Those newer ones with the pentastar are honestly hit and miss. I know so many cabbies that run them to 3 and 400k miles on the factory engine and transmission, but they do change the fluids very regularly around here. Mind you they put this kinda mileage on in just a few years and they only shut them off when they are getting gas.

Hey Scotty, my family is growing and I want to purchase a used 2018 or 2019 Honda Odyssey minivan. I know you would chose the Toyota Sienna over the Odyssey but I like the Honda more. My question is, what trim would you choose between the EX-L, Touring or Elite? I have only consider those three trims because I really want the leather seats but I’m also worried about the 10-speed transmissions that the Touring and Elite have, and they also include the annoying start-stop feature that I don’t like. My biggest concerns are regarding the transmission: should I chose the EX-L with the 9-speed or is it OK if I get a good deal to pick the Touring or Elite with the 10-speed and start-stop feature?

I was thinking about buying a 1991 Does Ranger with 52k miles. They are asking 5. The inside is clean. They say the 5 speed transmission is new, new clutch, new breaks, new drive train, new battery, new solenoid, new tires and new dashboard covers. Comes with toolbox. What's the max you'd pay for it?

Needs new struts, but aside from that, everything works, AC front and rear, entertainment system for rear passengers, etc. It's very dependable. @@thenman23 superior to what? Toyota is doing everything like the other companies now. My 17 Challenger is holding up better than my wife's 17 RAV4 by every account. RAV4 Issues: lane departure system goes off while sitting still but not when moving and angling toward another lane. The cluster says to watch for icy roads no matter what the temperature. The doors don't have enough ballast to be closed without pushing all the way shut. It doesn't want to use 3rd gear. It doesn't want to shift into 6th gear. A window guide on the rear right door won't stay outside when rolling up the window without manually forcing it. Problems with the Challenger: I left the car in the run position twice and killed the battery ×2. The radio black screened ×2 (fixed by making a call via Bluetooth) after recharging the battery. The ZAutomotive Tazer (not a factory part but being 100% honest) has given an issue when updating. The 245/45/R20s got switched to 275/40/R20s. Yeah Toyota is far superior, by standards of how much can we make servicing this vehicle. If you're not the consumer. I have neighbors on both sides of me with Hondas. Two are owned, Odysseys, and the Accords are leased. If a customer doesn't trust a brand enough to buy one sedan, why lease 2? I'll say I did try to purchase a 86 or 87 Accord 2dr hatchback w/5 spd. I knew the owner before he passed and the care he gave to that car. I didn't want someone to just treat it like a regular newer car.

Hey Scotty, I have enjoyed your videos for a long time. And taken everything you said with a grain of salt. It has been enjoyable until now. I watched your comments about how bad Saturn's have been. And I don't know why you feel that way. I have had a lot of cars and trucks in my 73 years on the earth. The honest best vehicles I have owned have been two Neons, a 2003 and a 2005. Both cars were honestly as reliable as a stone. The 03 I had purchased new was without fault until my sons girlfriend took it out and rolled it five times. It was flawless And it was strong enough so she didn't even get hurt. The 05 was as perfect as a car can get. I had it for eleven years without a single problem. Then it was totaled in an accident. Meanwhile I had purchased a 2009 Saturn Vue XR V6. It now has 117000 miles on it and the only thing I had to do was tires brakes and an in cabin air filter. The car was in all honesty, another flawless car. And here in southeast Michigan, I honestly see everytime we take a ride somewhere, at least 4 or 5 other Saturn's. Every one in perfect condition and apparently running just fine. All I can say is I am 73 yrs old and have had some pretty lousy cars in the past. Some from Chrysler and some from Ford and some from GM. I don't think I can believe you any longer. I see you have given up on American cars and trucks. And thats to bad. I also had a 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 4x4. And till this day my grandson is still driving it. It has not been flawless, on account of the rust. But it is still going very strong. Engine and trans and whole drive train are rock solid. This is just my personal opinion, and my observation. I truly love my Saturn, and as great as it is running, I might never have to buy another vehicle. Ever. Charles Domansku

Well said, Charles. I enjoy Scotty's videos when he's demonstrating how to repair something but as for his personal opinions on vehicles, I take it with a grain of salt. He's obviously biased towards Toyota and that's OK. I agree that they're well made cars, but every vehicle out there has horror stories about ownership, including Toyota. So i'll continue to enjoy his videos and just ignore his personal biases. If you maintain your vehicle and don't beat the piss out of it, you can get just about any car to last.

