominated Chrysler badly. There were several factors in this. The Daytona didn't arrive until late 1969 in the Driver Strike 2nd Talledega race late in the season, and the Superbird did not come until 1970. Ford had the Torino Talledega and Mercury Cyclone Spoiler 2 for almost all of 1969 and 1970 seasons. In 1969 and 1970, Ford had some of the better teams- The Wood Brothers, Junior Johnson, Holman Moody, Banjo Mathews and Petty in 1969. Ford spent a LOT more money than Chrysler did. Example- Ford came out with a "new" engine- the Boss 429 Semi-Hemi to beat the Chrysler Hemi. And it was a bit faster. Dodge had blown engines, wrecks and other bad luck. In 1970 Dodge driver Bobby Isaac won the points championship due to several factors. The Wood Brothers did not run a full schedule. Petty had a bad Darlington wreck and was out for a while. Isaac ran and won many of the short track races in a regular Charger and there were a LOT of short track races. Not every team ran all of the races and skipped the lower paying short tracks. The Aerodynamic cars were only used on the bigger tracks where their features made a difference. Another interesting Daytona story- Dick Brooks running the only Wing car in the 1971 Daytona 500 with a NASCAR mandated 305 cubic inch "Trans Am" engine, NASCAR made the 305 rule to discourage, not outlaw the Aerodynamic cars of BOTH companies. I am a long time Mopar fan and while I was excited for the wings, I have to agree they did not dominate on the superspeedways. I think it's fair to say they did narrow the gap in Fords dominance. In 1970 the wings had some successes compared to the previous year with the Charger 500.

Ok, stupid mistake on my part! The 1969 debut of the Dodge Charger Daytona at Talledega was the very first race ever run at Talledega. During this time many of the big and many of the smaller NASCAR tracks had 2 races every year. An early race and another one later in the year. In following years, the date of the inaugural Talledega race would be the time period of it's second race of the season. Most of the drivers boycotted this first Talledega race due to the track surface coming apart at the near 200 mph speeds attained during practice. And NASCAR founder and owner of both Daytona and Talledega tracks Bill France insisted that the race go on. The Factory #99 Dow Chemicals Daytona was left at the track after it's driver, Charlie Glotzback had left. Somewhat unknown driver Richard Brickhouse drove the car in a race that had a lower division fill in the field to make a {poor} race of it. So the Daytona won in it's first race ever under questionable circumstances. Brickhouse never had any other success in NASCAR's big leagues. Bret K.

Hey guys, love the show. I remember as a kid cutting the wing and nose off my AFX slot car like the other kids did because we did not know what a Dodge Daytona or Super Bird was. What if another manufacturer, even lower down the food chain than Chrysler, did something similar for the Trans Am series? Instead of homologation, they simply changed the style of their model to incorporate the aero needed to make it a better race car. And maybe by this time Ford and GM had learned their lesson and simply backed out of the series so as to save face. Isn’t that what a 71-74 AMC Javelin is?

Uh James that FIN under the front bumper is called a chin spoiler. Did you know the wing was strong enough to sit on? It was made from aircraft aluminum & was anchor bolted via a bracket in the trunk area. My dad was in USAC stock car racing when I was a kid in the 60s. I was 9 when the Daytona charger debuted & 10 when the superbird came out. They took 503 chargers sent them to creative industries to have the work done the nose & wing & rear glass were done there the bird's front fenders were 70 dodge coronet fenders & the rear window was concave and the welding was so bad that if you notice ALL superbirds have vinyl tops to hide the sloppy work. Fact.

I Drove A Dodge Charger Daytona, But NASCAR Banned It, Funny Moments!
@evanst.martin9332
@evanst.martin9332 5 ай бұрын
The Daytona wasn't banned. For 1971 Nascar changed engine rules pertaining to the Daytona and Superbird, but also all other Aero cars. That included the Charger 500, Ford Talladega and Mercury Spoiler II. All of those cars were limited to a 305 cu.in. engines. Only car owner Mario Rossi elected to enter a Daytona with Dick Brooks at the wheel. It would be fair to say the Aero cars were castrated, but not banned!