My brother in law gave me his old 220,000 mile 1998 Dodge Caravan with the 3.3 engine. He really takes care of his stuff so the van presents like a 2 year old car. I replaced the brakes, tires, struts and shocks and the car drives great. It now has 300,000 miles, and I've gone from a dodge hater to a dodge lover, at least in this car. So what gives? Did dodge make them better in 1998, or are we just lucky. I've was a car mechanic in the 70's, and spcialized in auto-electrics. I had my ASME general mechanic rating, so I did expect this car to be a typical Dodge junkwagon. I had a thing going in the 70's where I had the tools and knowledge to repair the Chrysler 300s from the early 50s. I even worked on their early front disk brakes that looked like a torque converter bolted to the axle. Anyway, what gives with our car lasting so long?

Love the snorting sound the 604 4-speed trans makes when it downshifts. I liked the turbo manual Dodge and Plymouth short wheelbase minivans. You couldn’t help but smile when you drove them. Can’t believe you did a Chrysler minivan video without mentioning interior rattles and squeaks.

Scotty, you nailed it! From the firewall back, these were great vans. But the electronics controlling the engine and transmission were very expensive crap and the transmission wasn't so great either. I had a 2010 model that rode and handled pretty good for a minivan. All the bells and whistles worked perfectly while we had it, and there was enough room that a family of four could live in it comfortably. But we had to replace the engine computer twice after the engine would just shut down while driving down the road! After the second one, I traded it off.

As usual most of those commenting have never owned a Chrysler product and just believe the crap they hear or read on the internet. The trans issues were mostly late 80s and 90s Caravans. I have personally driven one well over 150k with no issues and know of many that have gone at least that far with no issues. Many fleet vehicles were Dodge Caravans that had very few issues. Every company has had issues from time to time even the almighty Toyota.

@@leadnsteel1428, I never got to see how the diesels held up, I only moved the diesels when they were Brand New. I hauled many of the gassers from the rental car companies when they were done renting them out. They went to the auction and there they were sold to the dealers, who then sold them as used cars. People tend to use them pretty hard as rentals, that is why they USUALLY stay in a rental fleet for 6 months and around 16 thousand miles.

I’ll tell my brother in law about the Toyota quality, he blew an engine on his 4Runner with 85,000 miles. I had two Plymouth Voyagers (‘93 and ‘97) and a ‘02 Grand Caravan, had no issues. As for the 3 owner Honda CRV, watch out for the 1.5 liter engine, Honda had problems with fuel getting into the crankcase. You had to constantly check your dipstick because the oil level would increase between oil changes.

My fiancee and I sold our '97 t&c (3.8l v6, 4-speed auto) with 216k miles, still runs great! I'll be fair to say that it does have some minor electrical issues (door locks and radio speakers), but its mechanically solid. I do think its dumb that they're newer models dont have a transmission dipstick, but they're not the only manufacturer making the vehicles less owner friendly. Honestly, hp numbers aren't nearly as important as torque numbers. The '97 only had 160 hp, but a healthy 240 ft.-lbs. of torque (at low rpm), more than enough to break the tires loose on 2 tons of fun. :)

In the past I have had 2 Dodge Caravans (1994 / 1998 ) and 1 Chrysler Town and Country ( 2003) , none of these 3 Vans gave me any serious issues like transmission or engine failures, all 3 drove way over 200K miles and the 1994 with a 3.3 V6 engine reached 345000 miles when finally died. I have no complaints whatsoever about the Dodge / Chrysler vans. In 2005 I bought a brand new 2005 Dodge Durango Limited with a 5.7 liter HEMI V8, I still have the vehicle and its now clocking 225000 miles, no smoke, no leaks and plenty of V8 torque and power.
